Just updated to 10.0.2208. After reboot, Avast did "rebuilt" the NG. It took few minutes, like with the earlier version of 2015. Is this rebuilt normal, and will this happen with all program updates from now on?

Updated through the UI, no problems so far.

Between this build and the new Firefox sub-version (33.0.3) also released today, anyone know if the conflict between FF and HTTPS scanning has finally been resolved, so I can re-enable the latter?

I started a separate thread, but just wanted to mention here for those watching this one that after the update my Windows Defender (in Win 8.1 x64 Media Center Edition) came on.  It's always shut itself off in the past when Avast was on task.  Disabling it manually works around the issue, but it would be nice if that weren't necessary.

Hi, this problem is fixed - no new certificates with duplicate ids will get created. However you need to get rid of the old ones - the easiest way to do this is a clean reinstall.

Don't know what version you are currently at, but the  problem is fixed via vps update for all versions SP0 and SP1. In the same time, even if it wasn't, disabling Https scanning in case you'll ever observe any problems is just one checkbox click away.

And of course, please let us know.
Thanks.

No, as it looks like the same set of options - I don't think it was planned for this SP1 update for avast 2015, but a future program update.

What is "SP1" ? 2015.10.0.2208 ?
The problem just appeared when upgrading to 10.0.2208.
I don't have time for experiments.
Sorry, but had to (temporarily) uninstall Avast.
The problem with VirtualBox in Avast is not the first, and the operability of the VirtualBox is more important to me...

Updated from avastUI on my win7 netbook with the previous release 10.0.2206 - everything appears to have gone well.

Note: This update also appears to have resolved the Hardened Mode Exclusions (on my XP system) in relation to those file paths that were displayed in the old 8.3 file format.

I am sorry to hear that. However, I just tried to reproduce your scenario and doing uninstall and then clean install of both VirtualBox and Avast resolves the issue.

SP1 is 10.0.2208. It is possible, that the issue occurred during the upgrade process from 10.0.2206. Clean install of 10.0.2208 solves the problem.

Just one more question. Did the Avast uninstall resolved the issue with VirtualBox or was it necessary to re-install VirtualBox as well?

Thanks.

OK- now it is the final version and still running comfortably smooth and flawlessly!     8)

Really, after Avast uninstalling (avastclear.exe I tried also) I had to use VB installation recovery.
Avast uses VB-code to implement the Sandbox sevice. Obviously, some of the modules or their registration data (actively used COM-technology) came into conflict with VB-infrastructure. Your developers need to be more careful when "VB is near".
These problems led to the loss of my working time. Various experiments would only aggravate it.
Don't worry, I'll probably be back (maybe tomorrow).  ;)
Thank you. Sorry for my English.

Wow, I am glad I saw this and thank you. I installed premier with license on new laptop with Win 8.1 on it. have had nothing but probs with it and it causes internet explorer to crash every time you try to use it.
I have been using the PAID FOR Avast for several years now. I called in to report the problem because it says Free Support and all they would do was send me a new license file. If I wanted more than that I had to pay 170.00 for that one year one computer support program. They suckered me into that last year but has expired now. So basically you are on your own with these people. Watch Out McAfee!

Updated from the GUI ok. Just 2 small issues for Avast to consider.
1): I had WebRep disabled and the new update, of course, put it back in.
No real big deal, just disable Avast Self Defense and then delete the WebRep
folders (or do it through Add or Remove Features)

2): While I was checking the folders for Avast, I noticed there were a whole
slew of folders from previous installations. Most of these were empty and
did not need to take up space on the computer. The Avast installer should
clean up these not needed folders. They are in the Setup folder and have
oddball looking file names.

Actually what is stupid is people thinking any AV is going to work correctly on a preview test operating system ::) even if some third party AV is functioning on Win10 there is no guarantee you are protected, when Win10 gets to the RC stages you can then expect some compatibility.

We are working on the Windows 10 compatibility, but please bear in mind that Win10 are sill being developed and that AV is much more integrated to the OS than other software.

