It is disturbing that the replies from avast representatives are so disingenuous.

From a senior member, whatever that credential means:

A while back, when I started using Avast 4 on a Win98 system, I quickly discovered a bug where if you ran a scan from the Simple User Interface, after you closed the window, all of your normal file icons disappeared. They would come back after a reboot.

I came here to the forum to see others had posted about this very problem and they were told that it wasn't Avast's fault, it was that 98 was running out resources. People swore up and down that it wasn't technically a bug, just a side effect of Avast running on an old OS.

No, it was a bug.

No one said they expect a free antivirus "with[out] ads."

At the moment you can't even download the free version without manually copying the link. Clicking the download button produces a popup asking you to buy the paid version and the "No thanks" button doesn't work.

Works for me.  I just now went to www.avast.com, selected Downloads and clicked on the Free version.  When the offer came up for the paid versions, I clicked on the "No thanks" button and was redirected to CNet downloads when it can be downloaded.

HI I have seen ads in the avast free version once in a while though.  But it makes me mad that people want to crack avast software.  I must say avast good work on your part shutting down these cracked licenses for avast pro and free.

I like avast free keep up the great work avast team.

bye have a great day.

there's a giant pop-up in the corner once per day or so, offering me to buy their products.
That's a total exaggeration of what actually happens.

The occasional request to try either IS or the pro version isn't any big deal. After all,  you're receiving top notch protection
free of charge.
If it's that annoying, you can always downgrade your protection by changing to one of the other free AV programs.
I know that sounds a little harsh but it always rubs me the wrong way when ever someone moans about an occasional popup.
Simply close it and continue if you're not interested.  :)

+1!

I agree, there should be a check box that says, "Don't show this ad again."  Just click that.  I think I might get a non-related AV definition or program update pop-up twice a year, which is nothing considering that Avast has the best free AV protection available and is even better than many paid AV products.

Actually,

I did get one pop-up from Avast offering to upgrade to Avast IS.  I don't think there was an uncheck box for that.  Is this what people are asking about?  There was a check-box to not show a pop-up that said Avast was now available for some mobile device a few months ago.  That doesn't bother me.  However, some might be asking can you disable those pop-ups that promote services in settings, WITHOUT reducing protection?

These ads are not governed by the local avast! client but from the virus definitions/program updates.
They are very conservative on producing ads, but, of course, you can't receive none in the free version.

Still doesn't work for me using Firefox 12. Clicking on the No Thanks button does absolutely nothing.

One of your add ons is probably blocking the re-direct.

You can't tell others what is a big deal for them. It was not an "occasional" request. It was daily.

If people don't let Avast know how they feel about their product, then Avast cannot improve it. That includes, letting them know, when something is annoying about it.

Workarounds are not solutions. That the product is free, has no relevance. It's an annoying issue, and if Avast want users to use their free product, and of course they do, otherwise they wouldn't offer it, then they gotta satisfy the users.

I'm bringing this up again, because now it's windows 8, that they are advertising. 2 such ads withing the last hour.

If you don't want to see the notices about updates and what ever else is displayed with that notification,
Simply turn it of or, use the silent gaming mode. :)

The ads seem to have increased over the past 6 months. It's just random garbage popping up. I can't keep track of the ads and the surveys. During the presidential election Avast kept popping up ads about taking a survey. Today it's something about winning a surface tablet. I know it's free, I expect some advertising, but go back to the old way of advertising, in the Avast control panel. I have had several clients uninstall it because of the ads popping up in the right corner. The ads didn't get them to buy Avast they went to something else. Avast is a great product, the popup ads are very cheesy.
