Title: Random split second pop up
Post by: ewkhou on June 30, 2020, 09:57:40 PM
An annoying thing that's been happening to me recently, to the point I made an account here. Not sure what's causing it and google is no help because it brings up results for the regular kinds of "pop-ups". I've been using Avast Free Anti-Virus for years now and recently I discovered this problem for around a couple of days now.

To describe it, it's a small popup window of Avast that appears for a split second in the center of the screen before it immediately closes itself. Since it closes itself so quickly, I wasn't able to determine what kind of message it is. It seems to occur every 2-4 hours and I'm not certain what triggers it to appear. Not even sure if the issue is Avast itself or something else provoking Avast.

Silent mode has no effect as either on or off has the popup occur. I tried updating avast, restarting my computer, using the repair app function in the settings, and repairing via uninstall. Those didn't solve the issue. As of right now, I did an uninstall and reinstall so I'm gonna see if that fixes the issue or not.

Is anyone else also encountering this issue or just me?

I certainly haven't experienced it, much less any idea why it would popup.
Have you made any changes to the default avast settings ?

Whilst it isn't there for long, you could try to do a print screen PrtSc key.  To help you find it quickly you could put a piece of HiViz tape on it.

Yes. This has been happening to me as well for the past couple of weeks. Google has been similarly useless for me. Hopefully someone can give some insight into what's going on.

A Japanese user also reported the same issue.
He successfully took a screenshot of that window, although it shows nothing, just a blank with Avast title on it.

This started happening on my PC yesterday.  It's a window with the title "Avast", but with nothing else written.  It closes after about 1/8 of a second!  I did get an Avast program update yesterday.  I have Avast Premium Security.

I'm sorry for bump, but no answer from staff yet.

I have this issue too, random popup without any information on it, only blank window with Avast UI colors.
I'm using Avast Premium Security 20.6.2420 (build 20.6.5495.588), Windows10 Pro 64bit.

I don't know what's triggers it, I don't change any Avast or Windows setting.

This happen randomly.

I am seeing a white "window", about the same size as Avast UI window, flash on my screen after startup. It seems to occur before the Avast system tray icon appears. It happens so fast, I am unsure if it was an Avast window or not. This has been happening I think since 20.6 version update.

Getting something similar for a while too.
Current version is Premium Security 20.7.2425 (build 20.7.5568.595).

It seems to happen randomly regardless of how long my PC has been on and the window is a standard Avast one that appears in the middle of my main monitor before vanishing a split-second later.

Been getting the same popup but I have only seen it doing this while watching YT. It hasn't affected gaming or anything that I have seen but still annoying none the less.

Win10 Pro 64bit updated to 2004 AMD Ryzen 7 2700x
Avast Premium Security all up to date.

Thanks again, Asyn, for the help. He pointed me to this post, which is an exact description of what I'm seeing.

Windows 10 Enterprise (64 bit), version 1803. OS Build 17134.1726
Avast premium security 20.7.2425 (build 20.7.5568.595)

not sure if it's relevant, but I also run AirVPN at all times.

Doing the repair/reboot that was suggested by Asyn in another thread might have resolved this for me. I haven't seen a pop-up so far where normally I would have expected a few.

At least on my side, doing a repair did not affect this.

Hello, sorry for magic windows, when induced, can you please:
1. make a note of exact time, when it appeared
2. copy all files from c:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\ pack them and sent it directly to me petr.blatny@avast.com
thank you again
Petr

After seeing it quite a bit lately, I haven't seen it for a couple days. Nothing on my computer has changed, though as it is just a sudden flash of a popup, it would be possible to miss.

Will be sending logs though when I do see it again.

Happening for a couple of weeks now since I last updated, very very annoying and hard to get work done with the constant popups, problem is identical to what was described by others in this thread.

I've sent logs to the email above, below is specs:

64bit Windows 10 Home 1909 - 18363.1082
Avast Premium 20.7.2425 (build 20.7.5568.596) / Malware Bytes Free 4.2.0

Same here, every time I log into my pc I get that split second blank Avast window popping up. Haven't changed anything that would cause this, I do believe there was a database update I did this past week but that shouldn't affect the program.