This is getting really stupid. After few updates Avast still doesn't work on Windows 10 whilst all other antivirus software's do. I can see the sales is going decrease.
Actually what is stupid is people thinking any AV is going to work correctly on a preview test operating system ::) even if some third party AV is functioning on Win10 there is no guarantee you are protected, when Win10 gets to the RC stages you can then expect some compatibility.
I agree 100%...took the words out of my mouth! ;D

I upgraded my avast 2014 internet security suite to the newer 2015 version, and was fine for awhile....until I shut down my computer and restarted it the next day. My brand new computer slowed to a crawl. What normally takes half a second (such as clicking and executing volume control/adjuster) now takes 10 seconds. I made sure it is avast causing the problem by uninstalling, re-installing, and using system restore.  Sure enough, when avast is gone from my computer everything returned to normal, and when I re-installed it, my computer turned to mush. This is a major headache.  I've been using avast for 4 years, and now it looks like I'll need to turn to another antivirus software.

Using System Restore doesn't really properly restore Avast unless you created the restore point while the Self Defense module in Avast was turned off.
The Self Defense module must also be off when you restore that Restore point.
The safest thing to do is to do a clean install of Avast by totally removing it including using the Avast removal tool then re-installing avast.

@bob3160......this is interesting info.
So even if you turn off Self Defense Module in Avast before you select a system restore Avast does not work (ie. come back all in good order) in that system restore process unless the Restore Pt had been taken with this off too ?
Also, on a System Restore besides SDM....I though you need to disable shields as well ?......not 100% sure so wanted to check.
To be honest, I think the subject of Avast and System Restore guidelines may be good subject for one of your videos.

When you installed what "TOOLS" did you install ?
Did you do CUSTOM install and select or de-select items ? http://bob3160.blogspot.com/2014/10/avast-2015.html
If you read many posts NG is one that can consume a lot of resources.
The other is HTTPS scanning (but in 2208 version supposed to be improved).
So, to test out you can go into Avast in your PC's Programs & Features and do a CHANGE and uninstall NG function.
When you reboot go into Avast User Console and in Web Shield Settings uncheck HTTPS scanning.
Those two seem to be the biggest system hit....try without them and see if this makes difference.

There are SO many better experts on this Forum to answer that question.....so hopefully I will not miss-represent...but at a VERY HIGH summary it is a new "virtualization" environment that is implemented in Avast 2015 that allows it to isolate and test potential threats before they get a chance to even be on your PC's native environment......IMHO a great idea. However, this virtualization (ie. NG) takes a lot of resources on a PC....many have been OK, some only at boot time see slow down, some seem to have prolonged issues......but since NG is new and there is really no definitive way to know what else may be causing PC "performance" issues you can only speculate that if a PC was fine before with 2014 and not with 2015 that it is worth a try to uninstall NG component (check mark in TOOLS section of installer) and also HTTPS Scanning (check box in Avast UI in Web Shield Settings) and see if this makes dramatic impact.  Just reading the various posts since 2015 was released these two items seem to be the major contributors to any effects on PC performance. Hope that clarifies.

Hi, folks. I have now updated to the latest version of Avast 2015 (141111) and I've suddenly started having issues with the HTML5 player for Youtube. What I've noticed is that the issue will go away as soon as I disable Avast's Web Shield. Is there a way to stop Avast from obstructing HTML5 without having to disable the Web Shield? Thanks in advance for any replies.

WebShield blocked eicar with https / Firefox.

Your symptoms seem the same since your first post. I've given you my opinion and no one on this Forum is going to be able to tell you for sure what is causing the issue. However, these two items have been known to cause performance issues.....if you do not believe me take the time to do Forum search on "NG" and "HTTPS" and read for yourself.  Ironically you said you re-installed.....too bad you did not try the suggestions.  Again, I'd suggest doing a clean uninstall of Avast 2014, with new install of 2015....see my signature for link. During install I'd do CUSTOM and unclick NG in TOOLS......then on boot go into Web Shield Settings and uncheck HTTPS scanning.  THEN....see how system works.......you can always go back and install NG and re-enable HTTPS......and/or wait for future program updates where things may stabilize more.

