Check that your system date is correct day/month/year and adjust as required.

If the system date is correct:
- Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

No download the full database - avast! Virus Definitions Update - Manual Download VPS Update (virus definitions, vpsupd.exe, approx 31MB). - Save the file to your hard disk, locate where you saved it and double click it and that should carry out the virus definitions update.

Note: Ignore the file name in the images of the page that is displayed after clicking the download link, they are for the main program, not for vpsupd.exe which will be downloaded.

If you bought your AIS license via the avast.com site than you have nothing to fear on a reinstall. If you bought from an unknown source (not an authorised avast reseller), like ebay or other such auction site, then there is a strong chance you have been sold a non-legit license. These licenses are constantly being blocked, so you don't just have to reinstall for a non-legit license to be detected.

Exactly what was scanned by the sandbox (as it shouldn't have any problem with the manual update) ?
Are you saying that it is objecting to the vpsupd.exe file ?

If so set the AutoSandbox mode to Ask and if it interacts with the vpsupd.exe file, have the AutoSandbox open it normally and have it remember your answer for this program.

Note: you shouldn't have to continually use the manual update (downloading the whole vpsupd.exe virus database), that was done to get around your specific problem with the repair not working as the update package is broken. Downloading the full database should have resolved the inability to update automatically.
