It's for updates to all MS products. Before you had to search for OS and Office products separately; now the updates page cehecks for both at the same time.

If you visit the link:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx

with IE, you will need to accept a couple of ActiveX installations to update update.

If you visit with Firefox, you won't see anything, of course.

Funny how MS Antispyware asks for permission to install the latest Microsoft/Windows update.  ;D Surely MS could update their antispyware to allow this automatically.  ::)

Better not because malware could detect the same mechanism and use it (like Microsoft) to infect the system...

Critical Java Updates:

http://news.com.com/Java+flaws+open+door+to+hackers/2100-1002_3-5746913.html?tag=cd.top

http://secunia.com/advisories/15671/

http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-101749-1

These critical updates seem to have already been issued, but were previously described as minor bug updates. This week they are being described as critical security updates.

Anybody who can work out what's going on here gets a prize! ??? ??? >:( :P ;)

Basically, if you got the latest Java update a few weeks ago you are safe. If you missed that update, be aware that it was a critical security update and not just a few minor bug fixes as previously described on the Java site.

Download the latest version here:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

To check which version you have:

Start>Run>Cmd>java -fullversion

Latest version is 1.5.0_03

Thanks for the link, Frank.  :)  Up to this point, Sun's "main" download page has insisted on feeding me Update 2 even though I'd previously uninstalled that to be sure.

And I learned something new this time around -- tried the Offline installer for a change, and that's much faster than the "normal" (online) one.  Still runs something like 120 megs installed, but that offline-installer exe must be compressed at something like 10 to 1 -- definitely a blessing for us dialup users.

Hi Spyros.

Has anybody in this forum thread referred to this link: http://dozleng.com/updates/index.php?act=calendar There you can register and you will get all the update alerts for security programs you want.
If it was not mentioned before it is handy to bookmark here.

Have a nice day,
