Do you have full permission to re-name files etc?  You might not be "logged in" as admin for your system?  XP home on some systems doesn't allow this.

I think (might be way wrong) in XP home you can only log in as admin in safe mode, not through normal start-up ........... to make global changes to Windows.

Especially with pre-configured machines.

I'm sure there's a thread about this somewhere here.

Well, in safe mode I can log in as admin or under my name which is also an admin.  I haven't had any problems doing anything under my name on normal start up or safe mode.

Do you have the system password for safe-mode, not your log-in?

No, you set the system up through the restore disks.  So you don't know the password for full admin rights.

Ok I see what you're saying but I got to choose if I wanted to setup an admin password or not.  The restore disks just set the computer up how it was when I bought it.  Such as which software was installed.

inthewildteam: I dont know why you ask him about admin rights/safe mode/restore things - admin rights are required for avast installation; there's nothing bad with deleting/renaming system drivers in windows directory;

XQueenOfPainX: after renaming of aswTdi/aswMon2 drivers you have to reboot and then try shutdown; if it helps, you can reinstall avast without network shield provider (you can live without it).

well I've done everything else, so I guess I'll try reinstalling it and see if that gets rid of the problem.

So, you reinstalled avast without network shield provider, right ?
if yes, please download: http://cs.felk.cvut.cz/~kurtip1/loadord.exe
execute and press COPY button, run notepad and press CTRL+V, save the file and send me it to my email  - i'd like to find out which driver is problematic at least... thanks.
