Title: Avast Service will not start.
Post by: Laz22343 on April 07, 2014, 11:38:52 PM
Hello,

I've used avast for years and have never had a single problem, until a few days ago..

I booted up my pc like always, but this time noticed the red 'x' over avast in the system tray. I checked to see the problem and it said the avast service is off. So I tried to start it, no luck. Asks for admin permission, but that's it.

So I googled and followed a few fixes posted here. Uninstalled avast around 5 times, with clean install. Used a fresh installation, nothing fixes it. I even attempted to use an older version as someone said worked for them to no avail.

One thing I did notice is when I attempted to uninstall via the Control Panel, once it reached the end and tried to launch VisthAux.exe, it would just hang in that state forever. This would make me restart the computer and use the avast clean tool.

Is there any way to fix this? As of right now I have uninstalled avast.

Thanks so much, I just really would like to get this wonderful program working again!

I am running windows 7 home edition with service patch 1, btw.

was previous used AV removed with that vendors removal tool?

Why Using Multiple Antivirus Programs is a Bad Idea    http://blog.kaspersky.com/multiple-antivirus-programs-bad-idea/

removal tools is recomended to be used to clear all conflicting files

There are still some low level drivers that can conflict. ;)

How can I ascertain whether there is software conflict? I have not seen it so far.

How can I ascertain whether there is software conflict? I have not seen it so far.

Basically, you can't, until you run into problems. ;) Excerpt from the FAQ:

When and why a third-party antivirus software should be uninstalled?
If you want to install avast! antivirus software on your computer, please ensure that there is no any other third-party antivirus software already installed. Running multiple antivirus programs on the same computer can cause conflicts, that usually result in false positive detections, performance degradation and system instability. Therefore it is strongly recommended to uninstall all other previously installed antivirus applications before installing avast! on your computer.

I uninstalled the previous AV before installation of avast, thereafter I installed another one, which will be uninstalled if problems arise.

No, I've only ever had Avast installed. I do have MalwareBytes installed but it's not a active shield, I only use it to run scans on my system every now and then. I've had both installed for over a year now, with no problems. :/

Are you sure that avast was thoroughly uninstalled before reinstallation? The Add/Remove Programs may be unable to do the job well.

I am running windows 7 home premium with service pack 1, btw.

Yeah, as I stated in the original post, I used CP only to have it freeze on the VisthAux.exe portion, then used the avast clear program. Tried this several times with no luck. Even used CCleaner to remove all reg entries.

Thanks for the help though, I just would like another option. :/

1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

Thanks Matthew,

I also tried the uninstall tool and then reinstall, but unfortunately that didn't work. The last time this issue happened I just waited until the next day for the latest Avast update and things were fine. Just to confirm, does Avast do daily updates?

This is a major issue because it almost renders my PC useless for the first 10 minutes or so. I am surprised there hasn't been more cases reported on these forums. If this continues, I will have to go with another anti-virus which is too bad since I have been using Avast for years now.

If it helps, I am running Win 8.1, Samsung EVO 840 SSD, Asus ROG MB, GTX 670.

- Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
- Which version..??
- OS..?? (32/64 Bit..? - which SP..?)
- Other security related software installed..??
- Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..??

csbear, do you mean your Active Protection does not work until avast updates take place?

does Avast do daily updates?
Yes, definitely. My streaming updates took place 184 times in the last 24 hours.

10 minutes or so.
At my end, auto update is usually done in one minute.

Well more problems now. I downloaded the new version of MBAM and now my comp freezes and automatically restarts at around 90% scan completion. I think this may have to do with my HDD itself. It's been acting like it is dying every now and then for the past few months.

I did run a scan with the previous version of MBAM right when my Avast troubles started, and it came back clean. I really don't think I have any malware causing this. But everything I do doesn't seem to help. :/

Wow- and I thought this was only an issue with windows xp. I have to wait at least 10 minutes for the hard drive to stop spinning before I can log into windows. If I don't AIS will not load, it will sit in the task bar calling up svchost to eat up 100% of CPU. I've pared down processes to 25 running in memory, and run process hacker that shows 100% of CPU resources being consumed between Avast and svchost. This started right after the last program update to 9.0.2016. I've done scans with Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes (on demand only), run a Bitdefender Rescue CD (updated definitions), full scan with Avast, Boot-time scan with Avast, a repair installation of Avast, reset to default settings and then ran out of ideas on what else I can do. I've installed this on 2 customers computers running win xp that are complaining of this same issue. Now reading this thread its not about xp at all. I hope Avast sorts this out- because I've tried everything I know to do.

