undelete a file wich was deleted using avast
« on: December 18, 2004, 11:38:18 PM »
Hi,

my Outlook *.pst-file was infected by o virus.

Avast recognized it an ask if i wanted to delete it.

I said yes, without reading carefully that it is my pst-file. So the file vanished.

Is there an option to undelete it.

I used many tool, which are concentrated on finding deleted files through recycle bin or throug windows explorer. Some of them could find actually the deleted file. But the file-size is only 1KB. It is not the original file-size.

Is there an option to undelete the file, which was deleted using avast?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Nerhe

You should also search for your archive PST file. If you have that file, it can save you a lot of work... If not, just try to do as Eddy advised you...

Cheers !

Hi Eddy,

thanks for your useful link.

I had allready used "Handy Recover". It find the deleted pst-file, but the problem was that the file size was reduced to 1 KB, and outlook didn´t accept it as a working pst-file anymore.

Is it caused because how avast deletes infected files, or have been some data overwritten as i faultly installed an undelete-Programm to the same logical drive?

Are there any more chances to recover the original file?

Hi Craftec,

thank you for your help. But i didn´t use an archive-file.

I hope not... only a backup would solve this  :'(  :-\

Nerhe, file size was reduced just because most likely whole PST file was infected, or at least most of it... that's why it's reduced. No point in bringing back something that is infected. That's why it's always best to make backups on regular basis. Sorry to say, but your PST file is gone for good, although you still may need some mails from it, but that's the hard part with cleaning your computer if it's already infected.

Backups people, backups... they are very big part of private security lesson.

When Avast (or any other application) deletes a file, nothing happens to the size. It only changes if the diskspace the file was on is (partially) overwritten by another file. Only hope for you is a backup file or (if you really in a big need to get it back) a specialized company in data recovery like Ontrack. But that will cost a lot of money.

OK, i now learned my lesson.

"Make backups!"

Thanks to all of you.

Would the trial version of Ontracks product

"EasyRecovery Professional" do the job?

As I have explained twice. No.

Besides the trial doesn't do any recovery at all:
Quote
Identifies and allows you to view the deleted files and corrupted documents that are recoverable with a full edition of EasyRecovery Professional, while offering the Word and Zip repair component that allows you to recover and repair deleted or corrupt Word and Zip files!

Price for the full version : 1,499.00 usd

Try the free program Restoration (It's located towards the bottom of the page under the Undelete & Recovery category.) I've successfully used it to restore files before.
