« on: December 30, 2004, 03:04:26 AM »
Hello I am a new user of Avast antivirus. This stuff works great!

However, I found that the ashserv.exe consume lots of memory, why is it so??? Are there any method to lower the consumption?? Thanks!!

Hi and welcome loreley
as you will notice if  you right click A ball you have 6 providers probably running which may or may not all be nessesary , if for instance as i do not load mail to my pc i disable the outlook provider.
if you dont use instant messaging or p2p programs there are other providers you can disable. this may get memory usage to where you are comfortable.
hope this helps  :)

Could you please notify back when you get details on other A/V products as this is a topic often discussed and seldom is there a clear definitive picture on what other options requirements are and how they compare.

Yeah, this is a hot topic. I have used avg before and I didn't experience this problem.

I don't think the amount of memory it shows is correct. This can only be correct if Avast is scanning some big file/archive imo.

I have no idea. My memmonster shows that it eats up ~190mb for every time I checked.   :(

Make sure you have no malware on your system (See the malware removal section on the page in my signature).

Also disable everything from loading at boottime that isn't really needed for the system to work properly.

Let us know if that solves the problem.

Its wrong for sure. Such amount is only possible if you scan ISO CD image because there is some bug that almost kills avast! while scanning such files.
Otherwise memory usage of avast! never exceeds 18MB, 20MB at most (really extreme situations).

Thank you for your reply, I also agree there must be some problems exist. Maybe I reinstall it and see the problem still exist or not.

IS this the number you get just after a clean boot, or it starts OK (let's say with 20M) and then keeps consuming more and more?

Igor (who's generally our Win9x-guy) is currently not here - maybe we'll come up with something anyway... :)

Thanks

I have tried it at home, my memmonster showed that ashserv.exe consume 11Xmb of memory. I use WinMe at home. I suspect it is the problem of memmonster.

Well, I have tried kinda the same software that "organizes" your memory more efficient,...but in the end it only slowed everything down, and it used more resources too,...  so,...  :o

In my opinion those programs are kinda useless cause for what I know,..Windows does a good job in using the memory,...  ;)

btw, mine shows 17 MB of ram,...so I guess this is normal :)
