Which OS (32bit/64bit, Service Pack)?
Which avast (Free, Pro, Security Suite)?
Which avast version?
Any other security related software installed (e.g. Firewall, Anti Malware)?

Please also answer this question:
did you have any antivirus software before using avast?

Same experience here
Fresh install Windows XP pro + SP3
Free Avast installed version 7.0.1407 then updated to  7.0.1426
When windows try to boot it freeze and nothing worked. Already uninstalled by Avast uninstall software from safe mode and reinstall Avast but when it updated to new version 7.0.1426 windows freeze on boot...
At-last I had to remove Avast...!

Something wrong with Avast new update 7.0.1426
Hope you can solve these issues

Thanx for taking the time

Have you tried a fresh install of version 7.0.1426? No update over 7.0.1407?

Not yet.
But it doesn't make sense. I can't download the full package instead of updating every time an update is available...
Anyway I'm going to download new version and test it. What else can I do...!
Avira free anti-virus is install and working on my computer now.

Thankx for replay

Before you install avast, please deinstall avira and clean leftovers with the uninstaller tool from here: http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Thanks for useful link
Avast 4.0.1426 has downloaded. I'll report back very soon

But Avast team must resolve this problem. It doesn't make sense users download the full package instead of upgrading via Avast software...!

I have also been having problems.

Dual booting Windows 7 64 bit on SSD and Windows 8 on regular SATA platter drive.

Was working ok then began getting constant freezes in Windows 7 but NOT in Windows 8.

Saw the messages about Avast  ver 7 freezing people's computer and said " AHA ".

Yesterday morning I un-installed Avast and haven't had a freeze since.

My laptop also running Windows 7 64 bit and Avast does NOT  freeze.

I suspect it is a combination of a Avast update, Windows version, and processor type.
This desktop has an I-7 processor the laptop has an old dual core processor.

The only combination that causes freezes is Windows 7, Avast, and the I-7 processor on my SSD.
With Avast and Windows 8 and the I-7 processor there is no freeze.

Many many people in the forums for my SSD drive Corsair Fore 3 have been fighting constant freezing also and Avast may also be their problem.

I just ran a virus scan using Avast ver 7 Internet Security on my Windows 8 installation and had it scan the Windows 7 SSD and it found two files that it couldn't scan because they were partially locked because another program was using part of them it said.

Very strange message, because NOTHING on the SSD drive should be being accessed because I booted into my Windows 8 drive.

The" busy " files were in Nvidia/GL Cache.

Scanning the Windows 8 disk with Avast it declares there are no infected files. No problems get reported.

I have spent 2 days trying to isolate a windows hang, slowdown and intermittent problems. After a repair install, the problem reappeared. Finally it was isolated to the avast update to 7.0.1407 to 7.0.1426.
I uninstalled avast, ran the cleanup program and tried to install the latest version 6. I received a message that a later version had been installed and avast would connect to the internet and download the latest version. Just where I came from. I removed all avast entries from the registry and all occurrences from the hard drive with the same result. Finally I abandoned installing avast and installed MSE in desperation.  This is a bad problem with avast which to date has been very reliable and rock solid. There should be an easy way to revert an upgrade without a system restore, it is only a third part product not an OS.
Hopefully this will help someone with the same problem.
