Hi, I have an Acer with vista home premium  that I leave on 24/7 because I'm an user of the old Magic Jack. My other pcs I do shut down when not in use.

Buying the new Magic Jack Plus is probably a lot cheaper than replacing a burnt out motherboard.....  There are also many other benifits
such as much clearer connections, voice and some other benefits. But, it's your computer and your decision. :)

My workstation at work is turned on all the time (currently Dell Precision T1600, previously Dell Precision T1500, HP xw4600 and before some custom built PC) so I could remotely login to it, no problems with it (these competers are still running somewhere in the company). Also at home I had my personal desktop always on, also to be able to remotely login.

Well I will see your off-topic and raise another:
My router and hub have to remain on (BT Internet) for software updates and also BT say if you do constantly switch it off it can mess with your overall connection speed. As their monitoring system sees your constant disconnections and may lower your download rate to try and give a more stable connection. How true that is I don't know but I'm not about to risk it.
Veering ever further off-topic, I also use BT Internet and turn off the router every night. I've seen no change in connection speed (I don't use their supplied router though).

Regaining the carriageway, Linux users still seem to talk much of the hardware stress of start-up and how it should be avoided in their forums. This may be because a lot of Linux users seem to delight in running very old hardware and take a certain pride in their 'uptime'. Also only kernel changes tend to need a reboot in Linux.

If I am not planning to use my notebook, I just close a lid and it goes to sleep mode. When I need to use it again - it is ready to use within the seconds. It is not a good idea to leave it on 27/7/365. Have in mind what HDD is mechanical thing and has it's working hours threshold. It's already one year I have my notebook and it is interesting to know it was working almost 225 days out of 370 it is owned by me  ;D

So its good to shut it down every night?

That decision really has to be down to the user as to why they would leave it on 24/7, since the old reasoning of leaving it on 24/7 to reduce the stress of reboots has to a very large degree been superseded by better hardware.

You have all of the why for and why not information, so it is down to your use of the computer and whether that would require you leave it on 24/7 (we can't make that decision for you).

I spend time on several Linux forums, and I haven't noticed that. Can you cite a source(s) of your comment? Most threads I've seen regarding start-up/rebooting stress, are more like this one:

Why yes, yes we do.

 :)

I just installed Xubuntu 12.04, on a friend's old, unused XP box with a 1 point something GHZ CPU, and 1gb of Ram. He now has an up-to-date Linux distribution, that's as quick as a weasel, and it saved an old computer from the scrap heap. Ain't it great?

I'll have formed the view from the PCLinux OS forum (since that's the one I mainly view). Here's one example (reply 3):

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,104718.0.html

It was also advice I received about problems I was having with occasional boot failures (and a probable undersized PSU being the likely cause during the demands of start-up). Turned out to be a video card problem though.

I think you have made a fair observation - I am probably guilty of extrapolating the specific to the general here.

Interesting. I haven't been able to get bun2 or it's minty derivatives running on my old emachines 4062 since 9.04 without ever more aggressive acpi tweaks (noirqpoll, then pci=noacpi, now only acpi=off gets it to boot with 12.04- but that disables one of the two processors). PCLOS LXDE boots like lightning now (with a new video card installed).

bun2 12.04 is guesting dual booted with W7 on my laptop. It's fast too.

@ mag,
Adding items inside a quote no longer makes it a true quote.  :o

I leave my desktop computers on 24/7 so that the HDDs don't undergo on/off cycles that can cause unneccesary wear on the drive motor and heads; as far as I care to know HDDs are under the least amount of stress when they're turned on and spinning and this tidbit of knowledge has thus far not failed me. Obviously I keep the HDDs from turning off when they're idle too.

The only times my desktops get shut down is when I need to perform maintenance on them or when I'm not going to be using them for an extended period of time.

My laptops I try and turn off into sleep mode when I don't need them though, the increased heat factor stresses the components far worse than repeated on/off cycles ever will.
