« on: January 03, 2005, 03:03:59 AM »
I dont have the "a" and "f" balls in my task bar. I have tried reloading avast and unchecking the hide inactive objects in my task bar, but they still arent there. What should i do to fix this problem. Thnx

The blue ball icons have disappeared from my system tray too.
I had just upgraded from Windows 98SE to Windows XP Professional.
I right-clicked on the Taskbar and chose Properties and on the dialog box "Taskbar and Start menu properties" unchecked the Hide inactive icons check box but this did not work.
I uninstalled avast! 4 Home edition and downloaded and re-registered but this did not work either.
Resident Protection is disabled but I cannot find a way of enabling it.
Many thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome
try repairing your installation
add/remove programs / remove / repair
and see what effect that has on your system
sometimes doing a quick scan and rebooting is all it needs

Feri-D, after upgrading from 98 to XP you need to reinstall Avast. Use the uninstall util from the website to remove Avast. Reboot and reinstall.

Brian and Feri, did you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?

The icons should appear when ashDisp.exe is listed on the startup itens.
They could come back gointo to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove then choosing Repair function in the pop up window (Repair).

Btw, it's an 'a' and an 'i' and not 'f'  ;)

After reading Eddy’s comments, I realized that I had uninstalled and reinstalled Avast and then I had done a reboot (i.e. I had missed the reboot step between uninstall and reinstall).

Brian - This time I uninstalled, rebooted, installed, rebooted and now both blue ball icons are back. Good Luck, I hope this resolve your problem too.

Thank you everyone for your help.

I am having the exact same problem.  I just uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooting after each, and I cannot get the Resident Protection to stay enabled, so I do not have the icons in the sys tray.

I am running XP, pentium 4, 3 gz laptop.  I had installed avast on my personal pc (the laptop is a friends), without any of these problems, so I am at a loss.  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

If you run (execute) ashDisp.exe from avast folder, do you get the icons?

I need to go to bed  ;)
So, if it does not work, please:
1. Disable your startup monitor if any (TeaTimer, PrevX, etc.)
2. Uninstall
3. Boot
4. Disable your startup monitor again
5. Install
6. Boot again

You should have an entry for ashDisp.exe into your Windows Registry startup (run) keys  :)

Thanks for the welcome, and the quick reply...

When I run ashDisp.exe, I do get the icons in the systray.  However, the "a" icon has a red slash through it.  I tried going back and enabling the residency protection, but it continues to go back to disabled.  I then double-clicked the "a" icon, and I get a message "avast!: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error.".

Any ideas?

Not sure this is the fix I need, because even after I manually run ashDisp, the Residency Protection cannot be enabled...

Nevermind.  I rebooted after running the ashDisp, and the icons remained, and were active.  Thanks for your help, sleep tight... :)
