Deep troubles installing in XP SP3... Boot time increased from 15 seconds to 2 minutes, IE 8 is crashing...
Uninstall IE8, no good, IE7 crashes, memory could not be read.
Trying to install IE7 over the IE7 installation, no good.
Restoring system... no good...
Seems that IE8 messed something that I can't restore in a XP computer...
Just take care.

I don't have a problem on my XP Pro system nor my old XP Home system that I am trying to sell and I make sure that it is working correctly as I would not want to make someone angry at me when I do sell it.

About IE8: overinstalling Windows XP trying to correct the problem... let's see.

I never was one for rushing into things, I tend to wait after the release dates and see what problems are experienced as it hits the may different permutations on systems.

So slow in not jumping I'm still waiting for the kinks to be ironed out in IE7 and along comes IE8 so I will have to wait and see again

That has always been my concern because IE is integrated into the OS and much different that a simple browser update. So as Tech has found any issues could mess with the OS.

Personally I would have done an image back-up before installing IE8 so if I experienced any problems, then I would just restore that back-up image.

Disable automatic Windows Updates as it will be released in next weeks as a "critical" update as far I could read in Internet.

I don't need to as my settings are to notify but not download or install. So I shall give it the wide berth I gave IE7 (which was also considered a critical update).

As and when I do get round to it, it will be a manual download of the update and it will be installed off-line after having done a drive image back-up.

No way on dial-up I would go through the hassle you have, because an over-install just doesn't mean you need to get IE7 (which I still haven't got round too), but you have to get all the security updates also as some updated system files will have reverted the the over-installed versions.
