avast! External Control 1.6 Released!!!
« on: December 29, 2004, 06:18:42 PM »
Sorry for creating another thread, but i just couldn't help myself ;)

New in version 1.6:
+v1.6 is now compatible with avast! 4.5
+AEC icon changed to toolbox icon
+Removed some functions not related to avast!
+Removed some features that were too hard to implement with avast! 4.5
+Fixed tweaker checkbox detection
+Fixed Main Control
+Added External VPS Update
+Added warning before entering Storage Database switcher
+Removed “Show details on performed action” tag number limit tweak until I find suitable interface design
+Removed Brutal Remove and replace it with new avast! Uninstall Utility
+Redesigned entire External On-Demand part
+Redesigned avast! Detection script
+Other small things not visible to user ;)

Download:
www.excessive-software.tk

If you see old page content, just double-click Refresh button or clear browser cache.
All current AEC users can update through integrated SmartUpdate feature :)

This version might look like and downgrade, but there was no other way.
Also it might contain some already "fixed" bugs because i ressurected AEC from older source code. If you notice any, just contact me :)
Thanks

Downloading for tests  ;)

  • http://www.security-ops.tk/ is opened into IE and not into the default browser and closes AEC, on contrary to the other functions.
  • avast Tweaker could be more items...  :'(
  • Disabling avast does not invoke the Central Security for me... Is it really disabled?
  • AutoRestart function invoke the Central Security for a while and then the icon disapeared (when avast is loaded again)

Security-Ops page is opened in IE by design, because nearly all scanners require ActiveX. My page is 100% safe so you shouldn't worry.
I'll think about using default browser...

Could you please check the state of processes/services after Disable and Auto-Restart command. Worked fine for me when i was testing it,although i'm not using Internet Mail provider...
Also after each complete action in Main Control you should get popup window.
Thx

Me too like to see the page opened in the default browser.

ps: Avast starts with a capital, you got a lowercase on your website.
(avast! External Control 1.6) ;D

Ok,i'll reconsider about browser stuff :)
Btw avast! is written with lowercase first letter. It always was and still is :P

I miss the following items:

  • Skin Packer launcher (you've removed since 0.9.108 version)
  • Chest launcher
  • Quick Log Viewer launcher
  • Mail Protection Wizard
  • External On-Demand scanner add-ons: startup and memory scan and physical memory scan (both normal and thorough)
  • VPS and Core Update Launcher (not the webpage)
  • On-Demand Scan external ashQuick command (Single file, Folder or drive scan)
  • VRDB generation interval tweak
  • PUSH update system status info
  • The functions not related to avast! that were removed: ZIP Archive Extractor function and avast! Optimization Wizard (full avast! files defragmentation)
  • Why did you change the Brutal Remove function by the generic uninstall utility from Alwil?
  • Why did you change the AEC icon?

# External On-Demand scanner add-ons: startup and memory scan and physical memory scan (both normal and thorough)
Well this is still present in a bit more improved form.

Quote
# VPS and Core Update Launcher (not the webpage)
Worked only with Pro edition so i decided to remove it.

Quote
# On-Demand Scan external ashQuick command (Single file, Folder or drive scan)
It's still there. Everything related to ashQuick is located under External On-Demand Scan function.

Quote
# VRDB generation interval tweak
Removed it since default value is all around best.

Quote
# PUSH update system status info
Detection script problems

Quote
# The functions not related to avast! that were removed: ZIP Archive Extractor function and avast! Optimization Wizard (full avast! files defragmentation)
ZIP Archive might be back in next version, but for now it was removed.
Optimizator removed since since my mind was elsewhere when i designed that stuff. Programs can be resident and defragmenter will still defrgment them. These things work on totaly different levels so they don't interfer between eachother.

# Why did you change the Brutal Remove function by the generic uninstall utility from Alwil?
It's by design. Brutal Remove was fine, but flawed and relied on its detected installation path. I belive generic uninstaller from Alwil is a better choice. And it erases all related things not just those which i managed to spot (especially low level drivers were difficult).

# Why did you change the AEC icon?
I don't know exactly. I felt like i have to change something.
"a" ball was used without Alwil's permission so this can be another reason for change (i decided so,Alwil guys didn't force me :P ).
Anyway toolbox looks fine too i think.
