Why do you say ComboFix is a serious choice? Do you know about it?
Indeed, I do.
ComboFix is a serious matter, you should not use it unless there are no other way to repair and you absolutely know what you're doing. Like all heavy medications, ComboFix has side effects too. It affects some windows core services that are impossible to return to their original state. In addition to that, some software would stop working after using combofix.

I see the problem still exists. Although my very same problem was fixed using Winsockfix, I remember I could still connect to the internet while using a third party anonymizer called Cproxy which is available to download for free via cproxy.com
with cproxy you can temporarily regain access to the internet at 32kps until a stable solution is found.
perhaps you could contact "winsockxpfix" developers and ask if there is any version for win7.
