NEW Avast Version 21.9 (October 2021)
Hi, all. Please welcome the newest version of Avast AV: 21.9 (21.9.2493)
Major public announcement:
- Stronger Web Shield You're now better protected from malicious websites thanks to our scanning improvements.
- Better Windows 11 compatibility You're protected on the newest version of Windows, too.
- Improved Passive Mode When you turn on Passive Mode, our tray icon now changes colors to show this. And now even Webcam Shield and Password Protection features will also be disabled.
Other notable improvements in the release:
- Apps with similar protocol to HTTP no longer have conflicts with WebShield
- Remote Access Shield dialogue memory issue resolved
- Uninstall Survey - we've added an improved flow for the uninstall survey which will be enabled with this new release
- Firewall improvements - only visible to a small number of users, nevertheless, we've added some improvements, including better notifications
As usual a big thanks goes to the team for yet another successful release!

Thanks, spreading the news. :)

The download for Free: -https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe triggers Firefox's not HTTPS connection on the redirect to the actual download as it is an http connection. See attached image.
Not great impression for a Security Based company, I reported this on the last program update but it is still the same.

Thanks for the new release :)

Yeah... That's strange why all the offline files are provided via HTTP.
-
Is there a download link for Avast One? Thanks.
-
thanks for this release , installed it this morning ( avast one ) update went smooth , but opening the gui and loading it fully takes some time and the " white screen " is there , just like the other avast products.
-
Hi, After the update 21.9 the firewall icon has completely disappeared on free avast. The antivirus tells me it's not install. on adding components the firewall option is missing ...

where the firewall feature for free users hasn't appeared even though it says it's available at the end of October
while I'm already using the latest UI, don't tell me that the firewall is still locked for general users overall ? >:(

it was already the case last week when I wanted to download version 21.8.... It's a bit strange as security for a link from a company like avast

Hi, no idea why it got removed from your system. Anyway, if you need it urgently, you could switch to beta-channel, it should be available there.
Edit: How did you update to 21.9..?
-
hi, from the parameters update the program
-
Please pardon me but I can't find the place to post that since the update this morning I am not able to load one of my games in my Brave browser. I think I know what I did...I chose "yes" on an option but I have no idea how to get back there...it was while addressing the "Global Privacy"options.
I really need the help or if not here can you please point me in the right direction?
Your time and consideration will be appreciated. :)

After installing it on Windows 10 laptop Youtube started bombarding me with ads even though I have AdGuard browser extension ad blocker in Firefox. This never happened before, like it somehow made adblocker ineffective. Hm.
-
I want to ask for certainty about when the firewall feature is by default in avast free without the need to be a beta user, because it is scheduled for the end of October all users can use it or will it be given at the end of this year ?
-
hi, from the parameters update the program
Beats me, wait for one of the devs...
-
I hope that the new firewall feature will not be turned on without explicit action by the user. I support distant non-tech users and may not be able to reach all of them if the firewall suddenly springs to life.
-
The Free Firewall needs to have the ability to let users manually add programs into it to create rules. Otherwise, it would be worse than Windows Firewall. The last time I checked the free firewall, it didn't have the option. Hopefully in the final version we'll have it.

Hi, I can't comment on AdGuard, but (JFTR) no issues witch uBlock Origin here.

Firewall appears to need to be manually enabled. No surprises for the user.
-
yes, the firewall should be added automatically, especially since it's already November, which means the feature should already be there, the avast team should fix it again. The estimated time for launching the firewall should just say this December because the number of users is more than 435 million worldwide so that the distribution of the feature is complete. in that month, users will want to understand, don't say at the end of October all users have got a firewall, finally they complain because until now they haven't got this feature

<snip>
I don't believe it should be enabled automatically or by default.
1. People might be using a 3rd party firewall.
2. Since the Windows Defender Firewall is the default firewall, it might be the users preference/choice.
-
I have a hardware firewall and don't think I need a software one; although since it's easiest, I don't mind letting the Windows firewall be enabled.

Hi
Just updated to the new Ultimate bundle on my laptop which included Avast Premium Security V21.9. Now I can't access any websites and get this message (even got it trying to access the avast forum!)
This site can’t be reachedThe webpage at https://everquest.allakhazam.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT
Had to disable shields to even get here to post this!
-
Hi,
Do you get this message only with chrome or with other browsers?
Do you have an Alienware laptop with a speed optimization application or a Killer network card?
A link to the "ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT" error you are experiencing:
https://appuals.com/fix-err_ssl_bad_record_mac_alert/
For me method 1 is not really a solution since it prevents your antivirus from SSL scanning and just turns a blind eye to this type of connection :-[
Had to disable shields to even get here to post this!
By the way I suppose that in your case rather than disabling all shields .... only disabling SSL scanning in the web shield should solve your problem?
The problem may be elsewhere, try the other methods proposed first.

