Iminent toolbar virus
« on: April 04, 2012, 08:49:36 AM »
Today I downloaded the latest version of the SUPER C video converter, a program I've used a lot over the years. Today, however, it sort of let me down when the installer turned out to be carrying a virus.

As soon as I opened the installer, several malware apps were installed onto my computer. The one I remember best is Iminent toolbar, which instantly added itself to Internet Explorer and left files everywhere. There were also one or two others; I don't remember the exact names of them but one of them installed itself in a folder in Program Files(x86) called INTERNET in all caps.

This was all without me even clicking anything. The SUPER installer was still on the "click next to start" or whatever the "home" screen for an installer is. The close buttons were grayed out so I killed it with task manager, unplugged my internet, and started cleaning up.

When I tried running a full system scan, each filename was preceded by something like svc// - I assume this was something that had injected itself into the scanner and was intercepting all of the file scan attempts. I had to manually delete all of the files created by Iminent and the other malware, which I mostly accomplished by searching for files modified in the last day and sorting by time.

I think I got rid of everything and Avast is no longer displaying the junk in front of file names when searching, but I'm pretty disappointed it just completely let this go. I don't know if this is the right place to report a missed detection - honestly I haven't been getting nearly enough sleep and I'm exhausted - but I figured reporting it here can't hurt.

i suggest you run a quick scan with Malwarebytes and post the log here....if you already have it, remember to update before scan

you may also attach a OTL log here, then one of the removal specialist will check if you got it all out....
OBS: it may be some waiting time before one arrive   ;)

MBAM found one registry entry which it removed successfully.

I'm way too backlogged with homework to due the OTL right now but maybe in a few days.

Ok...Not a problem.  Take care of your homework and just post when you return.  Send me a PM as well in case I overlook it.  :)
