Title: Temporarily disable Avast Security
Post by: kgleng on April 26, 2020, 02:27:34 PM
Does anyone has any idea how to temporarily disable Avast Security? Avast Security is blocking my company's VPN access and disabling the access to my company's secure sites, tools, email etc. I do not want have to uninstall it every time I need to log into the company's VPN to do work.

My company has 2 VPNs, one which is a split-tunnel and one full-tunnel. The full-tunnel VPN which is the super secure line works well, but split-tunnel get blocked out.

Thanks.

Have you tried to right click on the Avast system tray icon?

Am not seeing the same menu when I do the right click. Am on version 14.4.

Hello,
the screen shots seem to be from Windows; on Mac there is no "temporarily disable" functionality. You can try to turn off Web Shield and Mail Shield or add exceptions for specific sites.
Kind regards,

My appologies, I didn't realize this was a Mac Problem.  :-[

Tried the mentioned methods, still nothing works. Looks like I won't be continuing my subscription to Avast.  :(

Hi kgleng,
There never was such an option in our Mac AV. There is the option to turn off a particular shield at "Core Shields" page. In your case it would be probably Web Shield. What VPN is causing the trouble, maybe it's possible to fix it?

I've tried turning off, didn't work either.

Hello,
there is one potential source of trouble - Real Site; that component ensures that no DNS injection takes place, but it is possible that in case of some weird network setup it could have an impact. Please try to disable Web Shield/Mail Shield (depending on what problems you have) and Real Site. When these three components are disabled, Avast AV has zero impact on networking.
Kind regards,

Why is this missing from the Mac version?

I need to copy a suspect HTML file into an archive for later analysis, but Avast (reasonably) blocks access to it. But there's no way to temporarily stop it so I can move this thing?

That's pretty lame.

You can go in and turn off file protection. It's more cumbersome than most products, but in the end it does let you accomplish file manipulation.

But why arbitrarily deny such a simple feature to the Mac version?

great question. I'd like to first understand the usecase before copying a functionality from Windows or other products. So far, having a simple "turn off" button is convenient but also dangerous for user who don't know what they are doing. When you turn off the real-time protection and you never run a scan then what's the point of having antivirus? Sure, there may be special cases when that's exactly what you need however then an experienced user can turn off exactly the shields that they need.

tiosancho, would you mind to describe a bit more why you need it?

Sure, happy to. In this case it's as I described above: There are infected files that I needed to send to an antivirus provider (possibly you guys; I don't remember), so I needed to compress them for sending. Or, you may be manipulating files that have a false positive.

It's not a big deal considering that yes, I can just turn off file protection. I don't really have a problem with it at this point.

No idea. Why do you ask? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
