I've stayed out of this thread and others like it to see what developed with the toaster ads. I was getting them back in June and then they stopped for a bit in early July, and now I see we're back to getting them with every single update. It looks like they shrunk them down a bit but I'm not a fan of it either way. Like other people I have clients that I have recommended Avast to and I have installed it on their machines. I have had numerous inquiries about the Avast toaster ads and some people thought they had spyware on their system because of these ads. I had several clients uninstall Avast and install MSE themselves or asked if I could install something else for them. I've been using Avast since 2005 and I have to say I really don't like where they're going with ads.

Oh and Bob3160, before you come running back into the thread with your Avast cheer leading outfit on and your poms poms flailing around, let me just say I don't care that you've been using it for 9 years and don't care for your 5 cent pearls of wisdom.

I stopped by to say pretty much the same thing that compmanio36 said. I also support several people and computers amongst family and friends. I have gotten asked about the popups lately and I am still seeing them. Being a Comcast subscriber for now, I have Norton Security Suite offered to me for free with my ISP subscription. Some of the other people that I support also have this option.

FWIW, I repair PC's for free, and am the technology go-to guy for nearly everything, especially anti-virus.  I keep a *tight* track of year to year progress in AV-Comparatives.org.  I also have NSS.  And ------punted it------ for a simple reason: runaway bandwidth hogging processes.  There are routine complaints about it, and lots of "well I had that and try this" which only sometimes works.  I finally gave and am moving everyone over to Avast free.  BTW, it took some digging to discover this, but NSS is *NOT* 360.  It's based upon 360, but is a standalone product of its own, with its own sets of hooey.

I was a huge advocate of NIS from 2009 on (when they redesigned it to not suck the CPU to zero).  And then recently....tried NSS for months, which was a disaster.

Can you use sounds independently of the green slider? If you absolutely must have notification every time you could use sound only, if it's possible.

I have been a long time user of Avast (going on a decade now), but I am starting to seriously consider switching to something else like MSE due to all the blasted nag screens that are appearing.  First it was a nag box about upgrading to the paid version but only showed up every few days.  I got that to go away by unchecking all the community options.  Now with every update of the definitions, there is a window "You've got basic protection, do you need more?" NO. I DO NOT NEED MORE. I WILL -NEVER- UPGRADE TO THE PAID VERSION.  STOP BUGGING ME ABOUT IT.  As far as I can tell there is no way to get rid of this.

To the developers at Avast: You will begin losing FAR more users of your free version than you will ever get back in paid subscriptions doing this.  If this does not stop, I will be switching and recommending all my friends and family switch as well.  A message when you open the main window was fine.  A message when you register every year asking if you want to upgrade is fine.  But this is BS of the highest order to get a popup with every virus definition update.  It's ridiculous, and I think many agree with me.  I understand you need people to sign up for the paid version to make money off this program.  I would think business users would bring in enough revenue....maybe you should focus on going after those that don't qualify for the free version but are using it anyways.  Irritating your users of the free version to upgrade will do nothing but push people to other options in the long run.

Forget MSE, it slows down the pc to a crawl, plus it uses about 250~300 MB of your RAM! In plain english: it sucks!

Well your running a free version it don't bother me as i am also on the free version. if you had the paid version then you would be getting other pop ups for something else. the saying goes you don't get nothing for free. they put in advertisements in it so that makes it free to you as they are advertising something which gets them money so they can hand it out for free. simples!!

The big double ads are back and the show last pop up is greyed out because of it.

Well the update_ad popup was on my win7 system and that didn't stop me being able to use the Show last popup message.

What I've heard is that it's only on XP.

No it was previously the same on my win7 netbook, I think more when it was doing a double notification (which has stopped on my win7 system).

Basically the reason i hate the ads are because they crash combat arms while im in game. I dont know if youve ever played but to have the game to crash to see an avast ad is like pulling the t.v. cord out of the wall in the last minutes of a football game. uggghh >:(

Tango, set avast to Silent/Game mode... It's that simple.
