REGISTRY DEFRAGMENTATION.
« on: June 20, 2012, 05:21:12 PM »
hi
Is it a good idea to defrag the registry?
If so could anyone recommend any good programs for this purpose?
Thanks.

For the most part there is little benefit in it and messing with the registry can ruin your whole day (and possibly longer).

Before even contemplating such a thing you should have a robust backup and recovery strategy; that usually takes the form of hard disk imaging software, where you can restore an exact copy of a partition/disk from outside windows.

The free version of Puran Defrag will defragment the registry, the MFT, and the pagefile in a boot time defrag. It's also perfectly safe.

You can try Eusing Free Registry Defrag

http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_defrag/registry_defrag.htm
If i was to ever use anything in the registry further than what CCleaner can do it would only be Eusing, great program. As DavidR mentioned earlyer Backup strategy comes first !

Ive read that the boot time defrag in puran deletes the restore points.
Im actually using puran and it seems a very good program.

You have read wrong. It doesn't do anything to the restore points except defragment them.  In fact, sometimes they don't get defragmented so I have adopted the practice of turning off System Restore before doing a boot defrag and then turning it back on afterwards and creating a new fresh starting point.
