I was having a few problems with my laptop so I recently clean and completed reinstalled windows. Some problems still persist so I wanted to upgrade to windows 8.1. However, when the laptop installs windows and restarts it always freezes at 82% and shuts down automatically. When I turn the laptop back on I get the following message: 0xC1900101 - 0x20003
Please help! :'(

Hi singh21,
There's a bit of missing information here:
- Make/model of your laptop
- How you installed the fresh copy of Windows 8
- Are all security updates in place and successfully installed for Windows 8?
- What video drivers are you using?
- What wireless driver and/or NIC (wired) card driver?
If you are already having issues with the clean install of Windows 8 before you upgrade, then these issues are likely to be carried over to 8.1 and are not going to be fixed by upgrading.
Anything reported as incompatible with Windows 8.1? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-assistant-download-online-faq (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-assistant-download-online-faq)
What issues do you now have with Windows 8?
-
laptop is HP ENVY dv7. I did a complete clean of the drive and reinstalled windows 8. prior to that I had windows 8.1. Now I am just trying to get my laptop, which has been restored to factory settings, to windows 8.1
-
Why not just download Win10 direct from Microsoft and skip the 8.1 update.
-
I dont want to pay for the update. Is the update to win10 free?
-
If you have a legitimate copy of Windows it is free http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
-
Surprisingly I was able to update to windows 8.1. Also, do you recommend I update to windows 10? Is that operating system good? Thank you

In my opinion, W 8.1 is a gem!
W10 has some growing to do but being a new OS that's to be expected.
Reading this topic will give you a better understanding. :)

edit: In addition I personally don't like/am very concerned about the lack of 'control'/options in the Windows 10 Update Process.

Type winver.exe in the Run dialog box and press Enter. What do you see?

You must have Windows 8.1 installed in order to upgrade to Windows 10.
-
yes i have win 8.1 installed

The following video helps you get ready to upgrade:

Next step:
- What is needed is to verify you have the Windows 10 setup files downloaded to your system before we can proceed to upgrade to Windows 10. To do that, you will need to change your file/folder settings to show hidden folders and files. See attached below to see what you need to do step by step
- Navigate to your C: drive and look for folders marked '$Windows.~BT' that are approximately 3.23 GB in size If you see them, and you confirm they are that size, then you have successfully downloaded the entire setup file for Windows 10
- Open Control Panel>Click File Explorer Options
- Click View>Click hidden files, folders, and drives
- Also click 'Hide protected operating system files'
- Click Apply
Do you see the folder marked $Windows.~BT?
Please follow bob3160's link to help you out and use this post to confirm all is in place.

"What is needed is to verify you have the Windows 10 setup files downloaded"
Not if you're using the tool Microsoft supplies. The link I posted in my reply leads you to that link. :)

Silly question to ask in the Avast support forum. :)
If we didn't think it was the best, would be here ???

The computer claims 2048*1152 is the most optimal resolution but that doesnt work since the screen starts to shake and is not scaled correctly. Can someone please help find whats the best display settings for my desktop? Thank you all for your help!

I'm here again, sorry. I had restored my laptop back to factory settings since some problems were still persisting. And now, I having the same problem of not being able to update to windows 8.1. I get the message: "Your windows 8.1 install couldn't be completed. Something happened and the install of windows 8.1 can't be completed." I wonder why I always have this problem.
-
Check to see if there are any hidden updates that you need to install.
If you don't find any, then see if this helps you update to Windows 8.1:

Nothing sir, I ran the dowload update and it just said my computer already has the updates downloaded

The other option is to create install media of Windows 8.1 and do the install from that media (Select the option to keep your files and settings):

Ok, I got to windows 8.1 again. I should of mentioned this earlier but the biggest problem I've been having with my laptop is that its disconnects itself from the internet. Also, I get a caution sign on the wifi. I dont think its a problem with the wifi itself since this problem dosent occur with other devices. I woudl really appreciate help on this since it been happening for a while