Connected through one account does make keeping track of renewal and many other things very easy.

OK I have a problem with this new version of avast free antivirus. First I upgraded from version 2014 to 2015(10.0.2206) without problems and NG folder was present and all components were running, but when I updated to version 2015 SP1(10.0.2208) some files from NG folder were deleted and AvastVboxService stopped working. So I decided to uninstall avast and then reinstall it. But now the NG folder doesn't exist anymore and so doesn't AvastVboxService. Can you tell me is there a solution to this problem? In all 3 cases hardware virtualization was disabled in BIOS (if that makes any difference?). My CPU is AMD Athlon II X3 450 and OS Windows 8.1.

I think the scenario is that if NG is to work (properly) you MUST have HW Virtualization enabled in BIOS.
I am not sure why Avast installs NG if the BIOS HW is disabled but perhaps Avast installer either cannot or does not ID the BIOS setting correctly {I hope this is something they fix}. I can speak from experience when I first installed 2015 on a PC I did not check the BIOS and HW Virt was disabled but NG was checked to install.....and PC had serious performance troubles.
Bottom line......
If you want NG...enable HW Virt in BIOS.
If HW Virt in BIOS is disabled then make sure during install (CUSTOM) to uncheck NG in TOOLS so it is not inadvertantly installed.

Sorry, I didn't mean to give you the impression that I don't believe you. I indeed did a clean uninstall. I refreshed my pc, which not only uninstalled avast, it uninstalled every single software that did not come "stock" with the computer. To add to the woes further, booting the computer up now takes an hour, even without avast. I think avast did more damage than I initially suspected. Something is wrong with the boot-up process.  At this point I am completely dismayed with avast and will not be putting it back on my computer. Seems to make things worse and worse.  Thanks so much for trying to help though, I truly appreciate it.

Theoretically, there is no set limit. In practice the interface is not designed to handle more than a few dozen, searching and sorting will be difficult with many devices.

Thank you thekochs! Indeed, you have to enable HW virtualization in BIOS if you want NG to work and be installed. If you don't have HW virtualization enabled then this newest version of avast won't offer you to install NG in custom or recommended installation.
I've done a fresh install of avast today and can confirm that all components are present and everything works fine now.

Glad to hear things work good now.
Good to know Avast tweaked the installer.........I'll check that out on another one of my PCs that still has V9/2014 on it.  Thx !

It does make things worse in some cases, ive had my share of broken networking and slow boots from not uninstalling from the add remove program, that tool for removing avast isn't very good, when I use it, my networking breaks, mainly all the wan miniports stop working, then the broken network screws up the boot time because its trying to get info from the internet for logging in. Also the windows firewall service hangs which is bad, almost certainly cant log in, just hangs. Doesn't happen all the time, sometimes it uninstalls without issue.

Are you using the normal uninstall function first ??? (add/remove or Programs and Features) Once that's done, reboot and then use the removal tool and follow it's directions.

I've been getting a whole bunch of outgoing connections to different IPs from AvastSvc reported by my firewall. Why so many different IPs? Is this something new? Just wondering ... otherwise nothing unusual. Did an Avast! Free update through the app.

Based on the information given - we can't really answer your question.

Are you aware that the Web Shield is controlled by the main avast service, avastSvc.exe - so traffic being routed through the web shield so that it can subsequently be scanned will also show up as avastSvc.exe.

This is why there is insufficient information to determine what this traffic is about.

A previously fixed bug has regressed in Avast v9.0.2021 and been carried over to v10.0.2208.  It causes data loss and corruption when one saves Word documents to FAT32 volumes.

The bug initially surfaced around v8.0.1483 and was fixed around v9.0.2013.  Details are in https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=96353.

