Good News
Alice is now #4 on the Transplant list.
(The original Post goes back to the Off- Topic Forum and can be found Here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=12630.0)
By Thursday of this week we'll be leaving for Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.
We will remain there for 3 month after the transplant itself has taken place.
More information at the following website:
http://home.comcast.net/~bob03160/HelpAlice.html
The bad news
The place where we'll be staying, ( Twice Blessed House (http://www.pretransplant.com/Lodging/twiceblessed.htm) ) has no
internet access facilities.
Since I don't have a laptop, at this point, I still haven't figured out how or if I'll be able to do
anything online while we're away.
We are currently waiting for Alice to receive one more infusion of albumin at
our local hospital. They unfortunately ran out last week.
Once that procedure is done, we'll leave home for the 13 hr car trip to Dallas.
-

Very good news, Bob ... my wishes and prayers for the very best! :)
Well, if you have no internet access, we will miss you but will understand fully why you are not here. :)

-
My best wishes and prayers goes out to you Bob and Alice. :)
cheers and a Speedy recovery
-
That is so great for Alice!! You both must be very excited.
Where I live, the public library has many computer terminals available for use. You just leave your driver's licence or library card at the desk and you are good to go for awhile. I'm thinking that there may be a public library near where you will be and that you would at least be able to get on a terminal and post to the forum from there. :)

All the very best wishes for a speedy recovey Alice and Bob
Take care God bless Our prayers will be with you

We're joined together in this journey, praying and hoping.
Hoping you can, soon, post the very best news of you and Alice 8)
-
Just as I said before I will repeat now.... All the best to you and to your wonderful wife Alice ! I wish her speed recovery and I trully hope everything will be just as it was before... if not, at least something very close.
Also, I want my forum friends to pay attention to this link Bob provided:
http://home.comcast.net/~bob03160/HelpAlice.html
So as always, you can see your true friends when some problems starts to hit you. So, I feel free to invite everybody who can help financially to do so and help this wonderful lady and her family. For all those who can't, there is no shame and it is completely and 110% understandable... there are always some other ways to support people in needs. Be a friend and act as one.
Again, let's prove we all are true friends, and we all are one big and wonderful unit... that used to make us different from any other forums out there. You never know when something like this can hit you or someone you love, so be good to others, and others will be good to you. Good is returned with good.
Cheers !

Bob: Judith and I send our prayers and good wishes to you and Alice. We hope all goes well. Keep in touch.

My very best wishes to Alice and you Bob. Fast recovery :) and Good Luck ;D
-
Bob,
I read these words in an old thread and thought it would be good to remind you of them:
God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.
My prayers are with you and Alice.
-
Thanks to all of you who replied to my "Please Help Alice" appeal.
At a time like this, all of the well wishes and prayers
are greatly appreciated and mean more then you'll
probably ever know.
A sincere thanks also to any one who was able to help financially.
I again urge all of you to become organ donors.
I promise it's painless and easy to do and could help so many
who can no longer help themselves.
If this helps to save just one life, then I'll have no regrets for having made this HelpAlice (http://home.comcast.net/~bob03160/HelpAlice.html) appeal.

I have been an organ donor for more than 10 years. It even says so on my drivers license card. My family also knows my desire for this. After I am gone from this world, I hope someone can be helped with what is left.

Hi,
have been watching Avast forum without logging in as I forgot my forum-ID and previous nickname too.
Just re-created one to reply to this topic.
Health is something most of us take for granted, which is understandable. Only if something starts to go wrong you realise this.
All the best! Lots of strenght wished (which I am pretty sure has already been needed)
PS: I am organ donor (by law as in my country you are so by law, unless you explicitly reject. My country sometimes makes good laws)
Best regards,
Anothermack

anothermack,
I fully agree!!!! Wish my country would pass a similar law. ;D
(They do it to allow increases in our elected officials salaries with out having to actually vote for the increase. >:()

