When is it being slow? During loading of the OS, or when you go to logon?

You can disable everything in the startup tab and it should not do anything to Windows. It sounds like you might have accidently unclicked something in the services tab.

If you did you can use these websites to figure out what needs to be on.

Windows XP:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Windows 2000:
http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm

For the computer going slow try these things:
Antivirus scan [full]
Ad-ware/Spy-ware scan [Try Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html]
Make sure you have at least a gig of free hard drive space.
Defrag hard drives.

Gavindyer, try Startup Delayer
It's the only freeware I've found that controls the windows startup (Windows 98\Me\2k\XP) that does not follow a strict order.

You can set some applications to start very after the boot (logon) itself.  ;)

Got to say since useing services.msc with the web site http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm start up is not only just quicker the system has become more stable to.

Still cant work out why sometimes not everything loads every time i.e. driver for usb modem - quite often i have to re boot as not able to connect to net could this be connected with avast! as this is always first to load????

Gavindyer, maybe you could delay the avast start... I say maybe because SP2 has a lot of features to enhance security on startup and shutdown and antivirus are very monitored.

I suppose your USB modem is detected as a hardware and does not have any startup link (on startup forder or windows registry)...