I’ve had this since the last update. It last a second or 2 when I’m using my PC.
When I’m away it pops up and stays until I use mouse/keyboard.
I use the free version.
It dawned on me today that I haven’t had any advertisements in the lower
right corner of my PC since the last update.

Having same problem here too since last update, i've had it going on for 2 weeks now, very annoying, and i did not make any changes to my PC at all, i feel like i paid Avast Security for nothing only to get frustrated
No traces of any malware or spyware even after scanning, there must be some kind of glitch or error going on with one of the last updates that caused this kind of issue to happen
Hope the staff can act quickly, it's starting to get on my nerves, i've also made a repair & reboot, didn't fix the problem

Sounds like subliminal advertising.

Speculating?

Sounds like subliminal advertising.
Speculating?

Complete speculation.

Even subliminal advertising has to have a point, something that the mind takes in (remembers and possibly acts on) that is the whole point of it and this has:

1.  Nothing like that, certainly nothing anyone has captured, which kind of defeats the point.
2.  Surely if it were the point then wouldn't everyone be seeing it, I'm certainly seeing it.

Any search on subliminal advertising will return many hits and nothing like this, e.g. where's the bloody message they are trying to convey.

Update: as of now, the pop-up still going on, you might think it's easy to ignore such issue and just try to get used to it, but this pop-up is like a nightmare for me, i've had it randomly appear during a game, and made me screw up several times, i got frustrated that almost made me rage quit, even on a  live stream which made my small audience questions on what's really going on, it was awkward

Another thing that i've noticed, The pop up seems to trigger whenever i am watching a video (on youtube & other vid websites) could this be due to avast monitoring on videos? even though technically if that was the case, the pop-up shouldn't even appear in the first place

We need a screenshot so we can investigate. Without a screenshot, who knows where the pop up is coming from.

@bob. To do that someone would have to rig a high speed video camera in front of their screen. All you see is a breif flash of a white window, which you would never capture using PrtSc manually. Also probably explains why noone has posted a screenshot to-date.

That appears to be not from Avast here's the website, hxxps://thaliana.mydns.jp/avast/ (Changed https to hxxps so it's not selectable)

So have been getting it again, but also have had it act slower which has been more useful.
Slow enough that I can even open up Task Manager to see the PID.

Image of popup: https://i.imgur.com/eGRicsj.png
Image of Avast in Task Manager: https://i.imgur.com/iBMaGso.png

It has a PID of 9344 and it looks like it is related to an attempt to send data through Google Analytics (even though I have all settings that are available related to sharing data disabled).

9344 vanishes once the popup is gone.
Here's a chunk of AvastUI.log that corresponds with both the ID and the timing:

Title: Re: Random split second pop up
Post by: DavidR on September 21, 2020, 06:15:21 PM
We need a screenshot so we can investigate. Without a screenshot, who knows where the pop up is coming from.
@bob. To do that someone would have to rig a high speed video camera in front of their screen. All you see is a breif flash of a white window, which you would never capture using PrtSc manually. Also probably explains why noone has posted a screenshot to-date.
NON (Reply #3) has a screenshot at hand.
That appears to be not from Avast here's the website, hxxps://thaliana.mydns.jp/avast/ (Changed https to hxxps so it's not selectable)
That's his signature. ;) He didn't post it here but it's available on Slack.

OH that's handy, NOT :D

@xSean,
I've reported this to Avast let's see if that helps. Thanks

Alright... so this gets a bit weirder, but the Google Analytics part of this looks separate, though it is still something I'd consider an issue. On that, it looks like after first loading into the desktop, Avast attempts to collect data (and ignoring any user-settings on the matter) to then send off for Google Analytics.

As for the popup, it looks to just be more of a random occurrence, more commonly appearing upon loading into the Desktop, which then made it look like the two events were related as they would appear at a similar time... though I suppose they could still be related in some form.