Hello Bob,
I hope my little donation will help in some way (I just received a confirmation mail that transfer was successful), and I trully wish our frineds from this forum and many other forums will do the same... if we all unite and if we all are determined in our goals, I am sure we can change this World for better... at least one piece of it... slow, but that's the way... when one builds his house, he needs to do that brick by brick... we have to do the same.
Cheers Bob and THANK YOU for your friendship ! ;)

I hope my little donation will help in some way
I've already answered that one in a more private manner. :) :-* (Kiss is for MaryAnne)
A further update:
Alice is scheduled for one more infusion at our hospital on Tuesday morning.
Once that procedure is done, we'll leave directly from there and should arrive in Dallas on Wed.
She's also moved up one more notch on the list. :)
-
Well, yes... but, private or not, this thread is already public so people should know that things started to roll and I trully hope we all will be of some help there.
Take care

Right now I'm working on a Gateway Mobil AMD Athelon64.
It's going to be my communication lifeline till we get back home.
Thanks to my youngest daughters boss, who bought this unit and is letting
me break it in for him. ;D
Since Gateway has a recovery CD, it will be easy to restore the computer
to it's original condition after we get back.
Unfortunately since this is actually used in for business, they have Panda installed on here. :'( :'(
Not my choice but since I didn't foot the bill, I can't really complain.
More updates as they occur.
-
Not bad for a loaner Bob, probably faster than your desktop system.
-
We are now staying at and ExtendedStay America facility in Dallas.
We had expected to leave Albuquerque at about noon on Tuesday but got delayed till 5:30 cause Alice needed a blood transfusion before they would clear her for the trip.
Her meld score has been upgraded to 20 which puts her back to no. 2 on the list.
I again want to thank my youngest daughters boos for the use of this great laptop. :)
THANKS JW greatly appreciated. :D :D
(No David it's a great machine but the desktop is still faster... ;D)

Good luck Bob :)

Sitting in a motel all day isn't very exciting.
Waiting for one phone call is even worse.
I was never known for my patience but am sure learning to develop some.
I guess I have no choice.
Alice sleeps most of the time. Occasionally she'll open her eyes to watch a little TV.
Recipes greatly accepted.
We have a stove, Microwave but no oven.
Eating out would be nice but price wise quite prohibitive.

Hi Bob,
Wishing you and Alice all the best and good luck.
Mike
-
Right now we are sitting in a room at Baylor Medical Center, Dallas.
We received a call a few hrs ago. Alice right now is the back-up
for the person scheduled to receive a transplant.
If there are medical or other reasons why that person can not receive
receive this liver, it will go to Alice.
This is another one of those times where God is deciding what will happen next.
Alice is calmly watching TV. :)
I'm making and correcting many typing errors.
Even if it doesn't happen today, at least she'll be able to get the dressing on her
new Picc Line changed.
If you believe in prayer, this might be a good time to pray for who ever
the liver recipent will be. :)
-
***
Prayer said, Bob. You know we are all hoping for the best for Alice and you!
***
-
It's now almost 10PM and we're back at the motel.
Guess it wasn't the right liver or the person who was next on the list needed it more. :)
We'll just wait for the next call and try again.
-
I've done an update to her websites:

No more dry runs. No more standy or back up.
We just got the call from Baylor Medical Center Dallas TX.
Alice's transplant is scheduled for 11 PM tonight.
( Happy Easter and thank you Lord )
Further details later from the hospital.
Wi-Fi may not be secure but it's sure nice to have.
Your continued support, prayers, and well wishes are greatly appreciated.

A further update:
Since this is life, we can't always expect things to go exactly as planned.
We've been informed that Alices transplant has been resceduled to
7 Am tomorrow morning.
I guess since this is Easter Sunday, there was probably a delay in obtaining
the organs.
This is going to be a long night but we'll have company in a few hours.
My youngest daughter is flying in from Albuquerque.
-
Since this is life, we can't always expect things to go exactly as planned.
The final goal is what we're praying for Bob... We're following the news, praying and hopping they're the best one possible.
Good your daughters are close to you in this time.

