Title: Forum relaunch
Post by: chocholo on June 13, 2014, 05:15:28 PM
Hello,
We launched our forum again. There are few improvements, almost all of them are under hood (speedups, infrastructure changes, most visible is MyAvast account integration - all you need to get logged in on the forum is to login to your MyAvast account).
Forum should be much faster than before.

I can't get signed back in under my Evangelist account (schmidthouse)

Very confusing when asked for user name and password (which is normal) BUT, when entered says "doesn't look like an email address"!! Didn't ask for an email address it asked for USERNAME.
In any case didn't recognize email address and ended up with some new account.
Any assistance would be appreciated. ;)

While it was indeed unfortunate the Avast! Forums got hacked...the process for trying to get re-established under my original account here was a horrendous pain in the ***!  All information I entered was correct from the email account, password, etc, yet Avast! just could NOT seem to get its act together!  Spent over an hour going around and around with this blasted mess before Avast could get it right!

This forum could NOT even manage to send the confirmation email to my email address (a completely valid address by the way)......and that is after waiting 45 minutes for them to even send it.

I ended up having to create a brand new account altogether, new email address, etc, etc.  So needless to say...I am VERY pissed at this point!  ALL my previous posts, PM's etc are of course...obviously now gone into oblivion.

And, by the way...despite enlarging the font here to 300%...I still have major problems with trying to read the verification code, nor does trying to LISTEN to them help me either!

Get your act together Avast!  >:(

Changed my password without any issues.
It's great to have the forums back.  ;D ;)  ;D

@ kls490a

1) Log-out
2) Log-in
3) Click "forgot log-in information".
4) Follow the procedure to reset password.

It took me all of five minutes on a 8 MB/sec connection.  8)

I used the same e-mailaddress for the program and for this form. But when I login with that e-mailaddress it doesn't make the link to my original username. So now I have a brand new account... I am NOT amused.  >:(

Also, I expected an e-mail to inform me about the forum being fixed and with a link to recover my original profile. I mean, there was an e-mail informing the forum was down... Again: NOT amused.  >:(

And I can only agree with kls490a: the CAPTCHA is a real PITA. Very difficult to read. Too difficult!

Changed my password without any issues.
It's great to have the forums back.  ;D ;)  ;D

I have a 30Mbps connection, but your m.o. doesn't work for me. Probably because I used the same e-mailaddress for the avast! account and the avast! forum account.

Edit 1: Can't seem to create an avatar either. Not with a URL and not with uploading.

Edit 2: This problem is solved, but I still can't access my old profile... :(

Interesting at my end ... I was delighted to see the email from chocholo, clicked on my old bookmark and found myself at the https addy, already logged in.

The only minor problem apparently was with some cookies ... as others have noted, I found that all postings in all forums were considered "new", plus I had to reset my local time.  So I left (without logging out), deleted all avast cookies (without touching permissions), came back in and made appropriate changes including "mark all as read", and things seem to be fine now.

Part of the minor problems may have been due to the upgrade to Firefox 30 ... I found that "site preferences" for some other places, such as Amazon, have also gone astray and need restored.

Many thanks, chocolo (and probably Vlk and others, too), it's good to be back.

I used the login of my avast account but had to choose a different display name to the one I previously had on the forum. I had a different email address on the old forum

I've now noticed that when I click on My Devices within the program an "Unexpected Error" is shown and in General Settings my avast account status is shown as "not connected".

Thanks for your comments, however to be blunt......I had already done everything you stated and still Avast! managed to screw everything up!  Sorry.

Like Cyberpunk2...I ALSO have a 30 mbps connection.

I've said my peace here.  Any further discussion is pointless and only serves to anger me even more than I presently am...which I hardly need at my age and end-stage health status.

Regards.

I don't understand why it took 3 weeks? Why is the site so messed up? It takes about the length, but not the width. (About an inch on each side).

Anyways, great to have Avast! back regardless of time.

Sip2, however frustrating yes. It is not (entirely) Avast's fault they got hacked. Could've been a newly released exploit someone found, and avast! didn't know about it yet or something. The captcha you are filling out is too prevent spam bots from coming and spamming the forums. You will most likely need to fill it out until (I think) 25 posts.

The other being? Using something like Geekstogo does? Which would cost thousands a year. Assuming between Guests, Admins/Mods, Registered users. Let's say you have what 450 online at once?

I received avast.com email "AVAST forum offline due to attack" and imediately changed my password for the Forum. But I didn't receive any email from avast informing the recovery of the Forum. Today I accessed to the Forum whether it is recovered or not, and I found my deleted old email account based display name and I logged in with my changed password and could log-in, but the forum prile says "Newbie" and I cannot modify display name.

Now I try to access MyAvast account but it is out of service due to some terrors of the server.
Please kindly advise me how to arrange the matter.  Thank you.

Hello,
We run public test of the forum over the weekend. Users will be notified that the forum is online on Monday.

Old forum logins are no longer used. We do use MyAvast account instead. To gain access to your forum profile you have to login with MyAvast account, that is registered to the e-mail address in the old forum profile.

