Missing buttons in 9.0.2008 WebShield settings
« on: November 23, 2013, 01:12:30 PM »
I've started this as a new thread to separate it out from the main http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=139606.msg1024785#msg1024785 thread.

It's also raised in this thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=138336

The problem is that I am unable to add process to be excluded from the WebShield.
On the Web shield settings window, under the "Exclusions" option there are three areas; the first two (URLs and MIME types to exclude) work fine, but the third ("Processes to exclude") doesn't work.

Checking the tick box makes the "Add" button light up but it doesn't do anything.
Also, clicking in the blank "box" doesn't generate a new entry like the preceding two areas.
Attached is a screenshot if what I see.

I'm about to try a clean / re-install of Avast on one of my machine to see if it fixes it.

EDIT: Tried that, made no difference.

I have the EXACT same problem.  Since my subscription to avast! Internet Security was about to expire in 7 days, I decided to uninstall it and install the free version instead.  I un-installed avast! IS via the Windows Control Panel, then ran the avastclear.exe program in safe mode, then ran avast Clean Up tool 1.3 (by Razor) also in safe mode, rebooting after each program.

I then installed the latest version of avast! Free and rebooted.  Everything appears to be working fine, BUT for this problem.

Sorry I couldn't offer you any help.  Let us know if a repair resolves your problem . . . .

The problem is that I am unable to add process to be excluded from the WebShield.

Same problem here with the latest build of Avast.
Basically, after putting the check mark in "processes to exclude", when I click on the "add" button, nothing happens and nothing else appears - just like in your attached  screenshot.

Win XP Pro SP3 + Win7 (32bit)
Avast! Free AV 9.0.2008
Online Armor Free 7.0.0.1866

P.S., both the systems I checked were clean install of Avast

Looks like there was an emergency update pushed out today as reported by iroc9555 - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=139606.msg1024873#msg1024873 - which appears to have resolved this on his system.

I did notice the emergency update kick in when I started this morning, mainly as WinPatrol Plus flagged it (new startup entry) and I allowed it (Image1&2). Given that if this really was a registry entry, I guess it won't take effect until you restart.

Having checked WinPatrol Plus (image3), I see it in my Startup Programs and it has /check at the end of the string, I really don't know if this was an actual emergency update or not or that it checks on the next startup.

Have the new startup entry disappeared after the system restart?

Well I have rebooted twice and shutdown once and the emupdate still there. However my exclusion have been fixed in Web Shield as davidR mentioned above. I do not know if this EmUpdate has anything to do with it though.

Nope. Unfortunately, mine is still not working.

For the persistent new startup entry, see here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=140730.0

I haven't restarted, but I doubt it would be gone or the registry entry would have been a Run Once entry. At first this is what I though it might be a run once to run the fix, etc. rather than having a /check at the end of the string.

EDIT: all this said I don't believe this specifically address the problem of the missing buttons, so we should get back on topic relating to the missing buttons in the UI.

I just cleaned/re-installed (No change on the missing buttons) but I also see an emergency update in the autoruns, Except it's flagged as "File-not-found"!

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\20131121

File not found: C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\setup\emupdate\2ecbfce3-4ff3-4e78-9310-a271085f85d9.exe /check

And I've checked, the "emupdate" folder isn't there.
Does that mean it's been run, or what?

Sorry guys. I thought the EmUpdate had something to do with it. I only know that the exclusion processes option was not working for me before, long time, I never paid attention before cause I thought it had something to do with the firewall that I do not have. However since this morning, after the EmUpdate was installed, is working as shown in my screenshots.

@ Alan41238584
I think that this initial process, was probably generated by the AvastEmUpdate.exe function, so I don't believe that it has run as such.

Even after it has run I don't think that it should disappear, otherwise creating it as a HKLM registry startup item would have been pointless. That folder and unique file name are both present on my system.

Unfortunately it looks like there is something else going on with your system.

What other security based software do you have installed (firewall, anti-spyware, etc. etc.).

The only other "security type" s/w I run is "Windows7FirewallControl",
but all that does is make it easy to configure the Windows firewall to disable/allow outgoing connections from particular executables.

Woh! - I just make it appear!

-- I opened the "Web shield settings" window on the "Exclusions" option
-- I ticked the "Processes to exclude" checkbox
-- I clicked on the "Actions" option to move away from that page
-- When I went back to the "Exclusions" option, the "Processes to exclude" was working!

MORE INFO:
if I close all Avast windows & open them, if fails to appear again but the above sequence makes it work once more. Seems to fail/re-appear consistently.
