Why is this Forum so SLOW

As a 'newbie' I thought I'd just say that the problem I had a few hours ago has been resolved thnx to the help of members here in the Forum. I just want to say  BIG THNX to all who helped me from going 'nuts' LOL. Have a great evening & I'll B back often. Great job folks...thnx!!

Hi all,

the above mentioned server www.alwil.com is not ours (it belongs to the company ALWIL Trade which is our main distributor in Czech Republic). Our main domain is www.avast.com  .

Our network of servers is based mostly in Texas, USA and is hosted by several providers. Currently we have 14 servers (you can check the list in the file servers.def in avast4\setup directory) which all serve for the web content, downloads and iAVS updates. One of them hosts also this forum (forum.avast.com). Our webs have about 70 000 unique visitors and 300 000 pageviews per day right now.

I personally do not have any problems with the forum speed (neither from work nor from home). The only slowdown can occur just in the moment when the new iAVS update is released (and during following four hours) - because the servers are under quite heavy load then  , but even in this moment I never receive a timeout??

I must say I do notice the problems (from work), for about 2 days.
It works nice and fast for a minute or two, and then gets slow for another while...

Yes Igor is right. I've noticed this few times before, but it was temporary and after few hours everything went back to normal. Last few days, actually, whole week, nothing is going back to normal. It's really annoying when you click on some thread and you have to wait like 1-3 minutes for a page to open... don't even wanna mention what's happening when you are trying to search for some post, or maybe reply to someone's thread...

I pinged forum.avast.com and I received an average result of 75ms [not too bad]. Since my server theory was proven wrong, I have come to believe that we have a gremlin.

Your right, at this moment it's an average of 41ms. But that's not the usual response time we've been experiencing. Maybe something was found. Time and continued use of the forum will tell.

Ontopic: I did some mumbo jumbo and sacrificed one black hen. That's about everything I can do right now about that  

There were no changes to the server, to the forum or to the database. The server just sits there and does (almost) nothing. I turned on the message on the page footer saying 'Page created in 0.073 seconds.' or so. If you think it's still slow, watch that line for some unusual numbers.

Picture is showing one of the fastest times I have seen in the last week

I estimate that it takes 27 seconds (on average) to load a page.

The week before this one is was only slightly faster.

I'm wondering if someone (accidently) reduced the amount of threads to the MySql database and what it shows in MySQLadmin under slow queries.....

And this is mine, and it used to be unbelievable fast before... so something is changed and that's for sure. Problems on the server ? You know, sometimes it's very good idea to reset the server from time to time...

The problem with it being this slow as I've stated before, It gets to be a real burden to try to answer all the questions asked by users. It's also a total waist of time to sit and wait for 30sec. or more between each post. Time is a valuable commodity and the older you get, the more precious it becomes. I pay for high speed cable access but right now, I might as well be using dial-up. Sorry but it gets frustrating. :'( :'(