Thanks. It's just that I have never had this somewhat constant stream of out-going connections ever before, and now it seems it never ends, one every five or ten minutes, not looking like it has anything to do with web access through my browser. Here's an example:

I don't think this is directly related to your browser either as it is using TCP not HTTP/S; don't forget that there are many other tasks that the avastSvc.exe handles, accessing cloud service to check file hashes, etc.

I too get similar popups as I also have Outpost Firewall Pro and generally anything for the avastSvc.exe I Allow.

I haven't upgraded to avast 2015 yet ... and don't really plan to do so anytime soon.  I'm having computer problems with both my computers as it is.  I don't want to add problems to the situation by installing a not quite ready avast 2015.

But, that said, for when I eventually get a computer that is problem free ...
In a nutshell, with NG and that https scanning not installed, is avast 2015:
(a)  About equal to
(b)  Slightly better than
(c)  A lot better than
(d)  Inferior to avast 2014?

Well you will be happy to know that NG and HTTPS scanning don't work with XP as the OS doesn't have the required functionality/APIs.

Ahhh, Okay.  That said though, now that XP won't be dealing with those 2 things ... the question, the curiosity is still there.  Which of those 4 choices best describes avast 2015's operation on XP given that NG and https scanning aren't running?  I would think that it would at the very least have to be at least slightly better than avast 2014.  Otherwise there'd be no reason to upgrade from a properly-functioning avast 2014.

Actually, in the past 2 weeks I've been switching back & forth between my Windows XP Dell and my Windows Vista Compaq Presario depending on whether my Dell wants to power up or not.  So I'm guessing IF I ever attempted to install avast 2015 on my Windows Vista computer, I WOULD be prompted as to whether I wanted NG and https scanning installed?  Or does one only get prompted for that if one first does that BIOS setting change?

OK, since the amount of out calls seemed abnormal, I did a complete uninstall/reinstall using avast_clear. Now things are normal - not a single one other than the expected ones during install. My previous install was over the previous version using the update mechanism.

Life is quiet again :)

Well I feel you will still be getting at least the same protection as the old methods of doing things would still be in place.

New elements have been added to avast that still work with XP.

I think that Vista is in the same boat as XP in that it doesn't have the functionality/APIs required for NG and HTTPS scanning. This is easily checked monitor the avast Statistics - Real Time, whilst browsing some https links and see if there are any scans of said https URLs being scanned.

One thing I like about the 2208 is that you can now clear your restore points and it will rebuild the ng, so now you don't have to let it build up waisting space, I only ever usually keep 2 restore points after I clean and check the system/OS.

I did a clean custom install of build 2208 on 2 computers of which neither had virtualization enabled. On one the box for NG was present and checked on the other the box did not even show up to be unchecked. Both appear to running well without NG or HTTPS.

Hi there,

In this new release i have the same (little) problem as in earlier versions:

I have planned a weekly scan and i want a report. So i checked "Generate a report" and filled the path and reportname: C:\Users\Jaap\Documents\Avast\Avast_Wekelijkse_Scan
I checked all options under Reported Items.

However, no report is generated.

What am i doing wrong?

installed kb3000850 yesterday and avast isnt playing nice with it on two machines.. one my main and the other a clean formatted windows 8.1.1, the update that Microsoft released and avast together = bad, the systems wont restart or shutdown unless avast is uninstalled.. top it off it never loads avast completely and certain functions are not available or accessible

warning to everyone do not install kb3000850 unless you know how to work around it if you do then you will see what im talking about, avast basically breaks with the update

Many program updates require a system restart in order for the program to work properly.
Avast isn't any exception. Registry changes require a reboot to take effect. :)

