i forgot to tell you that when i restarted after the full scan, the norton on line backup icon still keeps popping up in my hp advisor dock.  if you move it to the desktop, it's supposed to be gone, not reappearing after a restart.  one more question, do i turn on the hp system firewall or does avast firewall cover the firewall for both ?  i haven't touched the hp firewall, i just wanted to make sure.

Hi,

Please be sure to attach the log made by aswMBR.exe so we can give that a good look over. Sorry...missed the post above.  :)

Hi,

Please download and run ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT).  This program allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.  **Remember if you are using Windows Vista as your operating system right-click the executable and Run as Administrator.

bambibear,

No real rush here.  How it works is jeffce will work closely with you, and once the system is clear, he will let you know that.  Additional programs will be run as requested, but if these three tools do the job, that may not be necessary.

There is stuff on your system that needs to be removed, however.  It needs to go, ok?

Just thought you might want to know.
Windows 10 Home 64-bit 22H2 Avast Premier Security version 24.1.6099 (build 24.1.88821.762)  UI version 1.0.797

hi.  i hope i did the ERUNT right.  it saved it to the ERUNT folder, whereever that is.

i came back, got the info for the OTL, copy & pasted, & ran the fix.  it was doing it's speedy scan, but then came up "not responding".  about 2 min. later the computer restarted & a box from ERUNT came ip & said i would have to save items manually.  now i'm scared, what did i do ???  the first log is where all this happened.

so, i figured maybe it was done & i did the rescan.  log # 2

let me know if i redo these & how can i copy the ERUNT to a back-up cd or dvd ?  is that allowed ?

Work with jeffce. You are in good hands.  Backup whatever you wish to a dvd is ok.

As this is new stuff, is ok.

Hi,

I see you had some problems.....

Don't worry about this.  It happens because of the UAC with your operating system which is not allowing an automatic run of the program.  Just disregard it for now and we can fix that up later....but nothing is wrong.  :)  Oh...don't worry about backing up ERUNT to a disk either right now...let's get your system cleaned up first so that the malware isn't sitting in the registry.
----------

Ok...for running OTL.  Looks like there were some problems with that.  Please boot to Safe Mode and try to run the fix that I provided earlier with OTL from there.

ok.  got into safe mode, haven't done that in a very long time, had to think about what was going on.  ok, scan 10 is the safe mode.  scan 11 is the quick  scan as i did the quick scan earlier or yesterday.  i unchecked those not to be checked & when the quick scan started, they re-checked themselves.  well, here we go.  hope i get good news.

Great job getting that ran.  If you have any questions as we go along or if you are unsure of how to do something be sure to let me know.  :)

Malwarebytes

I see that you have Malwarebytes already on your computer.  Please open Malwarebytes, update it and then run a Quick Scan.  Save the log that is created for your next reply.
----------

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan[/i]
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats is NOT selected and the option Scan unwanted applications is selected.
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

i will definately let you know if i have problems.  i got malwarebytes here thru an article mchain gave me, i just don't how to get the log files from the malwarebytes.

i agree with you, the ESET online scanner is a time consuming scan.  microsoft support had me use this, i think it was, last month when i had problems with their security essentials.  it came up negative.
