Hi lets have a shufti

 Download OTL  to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
consrv.dll
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
/md5stop
C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\U\*.* /s
%Temp%\smtmp\1\*.*
%Temp%\smtmp\2\*.*
%Temp%\smtmp\3\*.*
%Temp%\smtmp\4\*.*
>C:\commands.txt echo list vol /raw /hide /c
/wait
>C:\DiskReport.txt diskpart /s C:\commands.txt /raw /hide /c
/wait
type c:\diskreport.txt /c
/wait
erase c:\commands.txt /hide /c
/wait
erase c:\diskreport.txt /hide /c
CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Post both logs
THEN

Download aswMBR.exe ( 1.8mb ) to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it  Click the "Scan" button to start scan

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

You have run Combofix at some stage and the AV is alerting on a service that failed to complete the cleaning

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or better installed please disable it for the duration of this run
To disable MBAM
Open the scanner and select the protection tab
Remove the tick from "Start with Windows"
Reboot and then run OTL

Run OTL

How is the computer behaving now ?  I see that you have both CA and Avast.  I would recommend uninstalling one of them

Thus far I haven't seen any problems other than the Windows Installer popping up during the start up process.  I've also noticed that I'm not able to go into Stand By or Hibernate after running that last fix.  I'm also only using Avast, so I'm guessing that some components of CA may still be on this laptop, which is something I don't want.

I launched that link, but when I click on the CA Uninstaller it takes me to Remote Assistance and I don't know if I should go that route.  Would you recommend it?

The pop up I get happens during the start up of Windows and it's basically just a small window that reads "Windows Installer.......Preparing To Install.."

Download the windows uninstaller utility to clear the initial popup http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

For CA if you could run a fresh OTL log I will remove it manually for you

I downloaded the Windows Uninstaller Utility and afterwards it seemed to have brought back the issues with the trojan virus.  I did have some errors while running the Uninstaller and they are as follows:

Error 1500, Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installations before continuing this one.

(I ended processes dealing with CA through the Task Manager "Processes Tab" [Anything with the letters Umx and also Msiexec)

User 'SYSTEM' has previously initiated an install for product 'CA Personal Firewall.' That user will need to run that install again before they can use that product. Your current install will now continue.

Error 1704, An installation for CA Personal Firewall is currently suspended. You must undo the changes made by that installation to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?

(I responded with Yes)

After doing this the virus pop-ups once again started up and my firewall again became de-activated.  I decided to run MicrosoftFixIt again to correct the issue with the firewall, but I later also ran system restore to yesterday's date and it seems everything is back to normal.  I ran a Quick Scan through OTL and the info is down below.  I really appreciate all the help.

Run MSICU again and delete anything associated with CA.  As you can see it is still running a lot of files.  You may need the MSFixit again for the firewall

How would I go about deleting everything associated with CA using MSICU?  I ask because of the errors it gave me last time I ran it and also because it doesn't give me a list of what I can delete.  The firewall issue has been corrected, so that's fine now.  Can I run the OTL custom fix that you posted above first?

Yes - create a restore point first and then run the OTL fix

Could you run this MSFixit as it is the latest version of the cleanup utility  ( I have never had need to try this version)

I already ran the fix and I have attached the log as you asked.  Let me know if you'd still like me to run MSFixIt.
