when icon is picked for scan  monitor shuts down (not computer) then back on task, bar icons are green and blurry, scan works fine,  then monitor goes black then back on and every things back to normal. just reformated and downloaded avast, have used avast for over a year with no problem and no virus!  Have reinstalled twice ,same result

Do you mean the monitor turns into black and does not return to normal or, on contrary, some shadows and dark parts appear?

Can you run task monitor (ctrl+alt+del) and then see if ashserv.exe is taking all CPU resources?

Which are your scanning options? Archive files...
Operational System? Firewall? Other antivirus program installed?

as soon as i pick desktop icon screen screen shuts off (black, screen power light dims) then comes back on within 3 to 4 seconds with green task bar colors instead of blue. xp with sp2 firewall, as soon as i cancel after scan same thing happens and screen goes back to normal

I'll ask Eddy help here... It's our hardware guru  8)
Anyway, are your video/monitor drivers updated?

I might be wrong, but it sounds to me like a "wind-up" from the "Blues Brothers" movie

What do you mean?
For the non-English spokers some short phrases are not easy to understand... what is 'wind-up'?  ::)

Now I am lost...

What display settings under avast! properties are you talking about ? There are no display settings under any section of avast! settings. You mean display properties under Windows display settings ? Or... am I missing something in here ???