I can't even imagine my life ::)
We have a very close and large family and extended family.

I need them as I need to breath. I can't live alone and without loving and being loved.

Ok Alice is now in the operating room and by now probably asleep.
The Transplant was moved up to 6 am or in a few minutes from now
The procedure should take between 5-6 hrs and then she'll be in recovery for an additional 2-3 hrs.
Her doctor will update us after the actual transplant is completed.
-
Our thoughts are with you and Alice, Bob.
We may be far away but our thoughts are close.
All the very best to you both.
-
Hi everyone,
Here's the latest information:
They finished Alice's transplant at Noon.
It took a total of 6 hours.
We were told that everything went like clockwork.
The doctor that performed the transplant said
"She received a beautiful liver"
It's now 8:30 PM and Alice is still under sedation.
She has opened her eyes a few times but so far,
it seems to only be a reflex action.
We've already been told that this is quite normal since
no two people react the same way to the drugs that are used to keep
keep them sedated during the surgery.
I'll do another update as soon as there is more to report.
-
Hey, that's great news Bob. I am really happy everything went well with the operation. You must have had a long day!
-
Very glad to hear the good news about Alice Bob. I know that she will be alright. That's great to hear. Our prayers are still with you folks. :)
-
Thank you for letting us know Bob. I hope you manage to get some rest soon; it must have been a gruelling week for you.
Our thoughts are still with you all. Give Alice a gentle brikki hug from us when she awakens.

Since it's been fairly hecktic the past few days, I haven't been able to do all of
my updates as beforfe and just received the following e-mail from one of our
in-laws and fellow avast! users:
Bob
I thought Alice was in the Hosp for a Liver not a Virus!!!
The only place I could get my updates from u was AVAST forum --
so all of this was to get rid of a big Virus?
Trust all is ok -
Mahalo nui loa (Thank you very much)
Steve
Here's a part of my reply to him:
Morning Steve and Berniece,
Yes Steve it was a big virus called the "LiverBug" Virus that Alice had
remove and replaced with a back-up that wasn't infected.
Since I've been a member of the avast! forum for quite some time, it was
only proper that I keep them aprised of this infection so that all members canm protect themselves
from this 'virus'
Obviously even avast! which is my Anti Virus program of choice can't protect you from this attack.
This is why Alice had to call in specialized help.
She is starting to make quite a bit of progress.
Last night, she controlled the lights and the TV.
Her mind is starting to clear from the effects of the anistesia.
She was up for breakfeast this morning and they've started to remove quite a few of the IV's.
So far, so good.
Love and miss all you guys.

Just a quick update.
Alice was discharged from the hospital Monday evening.
She had her first clinic visit on Tuesday. She also had her first class on Tuesday.
Hopefully by next Mon. I'll have INTERNET access again. Right now I'm
in the Hospital library on the laptop. Better than nothing but I can't stay long.
Will post a more detailed update as soon as I have a better way to communicate.
The main thing is that Alice is doing well. Recovery is slow but it's been very steady
and all her signs are again looking up. :) :)

Hi Everyone,
I know it's been a while but here's the latest:
Time sure does fly. It's now been a whole month since Alice had her transplant.
It's amazing when you look at a picture taken shortly before transplant and those taken after surgery.
The easiest way to now see both the updates posted in A New Beginning is to go to a brand new FREE service
I've found. It's called protopage and you'll find what I've set up at the following link:
http://www.protopage.com/bob3160
Page One is a current copy of A New Beginning,
Page Two contains pictures of the 19th Annual Transplant Reunion,
Page Three contains some brand new pictures of Alice which where taken about 2 hrs. ago.
-
***
Not sure why but the picture below is all I got at that link. The rest of the page is black just link what you see below.
***
-
Because it's Opera. I guess Protopage prototype is not Opera compatible... well at least not yet. Maybe someone should alarm Protopage developers about this one.
I found some other problems even inside the IE... like this one for example:
If you try to resize that window and make it smaller, this shouldn't happen... oh well... it's prototype I guess, they will work on it. But for sure it looks nice and different.
-
Hi Charley
Like Sasha said it's on opera thing. If you read the review in HighlyRecommended (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=16849.msg177230#msg177230),
I did mention that they recommend FireFox.
(I've post this problem in their forum)
Sasha
That was probably my fault and has already been corrected. :) :)
Your right, it's a fun program to work with and will only get better and become more versitile
as it developes.
-
***
OK ... I thought it might be because I used Opera. No problem. ;)

