Windows 7 can't login after update

I updated the Avast program file last night, it asked me to reboot which i did, however now i can't log into Windows.

When i enter my password it sticks on the "Welcome" screen, i left it over night and still there. I've tried to start in safe mode but exactly the same thing happens, please help...

Its Windows Ultimate 32bit
I dont know version of Avast because I cant get into windows to check
I see similar problems in forum but most replies are saying to install a tool, i cannot do this because i cannot get to windows.

Hmmm... avast! changes nothing in Safe Mode, you should be able to boot this way.
Something else is interfering...

Did you have any other security or antivirus program installed in the computer?
Were you installing the avast! free version? Did you download the new setup.exe file or you've upgraded from the avast! interface?

I have no other security software other than what is default on windows.

I installed the update from the Avast interface and all seemed ok until the restart. The Windows install is not too old, about 3 months so I dont have a great deal of software on there.

I have noticed when I start thru safe mode it gets so far and reboots without the option for safe mode.

I'm almost empty on ideas about what could have generate this problem

Seems no solution for this    In the end I thought it quicker to reload the OS, think next time ill risk a virus instead.

Sarcarms won't help you or anybody else...
There are tons of users that never experienced such trouble.
The Safe Mode trouble couldn't be avast! Your Windows has a trouble also.

Overinstallation can solve the problem and you won't lose your programs, settings, data, files, etc.
Just choose 'Repair' installation of Windows and install 'over' the old installation.
