Can setup.log be safely deleted?
« on: April 18, 2012, 04:02:18 PM »
Can the AVAST "Setup.log" located in C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\Setup be safely deleted? All it appears to be doing is recording the daily DAT installation. It was started on 10 March this year and to date has grown to 2.9MB

If it can be deleted, what is the correct procedure to do that since I get an "Access Denied" error when I attempt to delete part of the contents - I was trying to reduce the size of the file by deleting data recorded prior to today - or by attempting to delete the log file itself.

The avast self-defence module (avastUI, Settings, Troubleshooting) is what is blocking its removal. But it will also be a file in use as that is where lots of information on updates, etc. is stored and can be a valuable debug tool. I don't know why yours is large, mine was created in February and is only 410KB.

That said, if you are worried about the 2.9MB of hard disk space taken then you really are in trouble.

So I don't know why you would want to mess with it ?

If deleted it will be recreated.

Can it be safely deleted? Yes, it won't hurt anything and it'll recreate itself at next restart. As far as why you're getting "access denied" I'm not sure. I can delete it directly from the Log folder with  Avast running and the self-defense module on (Vista).

It would get recreated on the next update check as that is where the data/info on the update is stored. So when it is needed it will be created, you don't have to reboot.