Hi

I just have upgraded Avast from the previous version to latest AVAST 10.0.0.2208 without any problems on my Windows 7 SP1 system.
Everything seems to work fine. But when looking in the event log I noticed several error messages related to VSS (ID 12294, ID 13) , Service Control Manager
( ID 7006) and Microsoft Windows Distributed COM (ID 10016) after every boot. Before Installation I have checked  the Event Log for any errors and warnings and the log was free of any errors/Warnings before for several weeks already.
I deinstalled AVAST 2015 and no error messages showed up in the Windows Event logs anymore after several boots! So AVAST 2015 must have caused the error entries. I did a clean install of AVAST 2015 again but errors were popping up again in the Logs after every boot. I looked in AVAST  (Einstellungen/Fehlerbehandlung) and unchecked  "AVAST Selbstschutz-Funktion deaktivieren". This was just a guess, that the error messages could be caused by this function.
After booting the machine the errors in the log did not show up anymore after several boots. I still have noticed a DNS warning (DNS client Events ID 1014)
"Zeitüberschreitung bei der Namensauflösung für den Namen 254.247.166.194.IN-ADDR.ARPA, nachdem keiner der konfigurierten DNS Server geantwortet hat"

So people upgrading to Avast 2015 should have a look in their Windows  logs if they also notice  error messages/ warnings caused by Avast installation.
Unfortunately disabling   the "Selbstschutz" Funktion  leaves Avast unprotected against Malware.! So I hope that the problem will be fixed by an update
as soon as possible as the error messages also may indicate that Selbstschutz even when enabled may not work as expected.

I have had serious problems with web connections since updating Internet Security
Program version 2015.10.0.2208

I can browse the web but it appears that Facebook or Pinterest browsing is causing me to be disconnected from the web.  Avast also loses connection but I can sometimes continue on a forum but that too fails in time.  I have to keep rebooting to get it all back.  It failed when I tried to post a reply on this forum earlier.

I can still send and receive mail after the failure and use a VPN network but the web is a no go.

I have now repaired Avast and I hope that will do the job.  I will let you know if I have further failures.

Installed the new update and can no longer get email from POP accounts in Outlook unless I disable Avast (everything but spam filter).  Not helpful to need to disable so much that the tool is supposed to provide.  Any suggestions.

I just updated Avast to 2015.10.0.2208 and it looked good, restarted PC, all was good....until I right clicked an exe file to check it's digital signature (Was updating another program, I do this for all files I download).

My PC then hangs, or crashes if I force close the 'non responding window' ..only happens on *.exe files.

I traced it to Avast since that was last thing I updated as well as I right clicked the icon and selected the "Avast Shield Control' to "Disable all until compute is restarted" and then waited 5 second or so, then I right click the same exe file, and it shows up instantly, no troubles before.

Any idea as to why this happened? And how to fix?
*If I need to post this somewhere else, or give you more info, please tell me and I will try my best*

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Forum.
Start by trying a repair. Repair is accessed through the add/remove function (Program and Features) Select Avast,
scroll down if needed and select repair. When that finishes, Reboot your system.
Let us know if that works. If not, do a clean install of Avast. You'll find instruction by following the link in my signature.
Title: Re: AVAST 2015 SP1 (10.0.2208) Causing BSOD (Vista) and System Crash (WIN7)
Post by: REDACTED on December 06, 2014, 11:18:15 AM
Hello.  First time poster to this forum.  I have three older Dell 740 (8 GB RAM, 120 GB SDD) OptiPlex desktop computers.  Two are loaded with Vista Business 64 Bit, one Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit. I upgraded Avast Internet Security on one of the Vista PC's to 2015 and it immediately started the dreaded BSOD.  I rolled back to a previous restore point (which included Avast 2014) and all was well again. Last night I updated the Windows 7 Pro Dell 740.  A few minutes later the PC hard crashed and rebooted itself.  After several of the hard crashes I had to remove Avast 2015 (did not roll back to a previous restore point yet).  After the removal it is functioning OK again.

Are there any other users out there experiencing these issues when installing Avast 2015?  If so, are there any known fixes?  Avast Internet Security 2014 did a fine job ... but now I cannot upgrade to 2015 because of the BSOD/crashing issues.  Thanks!

