RPC error is generally related to other antivirus present or, at least, firewall blocking. Do you use a firewall? Which one?

Anyway, RPC error is most likely correct by this procedure:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the pop up window (Repair).

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?

I'm having a similar problem.  I tried using the advice to correct the RPC error with a repair.  It seems to have been unsuccessful.

I have the following "anti-spyware" programs:
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Spybot ... two separate versions
spyware blaster v3.4
PC doctor for windows

Think i can get rid of these w/o too much of an issue?

(also, this is my g/f's computer which was store bought so who knows what kind of junk they put on here)

Thanks,
KT

Isn't there another antivirus installed in this computer? McAfee, Norton?

no.  The Norton anti-virus had been installed but since she graduated 5+ years ago it no longer worked properly so I installed Avast.  Norton no longer appears on the installed program list in Control Panel.  Who knows if all the registry components are gone too.  =/

So, you tried to start the "avast! antivirus" service from Control Panel -> Services?
And it didn't work? Did you get any error messages?

BTW are you using the new v4.8 or the previous 4.7?

Thanks
Vlk

1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Boot.
3) Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.
