I installed avast! for linux on multiple machines as:

Fedora, and fedora based distro
Debian (stable&testing) and Debian based distro
Genotoo and Sabayon (a gentoo based distro)
And of course ubuntu 11 and 12.04

The problem which I have with it EVERY time is this one:

An error occured in avast! engine: Invalid argument

or:

root@localhost avast
root@localhoste avast: can not initialize avast! engine: No such file or directory

Can be this fixed? Is very anoying

EDIT 1:

Here is a paste for EXAMPLE from Linux Mint Debian Edition box:

(It will be followed later by an edit 2 from sabayon)

The problem you have highlighted appears when trying to run avast from the application menu. Assuming you have registered the product key, it is resolved by following those instructions to edit /etc/init.d/rcS .

Do not execute avast as super-user/root/whatever - run as normal <user> instead.

... any luck.