@ nhsander,
Simply remove avast from the old computer, save your license file.
Install Avast on the new one and use the license file.
You have a license that allows you to use it on 3 computers. (Any 3 computers) :)

To install Avast on a new PC is very easy..

Uninstall Avast from the old PC
Install the correct version of Avast on the new one

Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe)
Avast Pro (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe)
Avast Internet Security (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe)
Avast Premier (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe)

Then copy the licence file that you received in your confirmation e-mail to the new computer and double click it

hi all
After installing free avast 2015 sp1 on all 8 of my systems. 3 crash as soon as open a browser. No matter the browser. Blue screen of death. Uninstalled and did a clean install, even did the avatclean in safemode. Same problem after the reinstall or the clean install. I have done some searching for4 this problem and there seems to be quite a lot of people having the same proble. I can't believe avast have not addressed this problem yet. If I use MSE or avast version 9. There is no problem with browsers. So this must be a version 10 sp1 problem.

I have also seen some say, turn of the the browser shield to solve this problem before avast bring out an update to fix this problem. Not likely, I don't want to browse without security.

Come on avast, get this sorted. You are loosing your good name as being the best.

Thank you for the help and advice,

I tried the repair option, and rebooted, but no change.  I still got the odd hand-up/freezing/CPU use=100% when I right click exe files that last for about 10-15 seconds.

After much trial and error I have found out it is with the 'File System Shield' that is the problem.  Or more directly the packets part. I have ‘scan all packets’ enabled.

I tested this by disabled all packets  and just keep the default selected (Self-extracting DOS executables, Self-extracting Win32 executables, Droppers, and NTFS streams are only enabled)  and have NO problems at all!

I then went threw and enabled one package only and tested the problem.
I found out if I enable ‘Installer Archive’ at any time, I then have my PC freezes/hangs and CPU use is @ 100% for about 15 seconds or so.

Note: This didn’t happen in the old version, before I updated Avast to v2015.10.0.2208 that it is at now, I don’t know what was changed, but I’d like to know how to fix this permanently.

Thanks again!

1st I updated. Then after blue screen of death, I tried the repair without success. Then I uninstalled in the normal way reinstalled but the same problem was there again. So I did a uninstall using avast's removal tool in safe mode. But again after a clean install, the problem was the same. And to note, all systems were rebooted after each uninstall and install.

I have also done a search and found I am not the only one with this same problem.
a note about my systems. there all have different hardware in so I think we can rule out a hardware problem.

I have around 60 clients who all have avast free installed, but all have been told by me not to update until I sort this problem out. If there is no fix very soon, I will be removing avast from all clients system and using an antivirus that does not blue screen a system.

After installing 10.0.2208 Avast Pro Antivirus under Win 8.1 64 bit, my custom scan no longer showed up in the pick list of scans to run.

So I re-made it. It scans all drives, then shuts down.

At least, that's what it USED to do. That's what it's SUPPOSED to do.

But now it doesn't even launch.

Anyone else having this problem? (and yes, the "schedule this scan" box is checked)

I urge you all to check your account if you have automatic renewal.  Nowhere on the account screen is there access to your credit card or options for discontinuing.  I cancelled my subscription to avast in October because I knew my renewal was coming due.  They went ahead and renewed it in November.  Unless I cancel my credit card, they will probably do it again next year.
The response to my complaint?  You could put avast on a different machine.
Beware.

There are options to change the auto renewal prior to it happening. I't posted in this thread.
No allowing it in the first place is always the easiest way to prevent it in the first place.

Did anyone else noticed big connection delays while browsing after the latest update?

The browser is spinning "Looking up..." - it takes sometimes 3-20 seconds. It seems very random, it comes up sometimes with my local news sites, but most of the time it slows down Google services, like GMail (like it takes 10 seconds to log out) and YouTube (thumbs not loading) or embedded videos won't show up, I even saw delay with "Looking up fonts.googleapis.com". Sometimes it even says it completely can't load a site, then after 3-4 refreshes it just pops in.