The popup can also occur just randomly after hours of a PC being on, here's a snippet from the AvastUI.log during such an instance:

Hello again, it's nice to see some progression from others

I managed to have a screenshot of it as well, while i was watching youtube & for some odd reason this time the pop up stayed for around 14 secs, so i couldn't really see what else i could check besides taking a screen:

https://imgur.com/a/PLmIGWH

This pop up also as i have stated previously managed to pop up during my  game sessions, streams, and occasionally pops up when i open an art program like Photoshop or Clip Studio, but due to it been a split second pop up, i couldn't managed to screencap it, but i think it should be clear what's going on with that pop-up behavior, if i managed to get them again, i will try to update with a screenshot

Well, as already outlined by NON, there's nothing much to see - just an empty Avast pop-up.

That screenshot is from Japanese BBS, not mine. Thus I posted it only for Slack, not here (as here is public forum).

For this very reason I didn't repost it here either.

I've been getting the same blank Avast pop-ups for several days now; they look exactly like screenshots above, of just the Avast dialog box (the gray theme) popping up blank and blinking out again after a couple of seconds. I am on the most recent installs of both program and defs, on Windows 10. It's not doing much except being an annoyance, but still.

Update: So not only did i get another empty pop-up, but this time, the main interface of Avast would randomly & forcefully open by itself, sometimes it's as if the program is trying to open by itself

At first i would get random empty pop-ups, then following it after 3 times, the fourth time, it decide to open the program interface (which is the status tab) and it's not empty, it's really frightening behavior & had become a huge distraction as i happened to mess up due to it
but this is the first time i'm getting this behavior just now, and it still doing it several times, just made another report about this

I have been observing the same behaviour for some time now. A couple of days ago, the pop up started staying permanently on my screen and I have to close it now. It also displays the standard status screen with the message "This computer is protected" with the "Run Smart Scan" button below.

Just dropped in to say also getting this, as a paid up premium member, not only the rapid blank popup, but the Full Avast GUI that also randomly pops up and stays is infuriating like other people have said interrupting games, productivity.   I am glad I found this thread and other people have been able to capture it as I have been unsuccesfull so far.

I, too, have been getting this for a while now.
Been ignoring it as it wasn't disruptive to my games or anything.
However, now I'm getting where the GUI opens at random as well, which is disruptive.

I'm just glad to know I'm not alone on these issues as I was getting worried I was either hacked or some virus got through and I was gonna be in for another full reinstall...

Yeah... it does seem to have actually gotten worse.
Before it was just a brief popup, but now it's actually taking focus away.

For anyone wondering what's happening with it now:
1. Blank Avast popup opens and then closes.
2. Normal Avast screen opens (the one where it's open to the Status tab) is now front and center.
3. Now requires that window to be closed as it has taken focus away from whatever you were doing.

Same issue here. Avast randomly pops up, even when I am playing a game in silent mode and it then minimises the game. No reason for it at all.

I do have Spybot installed to check for spyware but it has never interfered with Avast before, I have always used the two together.

Ha HaHa subliminal what ever…
So is anyone else using free and no longer getting adds?
It feels to me like the pop-ups behave like adds did.

But if you don’t get adds because you pay to use
then there’s no connection.

I'm a premium owner and still get ads.
The pop-ups seem to be happening when Avast updates virus definitions.
Weird bug to start happening out of nowhere, but that's technology for ya.

I think you can mitigate the intrusion by just having the window already open in the background.

Another that has been getting random split second pop ups to then change to completely opening the UI on it's own while gaming last night.

At first I got random split second blank pop ups too for months.
This week isn't blank anymore but Avast UI pop ups completely, and it doesn't disappear unless I close it manually.

"Repair" option in Avast setting doesn't works, I still get the pop ups.

Fyi, I don't install another anti virus or anti malware software, and I don't change any setting both Avast and Windows.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the efforts to you guys & the avast team, i can confirm that my problem is finally fixed, i have not been getting any annoying pop-up for 2 days, so the problems seems to have been fixed, if anyone still encounters the problem, you might have to restart your PC to take effect after the update

PS:  FYI, for the issue i encountered, i did try to leave avast window open but minimized, but that didn't work as it kept popping up, i am premium user too, none the less glad to get this fixed, hope it's solved it for everyone too