One day someone's mother died.
And on that clear, cold morning, in the warmth of her bedroom, the
daughter was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more.
No more hugs, no more lucky moments to celebrate together, no more phone
calls just to chat, no more "just one minute."
Sometimes, what we care about the most goes away . . never to return before
we can say good-bye, say "I Love You."

So while we have it . . . it's best we love it . .. and care for it
and fix it when it's broken . and take good care of it when it's sick.
This is true for marriage . and friendships ....
And children with bad report cards; And dogs with bad hips; And wives with bad livers
And aging parents and grandparents.
We keep them because they are worth it, because we cherish them .

Heroes Save Lives
More than 18 people die each day waiting for an organ donor and over 90,720
are on the waiting list. Of these 90,720 people, 10% are from New York
State alone. Each year, more than 6,000 people die in the United States
waiting for organ transplants and every 13 minutes a new name is added to
the national waiting list for organs.
There are mothers, daughters, sons and fathers everywhere waiting for an organ
to continue a normal life. There is only so much the doctors can do.
Are you a registered organ donor?
Signing the back of your Driver’s License is not enough. For more
information or to register immediately visit:

Alice and I are now back home. We have been home since July 8th.
Alice has accomplished quite a few few things in the past few weeks.
We've had our first follow up visit with our own doctor and he was quite surprised when he first saw her. She's not the same person that left here some four month ago.
The doctor was actually elated at the progress she's made in such a short time.
Alice is now back to driving and no longer needs me as her chauffeur.
Alice is also doing the cooking again. I still help with the dishes.....
Tomorrow, she has a luncheon appointment with her bowling teammates and after lunch, she'll attempt bowling again which she's missed for the past 2 years. If all goes well tomorrow, she'll be back on her Mon. and Thur. leagues when they start up again in August.
All I can say is she's a real trooper and I'm extremely grateful for the outcome.
Bob
More updates when ever warranted. For now, we're happy to get on with our lives.

Our final update of this year which has been filled with sadness, laughter happiness and cheer.
Alice and I will celebrate this Holiday Season by remembering the family of Alice's organ donor.
Without their unselfish generosity in their most painstaking hour, Alice might not be here
to celebrate this glorious season.
We will celebrate this Holiday Season by remembering our family with out who's support,
all those anxious hours would have been unbearable.
We will celebrate this Holiday Season by remembering all the wonderful friends we've made on the INTERNET.
Friends we've never meet and most we probably never will meet. Many of you however, have become as real
as our actual family.
It's hard to believe that it's already been eight month since the transplant.
It's truly amazing what a difference it has made.
Her friends and family again have a real person to talk to and laugh with. I again have a companion full of life.
She's back to league bowling twice a week and has competed in her first bowling tournament.
God has truly worked a miracle in our family this year. ( THANK YOU )
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to all of you and a sincere thanks for all the support
and good wishes you've sent us this year.

Hi bob3160,

This isn't really something I had wanted to post but,
Alice is currently a guest at the University of New Mexico Hospital.
Unfortunately she caught a stomach virus on the Sat. before New Years.
Because of the medications she's has to take, she wasn't able to get rid of it as the rest of us have.
Her liver and kidney functions are both very elevated and require attention that I'm not able to give her at home.
Hopefully her stay will only be a short one.

