For the security alert place a tick in do not show this again.  It is just IE saying that you are using a secure connection, sometimes a tedious and very pointless warning

Now you have SP3 could you run an OTL quick scan (selecting all users) and I will look at the services and startups, then we will give the computer a little TLC  ;D

OK could you go Start > Run
Type in MSCONFIG

Locate the startup tab and remove the tick from the following

XGIWatchDog
S3Trayp
VTTimer
RegServer
ArcSoft Connection Service

Then reboot, if the results are promising we will remove them properly

Once done we will remove the mega temp files that you now have and then defrag the drive

Ok essexboy, just double-checking before proceeding - these are processes ticked on startup tab:
regserve (is this the RegServer you wanted?)
XWatDog (is this the XGIWatchDog you wanted?)
VTTimer
S3trayp
RTHDCPL
jusched
avastUI
ACDaemon
ctfmon

There is no 'ArcSoft Connection Service' anywhere on tab - other items on tab but unticked are;
Monitor
NeroCheck
NeroFilterCheck
SkyTel (is this why you asked about watching TV?  From memory this was installed to listen to a specific Caribbean radio stations but no longer needed).

Hi, quick look around seems ok.  Opening email seemed quicker as did website.

Had this attached pop-up appear after reboot.  I've read it & re-read it & still don't understand - it's still sitting on desktop awaiting action.

That is just informing you that you have used MSconfig place a tick in the don't show again box

Now for a bit of clearing out, once this is done you will need a defragment, do you have one ?

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    Quote
    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
     [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
Remove ComboFix
  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    then click OK

  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled
Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