If you look at this whole forum, everyone is having the same problem since the latest update it seems- won't load, won't update, freezes, crashes, network issues, etc. Your going to have these issues if 100% of the CPU resources are tied up. This is most likely caused by the same thing that's been causing my issue of having to wait at least 10 minutes to boot up or AIS won't load- AvastSvc.exe is calling up svchost.exe to run at 100% CPU resources. The occasional updates call svchost.exe to 100%, and sometimes when web shield kicks in- again 100% of the CPU being called up causing each and every one of the issues mentioned above. I've checked this everytime I freeze up with process hacker and svchost is sucking up CPU resources at 100%- ever since the last program update this problem started. I've been through the repair installs, scans, EVERYTHING with the exception of uninstalling Avast altogether and installing something else instead. Just look at all the post's being made- and reply to them to wait at least 10 minutes to boot up before logging in and see how many issues are fixed. Have them keep process manager up once it goes to update and see how svchost is locking up their computers due to Avast. I like Avast, but this is a fairly common issue with a number of different symptoms across various windows versions, And they all started after updating to 9.9.2014.

This is a major bummer because I loved avast, and I really don't want to use any other AV software.

Repair avast!:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

As I said earlier in the thread, during repair or uninstalling via the CPanel, it gets near the end and locks up during the execution of "VisthAux.exe"

Obviously Defender is installed as it's part of the OS on win7, aside from Defender being next to useless it does not interfere with avast.

Hello,

For XP, I believe to have found the cause of this problem, on the page http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=149216.15 . RĂ©ponse # 19.
The version 9 cannot be installed (settled) in personal mode.

That works correctly in the installing in  C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast

We see this defect in the file
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\log
Event.log :
23/04/2014   15:09:28   AAVM - initialization error: g_tdi.Initialize failed! (logName: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\log\nshield.log), 00000000.

I hope to have been able to inform you correctly, my English not being very good but I use a site of translation.

Goodbye.  :)

Sorry, since your avast isn't working, then what other AV are you using now?

Laz223343, since you already tried:
-  the latest version of Avast and that didn't work
-  did a clean install of Avast unsuccessfully
-  are not running any other security programs other than MBAM

I think you're at the point of running an OTL log for someone to review to see if something is wrong with your machine.  We understand your concern with privacy.  I suggest that you follow the directions previously given to you or read or read the 2nd post down in the Virus section of the Forum and private message (PM) your log as an ATTACHMENT to Essexboy.  After running the OTL log, do not make any changes to your machine until he reviews it and gives you further instructions.

Ok yeah I'll run the OTL again and PM it.

And I'm not using any AV programs at the moment.

Is it possible that malware is already on your unprotected computer at the moment?

I don't think so, I've run MBAM full scans a few times and came back with nothing.

Then you have to run it every day because no AV is running on your computer, good luck!

I'd love to have a AV running, but avast apparently is never going to work for me again. :(

360 Internet Security is free and serves as a second choice on my computer.
You may consider it.

Hello,

On my computer, all the partitions(scores) were not with the same system

Since C:  is in NTFS, as the others, Avast 9 installed there D: work correctly.

You can read the answer #24 on this page :

Ive had a lot of problems with this since the last update - it seems Avast is arguing with firewalls even if you white list them .

I have tried no avast - firewall works fine
No firewall - avast eventually loads

Both together - firewall wont load and avast takes about 6 minutes to load ( service is running BUT avast reports it isnt , has a hissy fit , freezes computer then agrees it is running and lets me have computer back ).  I have MBAM but its on demand and I have disabled MS defender and firewall and use Commodo - There are lots of posts over on commodo about avast suddenly fighting commodo .

How about Windows Defender?
Obviously Defender is installed as it's part of the OS on win7, aside from Defender being next to useless it does not interfere with avast.

I recently had the same issues.  I tried everything and I decided to check out my Administrative Services area to see if Windows Defender was still disabled.  It was Not disabled and once again I disabled it, rebooted my computer and sure enough my problem was resolved.  Not to rock the boat with your reply, Windows Defender does interfere with Avast, at least it did with my computer.

Thanks for your time and please enjoy your day or evening.

I checked it out through C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui
