Well what's up with that?  When I try to use the Java update function it also tells me 1.5.0.6 is the most current. I guess I'll download it, but its strange ...

That's because you need to get the update from the following link:

Thanks... uninstall the 6, downloaded and installed the 7... seems to be working...
Anyway, I expect the auto-update feature works  :P :'(

I've decided to wait a day or two on this update.  In the mean time I've set 6 to check for updates daily and have e-mailed Java Support asking about 7.  I'll post again if/when I get either a response or an automatic update.

In regard to Java, I got this non-response to my email

"Thank you very much for your interest in Java(TM) technology. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Probably there could be a network connectivity issue at your/ISP end, which prevents the complete download. At the same time sometimes due to high JRE downloads, we face some network congestion issues. We are aware of this problem and our network administrators are actively working towards a solution. We apologize again for any inconvenience this may have caused you. "

followed by some links to firewall settings, ordering Java on CD, etc.

Edit:  Ok - starting to see more references to Java 1.5.0.7 on google, including these release notes

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/ReleaseNotes.html

Pardon my paranoia.  It just seemed odd to me that filehippo would have the update before the Java homepage.