Sorry to know Bob... we'll be here waiting for her to get reestablished.
Waiting? Better hopping and praying don't you think? ;)

You are in my prayers again Bob. Lots of them.
-
Thanks but this is hopefully just a little hickup in the whole scheme of things. ;D

Well - can't hurt anyway. :)

Today is a very special birthday for Alice.
I year ago, Alice received her lifesaving liver transplant.
We'll be leaving on Thursday for Baylor Medical Center for
Alice's first annual post transplant check-up. (Boy what a mouthful...)
It's quite an intense procedure and starts at 6:30 AM and ends sometime
in the late evening.
While we're in Dallas, we'll also be attending the
20th Annual Transplant Reunion which is hosted by Baylor Medical Center
each year. This year it's being celebrated on the 22nd of April.
I'll be posting pictures of the event at:
http://bob3160.blogspot.com
As you can see, some of our friends have already started the celebration
a little early.
-
Hi bob3160,
Congratulations for Alice and you. Enjoy every day of your new life together. Hope there are many more to come. God bless you both!

Great news Bob. Hard to believe its a year already.
Hopefully 12+ hours of testing won't be too grueling on her. Well, it can't be as bad as all she went though before.
-
We've made it back home after having a great time in Dallas.
They've drastically reduced Alice's anti-rejection medicine and the
biopsy of her liver was excellent. Unfortunately we picked up a cold on the last day there.
Right now we're both making Kleenex Tissues (http://www.brooksidepress.org/Products/Military_OBGYN/Textbook/Pregnancy/Kleenex.jpg) very happy. ::)
I've updated the blog with pictures of the reunion and if your interested, you'll find them at:

Bob, I was thinking in you five minutes ago... where is Bob I was asking myself... Every time I do this I think that 'something' could be happening with Alice... Glad that our worries do not have any part of truth 8)

Very glad to read the good news about Alice Bob. That's great.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully within a few days the cold will be history and only
the fond memories of the reunion will remain. :)
-
Welcome home :)
-
Its good to hear that Alice has been able to reduce the anti-rejection drugs, a good sign I think. Now you are back to the warmth of New Mexico, provided it isn't snowing again like in the pictures ;D you should both be rid of the cold.

well,i hope everything goes perfect for her. Best wishes for ur wife and u Bob. .Good luck!!

Alice has asked me to pass along the following important link in the
fight against breast cancer.

As a breast cancer survivor, Alice knows how important early detection can be in surviving this
dreaded disease.
Thanks for your support. :)
By the way, We'll be leaving for Dallas again in about 1 month for Alice's second annual post transplant
checkup.
I'll post more as we get closer. :)

Hi Bob and Alice,
Stay healthy and God bless you both,
Damian

Keep strong Bob.
Keep good Alice.
My prayers are with you both and the daughters.

This is where Alice and I are spending this day.
Alice is back at "14 Roberts" the 14th floor of the Roberts Building
at Baylor University Medical Center.
http://www.baylorhealth.com/
She's in the process of getting her 2nd post transplant evaluation.
It may not be a lot of fun but it's one of the many tools that are used to
ensure her and all their other transplant patients continued good health.
As you can probably tell, I'm very proud of the skills possessed by the
Transplant Surgeons here at Baylor Medical Center.
To learn more about the liver transplant procedure, pleas take a look at the
following website:
http://www.baylorhealth.com/medicalspecialties/transplants/liver/guide.htm
There are currently almost 100,000 people waiting for a transplant in the US alone.
Volunteering as a donor is therefore more important than ever and is as easy as checking
off the donor spot when you get or renew your drivers license.
You'll find answers to any questions you may have concerning your decision to become
an organ donor at the following website:
http://www.organdonor.gov/

Good Luck, My thoughts are with both of you.

Thanks Marc,
The past 2 years have truly been a blessing.
It's taught me that miracles do happen. :)

Earlier this year Alice was entered in a statewide bowling contest.
She was lucky enough to come in 4th in our state of New Mexico and will be
receiving an afgan for her efforts.
What a difference 2 years and one transplant has made.
