Shouldn't Microsoft update IE automatically?

Is it wiser to stick a bit longer with IE 7 or should we switch to IE8?

Make a full backup of your computer before that. It worked for me on Vista but fail miserably on one of my XP computers...

I think that IE8 has to be installed manually just like IE7 had to be installed if you were running IE6.

A full backup is a good idea but I was lucky as both of my XP systems updated OK but I reviewed problem reports about updating to IE8 before I attempted it and found that IE-SPYAD and SpywareBlaster's protection had to be removed plus Spybot S&D's Immunize had to be undone and on the XP Pro system I had to disable Avira AntiVir's protection.

The XP Pro system took the longest as Avira AntiVir had an update to V9 at the same time which lead to a bit of confusion.
