Windows .NET update acting odd?
« on: May 22, 2012, 09:37:01 AM »
Surely I'm not the only one having this...

About 30 minutes Ago windows started to do it's update thing.  Perfectly Normal!  A simple 3 part upgrade to Windows .NET and Windows XP.  It finishes and doesn't need a restart.  ...Then I immediately get another.  That finishes and it continues.  Currently installing a 5th update and I'm starting to get concerned that something is wrong.

Running Windows XP, all service packs, etc etc.

The strange thing is that all 3 updates are rather old..!!
I therefore didn't allow them to download until further investigation.
If anyone has some info to share, it would be really helpful...

updated a 6TH time.  Compared the KB filesize and all 3 are the exact same size as in the previous update.  Not much info, but it's better than nothing.

Rebooted.  Still getting the update, and getting very frustrated/worried.

So don't allow the updates.  Set updates to notify you when available but you choose when/whether to install.

...is it sad that I never even thought of that?  For now, that's what I'll do, I guess.  Thank you.  Hopefully someone will have an answer for why Windows .MET is being such a derp.

More info,  Upon canceling, it reveals it is attempting updates that are completely different than what it actually tries to do.  Info following.

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2633880)
Security Update for .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2518864)

Neither of those updates match the 3 that it keeps on trying.

Acting odd is the understatement of the year; the .net framework updates have been a bl00dy nightmare for a very long time.

First there was a security update. that I believed was .net 4.0 as I also have that installed, so installed that and a couple of optional software ones. Windows update downloaded and installed these and rebooted. Now it has got itself in an infinite loop of download install reboot, notify of the updates again on the third loop I gave up and unchecked the 3 updates and selected don't show these again.

Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Most I can suggest is Running Microsoft Fix it like I did.  Best of luck!

Since it was an out of sync update patch Tue (not 2nd Tuesday of the month) I think it was just regurgitating old security updates, which I had previously installed. So I already took care of it using the hide these updates function.

I'm not a fan of the beta fix it tool.

Thanks Dave. It seems MS messed something up...
I certainly won't allow it to download and play "loop games". ;)
Still wonder about the old dates..?!?

Thanks goodness somebody posted the 'Windows .NET update acting odd?' and yes I have the same problem, unless I'm prepared to bash MS with a baseball bat because I don't want to end up the same pathway in the past as the .net framework updates have been given a bloody nightmare for a very long time.

Anyway it time for me to  :-X ;)