EDIT: It seems it is rather "Waiting for..." than "Looking up"

To Avast team and developers,

Since the release of Avast 2015 the automatic VPS update notification has been discontinued by you in which I don't have anything against it. It was your choice and as always continue to make a better product and you all are sure that's it's good business :). Reasons that I am writing this is that as of late users continue to write in this forum about why avast not showing the VPS update notification too many times and we have to tell them that it's has been discontinued. Even though that setting shows up in the Avast settings menu and users will get confused even though the settings are correct and why isn't it working!

In the next Avast 2015 update possibly SP2 (if it will be released) or Avast 2016 it will be very appreciated if you could totally remove the settings that are related to VPS update notification! Thanks.

Keep up the good work you are doing  :)

Isn't it this one. Automatic update when VPS update happens when the VPS update notification comes up! Setting under voice over like vps update happens and a female voice occurs

@bob3160 and schmidthouse: You two need eyeglasses lol.... just kidding. I have a question? How many antivirus (excluding MSE) at present shows a notification that it's malware definitions has been updated? If none of them does, I think avast is following it. Just a thought. I think McAfee and Trend Micro still shows a notification that it's malware definition has been updated.

You might want to do a search for Browser Cleanup.  It has messed up a lot of people's computer's.  Supposedly it has been fixed.  I haven't used it myself.  I went to control panel, right clicked on Avast, clicked change and unchecked Browser Cleanup.

Good on you bob3160  :). I used McAfee, Trend Micro, MSE, Panda Cloud Antivirus Free, Windows Live One Care, Norton, and AVG. Finally I made my final decision to move to Avast when it released it's version 7 and AVG Free on my desktop. AVG Free has also improved just like Avast.

Thanks again to pk and MartinZ  :)

The advice is very simple. You use one or the other not both. Just like your resident AV, you should only use one.

I have also read 'conflicting' direction/information given with regards to the Windows Firewall being compatible with Avast.
Compatibility does not necessarily mean it's recommended to use.
While it  may appear to be free of conflict, I personally agree with Bob that only one firewall is really needed and recommended.

On my systems that have the free version of Avast, I'm using the Windows firewall.
On the system that has Avast Internet Security, I use the Avast firewall. Afterall, I'm paying for it. :)
I've not had any problems with either and both block equally well. The Avast Firewall is more easily configured.

Follow-up to my earlier post (reply #165) about custom scan not launching:
Two days in a row, now, my custom scan has launched. It was scheduled to launch at 22:16 seven days a week. Today it started up at 08:57. Yesterday it started up at 13:08.

Does anybody know why this happens?

After installing 10.0.2208 Avast Pro Antivirus under Win 8.1 64 bit, my custom scan no longer showed up in the pick list of scans to run.

So I re-made it. It scans all drives, then shuts down.
At least, that's what it USED to do. That's what it's SUPPOSED to do.
But now it doesn't even launch.
Anyone else having this problem? (and yes, the "schedule this scan" box is checked)

There appears to me to be some confusion
I'm curious, I see the reference "BUG" being applied here;
when did the "discontinuing" of the vps popup/voice notification which VLK has stated his uncertainty as to whether this iconic voice notification should have been discontinued, become a "BUG"
So my confusion is simply the term BUG as it is my understanding this change was made consciously, not something that just started happening.
As to why the setting wasn't removed is still uncertain.

For me the only bug would be that the settings remained behind after it was decided to remove the auto update notification.

As to any reversal of the decision to remove the unique auto update notification, would I'm sure be very welcome to many avast users.

This is also my understanding. I also know quite a few people who would like a daily reminder that their av is up to date. :)
I've heard very few complaints about the announcement being an annoyance.

@schmidthouse and @DavidR : This is what I sent to pk:

"Just a matter of curiosity about the vps notification update. As of late many users are asking why avast doesn't show the vps update notification after an automatic vps update even though on the avast settings this function is checked but the function doesn't work when there is an automatic update. I was thinking to make an suggestion/feedback about this via avast support ticket but preferred to PM via avast forum.