G'day all - Glad to see we're back!!!!

No problems logging in, after I had reset my password  :P, but then I recalled we had been told this might happen  ::)

@iroc9555: I had the same problem with the system time.  Turns out that the Forum time is not GMT, but somwhere East, so when the default adjustment on a Windows box assumes GMT, it screws.  All I had to do was adjust mine by +6 hours rather than the +8 suggested by Windows, and all was right with the world once more!   ;D

using the same email address at forum and my.avast account is desired state. If you had an account at my.avast.com already - with the same email address as at forum - then those two accounts were bind together. Just login to your my.avast account should allow you to access the forum as well.

PLEASE, note that if you forgot your my.avast password then the Reset password request may end in your SPAM folder...

After being hacked you turn to Simple Machines For a Forum? This is amazing. If Avast cannot maintain a secure forum, why should I trust Avast with my PC? I guess you had to get a free forum my god. I cannot believe this.

The other being? Using something like Geekstogo does? Which would cost thousands a year. Assuming between Guests, Admins/Mods, Registered users. Let's say you have what 450 online at once?

https://www.invisionpower.com/pricing/

There is a more secure free alternative such as MyBB.

My username got replaced with my email address. Can we change it?
Unfortunately not, as the myavast account is based on an email address.
Then is there a way to grant us to hide our Username (not our Display name) as I do not feel comfortable sharing my email address.

If you pay attention you will notice the forums now use a "https" connection.
Whereas before it was a "http" connection. "https" is encrypted which makes using
the forums more secure.

Where do you think this isn't hidden ?

It is only viewable in your Profile settings and only you can see that. Others users that are logged on can view a limited sub-set of the users profile.

My apology. We could view both username and display name in our old setting -- it looks like it is already hidden. Thank you very much for the replies and again my sincere apology.

You're welcome.

I believe this setting is disabled by default > Profile > Account Settings - Email and uncheck the 'Allow users to email me.' If not uncheck this option.

using the same email address at forum and my.avast account is desired state. If you had an account at my.avast.com already - with the same email address as at forum - then those two accounts were bind together. Just login to your my.avast account should allow you to access the forum as well.

I already sent Lukas a PM and agreed to wait it out until Monday. My response is only meant for other users with the same problem.

Both my accounts at my.avast.com and forum.avast.com have the same e-mail address. However, after logging in both accounts were not merged and I got an error message stating that I could not change my name to my old profile.

PLEASE, note that if you forgot your my.avast password then the Reset password request may end in your SPAM folder...

I tried resetting my password several times and those e-mails did not end up in my Junk folder. Unfortunately, they didn't enable me to recover my old profile either...

Apparently I was using another e-mailaddress for this forum. I found out thanks to Lukas. I totally forgot about that! I feel a bit silly now...  :-[ Anyway, I did a password reset and here I am,with my old account.  ::)

That's most likely the case for the rest of the folks having a problem with their account.
Especially those that didn't want to use their regular email address when they signed up for the forum. :)

I found it somewhat confusing but then again perhaps my nearly 79 years old brain is on the wane! I finally did manage to get back my original handle of EXAKTA. Perhaps it would be easier if there were instructions alongside each box you have to enter data in.

Well done to the Avast! Team for getting the forum back up and running beautifully. :-*

Tried to add my Australian Time Zone and Create a 'Signature' in my forum profile page, but could not see any place to do this.
Am I missing something or are these options not available anymore?

Good to see forum back.   8)  Comodo Dragon browser dinnae show full green padlock certificate symbol (does this even for Google Search these days!), only yellow triangle on padlock, but not sure wot real diff this means...

Anyhow, life's back to normal.  And Avast Online Security stopped redirecting me automatically to its own page on every browser start!  All good.   ;D

Hello,
We run public test of the forum over the weekend. Users will be notified that the forum is online on Monday.

Old forum logins are no longer used. We do use MyAvast account instead. To gain access to your forum profile you have to login with MyAvast account, that is registered to the e-mail address in the old forum profile.

I'm glad to inform that I received today the email from AVAST Customer Service notifying "Welcome back to the AVAST forum". According to the instrution to start using the new AVAST forum creating a new password at link in the same email text, I could enter the forum under my old user name and profile pages, too.  Just I need now to delete this "Newbie" profile account because I cannot transfer to my old account.

Thanks & regards,
tosna

The forum is a lot faster than before! Gz on bringing it back to life and enhancing it so much! The last website I expected to be compromised was Avast! Forum, but I guess these things happen, just do your best not to let it happen again.

Thanx for protecting me and my Fam! Wish you all the best!

What resolution / dpi ratio are you running?

What sort of fit to screen are you talking about too small, too large ?

I can use the full 1920x1200 of my monitor, just by going maximise of the browser window or the F11 full-screen key and it virtually fills everything, small border.

@Chocholo

Someone forgot to add the Spanish template to the forum account settings. I do not have any problems for it to be in English, but I have had a couple of complains in the Spanish subforum already. It being the third nonEnglish top board it is kind of important to have in the right language.

Thanks.