As I was saying please refer to this section of the forum https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=159528.165 and read my reply #172 and reply#174"

This is what pk replied back to me:

"Thanks for your feedback. I'm forwarding this email to MartinZ, who is responsible for the product usability - if it doesn't work as you describe, he'll find out who changed this behavior and forward him this email".

And this is what MartinZ replied back to me:

"thank you for your feedback. Yes there is bug in the settings and the checkbox will be removed in next version to avoid confusion. We removed the VPS notifications in last version for various reasons:
1. it wasn't precise - avast client is getting around 150-200 updates a day (it's a historic relict, in past it was really just twice a day)
2. some users complaint about being notified few times a day, both visually and sound
3. we believe that to be up to date is a core functionality of AV and doesn't need user's attention - so we rather warn the user when the database is outdated"

I then PMed MartinZ this:

"Thanks for replying back to the vps update notification that pk gave to you via my reporting about the vps update notification bug :). Are we expecting this bug to get fixed as SP2 or Avast 2016. Avast 2016 will be a lovely Christmas present to us all  8)"

he said this back:

"Hi yes, the bug will be fixed in next version due in beginning of 2015.
Merry Christmas."

I've been trying to upgrade Avast Free to Avast Internet Security (Windows 8) through the Avast app, and all I get is window with a loading indicator. The price to buy through the app is considerably less expensive than through the Avast website, so that's why I'm trying to go that route. Is there a known issue? If so, please advise.

Thanks!

Because on my 3 pc I have the same dpc latency bug with NDIS.sys ...
This is the problem with bugged firewall driver.
And how I can recommend it ?

A bit late to the party, but I was having issues with HTTPS sites in Chrome and discovered that the certificate found at AVAST Software\Avast\wscert.der  is valid starting 12/30/2014.  If anyone's turned off HTTPS scanning to solve the problem you will be able to turn it back on as of tomorrow.

Hi avast team,
I joined avast yesterday and are very satisfied.

Just one thing that is wrong in the user interface:
If you have more files in the virus chest that can be displayed on screen a scroll bar is shown. This is right. But if you delete some files from the chest so that all files fit in the window the scroll bar still exists. It redraws only if I try to scroll then it vanishes, which is good.

Could you please check on deleting if all files do fit an if yes just disable the scroll bat.
Thanx.

First time poster, bear with me...  Have been running Avast Free on a Lenovo laptop with Windows 7 SP1 since 2011.  Never had a problem.  Got a notice for the latest update sometime ago but Holidays got in the way and didn't update until yesterday.  Ever since, computer will work OK for ~15-20 minutes then Windows will become completely unresponsive; only action is to turn off and reboot.  I read through this thread, tried Repair, regular Unintall, Avast Clear, no change.  Called Avast Tech Support and they wouldn't touch it, said it was a Windows problem not Avast.  Avast broke my computer!! Now what?

Welcome to the forum. :)
In the Control Panel, click on Program and Features > Select Avast > Select Change >
Scroll down and uncheck NG > When the operation finishes, Reboot your system and see if that solves your problem.

Once I open the CP, select Avast then select Change, the next screen has three columns: Shields (3 products checked, the rest '?'s), Tools (most all checked, else '?'s) and Language (English).  There is no NG box (what does NG stand for?  someone asked earlier in the thread and I never saw an answer).  If I hit Continue, it sets a restore point and says to reboot.  That's it.

I reached out to Incredimail Technical Support and they say the problem is within AVAST and not with them. PLEASE HELP

I've not had a problem with the both co-existing before this last AVAST UPDATE 2015. Please help.

Make sure that Avast Online Security browser add-on isn't blocking your social network.

Hello

These files take up too much space on the system drive.
1. Is it possible to remove them?
2. Is it possible to change the saving path?
3. Is it possible to disable this service NgBase?

Thanks