Thanks for reporting that. Could you please try it now? Should be resolved. Thanks a lot.

Its working correctly now, not triggering the Firefox's not HTTPS connection warning, going directly to the download link.

Since the update, my web pages will note load unless you hit refresh over & over. This is regardless of Edge, Chrome , or Avast Secure as the browser. This is not an issue with my internet or of me making a change in something. I turned my computer on one morning; Avast had the notice it had updated; and then all web pages started having issues.

What about 21.9 (21.9.2494) yesterday update ?

Hi,
What about 21.9 (21.9.2494) yesterday update ?
21.9.2494 was a beta version released yesterday. If you're not on beta channel and still get this, .2494 may be pushed into release channel now.

the same here, .. yesterday notification of new version, but I am not in beta channel

Such a minor thing a 0.0.0001 increment very minor bug fix - Fixed an issue with missing translation during installation (tested in beta first). This
would probably get updated in the Engine and Virus definitions update with no user input required.

You probably remember that I don't like behind-the-scenes program updates (which are known to happen even with the manual-update setting which I have). In this case the update control screen flagged the program as being behind, but the pending update was NOT applied until I hit ye olde "CHECK FOR UPDATES" button. That led to me try downloading the offline installer and seeing that the installer had been changed from 21.9.6675.0 to 21.9.6698.0 which meant it had been updated. That further meant I could have avoided "CHECK FOR UPDATES," downloaded the installer and updated Avast per my preferences (Internet off during the update) instead.

-
Apart from Free Firewall, are you going to bring any new feature to protect users in the near future? In addition, I hope that the Avast teams should consider removing extra apps in Avast Free Antivirus like Avast SecureLine, Avast Driver Updater, Avast Cleanup, etc because they are definitely not free, no need to include them in the Avast Free installers.

I'm afraid I don't remember that you don't like behind-the-scenes program updates and I too have my Program Updates set to Manual. One difference here is that I'm still on 21.8.2487 (build 21.8.6586.697) as I usually wait for things to stabilise and that hasn't updated behind the scenes. So I'm usually a 00.1 increment behind.
I don't know why they did it this way in this case (e.g. having a beta release for such a small increment) as opposed to the Engine and Virus definitions update, that can deal with minor bug fixes. This does happen and the 'current' off-line installation file would also be updated behind the scenes, User Interface updates also happen this way and they to would be updated behind the scenes.
Then there is the Emergency Update function for more serious/critical bug fixes, which would also be included in the 'current' off-line installation file.
This behind the scenes update 'current' off-line installation file, is no doubt because avast doesn't offer old builds for download, only the 'current' version.

I thought I heard avast say that there would only be one engine update (roughly) every month.
And for issues (which avast solved quite quickly) that are far more annoying than a translation issue during installation, they make us wait a month for the next update.... I don't understand why this time we got 2 updates in a week ...for so little

I don't think an 'Engine' Update is what you are talking about, I believe it is the 'Program' Update that are roughly on a monthly basis (or more like 10 a year). 'Engine' and virus definitions update happen frequently. But for the most part these will only contain virus definition updates.
Engine updates are generally user to resolve bugs/issues, etc.
-
Yes, it's the program updates I'm talking about, sorry for my mistake, it doesn't explain why we had 2 in 1 week. At this rate we're going to exceed 10/year ;D
edit:Glad that users who are not on the beta channel have been informed by other of the release notes because here, there is no edition of the 1st post :-\

Whilst this is technically a program update as it went through a whole day in beta (why that was felt necessary is beyond me)
As I don't know why a - Such a minor 0.0.0001 increment would require it, other than to see if the Translation issue was resolved - Fixed an issue with missing translation during installation (tested in beta first).
As I mentioned - This would probably/ordinarily get updated in the Engine and Virus definitions update with no user input required. Or even if related to translation, a UI update.
It just seems very strange to me why they decided to go down this route, and cause this amount of fuss because of it.
-
Absolutely, I was already a bit surprised when I asked the question (#31) and I am even more surprised now that I read the beta notes ("for so little").
It may be just a routing error on the update servers, but we don't know since avast didn't communicate. ???
-

Hi Chris, no errors involved, it has been released to stable channel on purpose.
-
on purpose but without the communication there is every time (unless you have one?).
Users never had to go fishing for information on the beta channel notes.
That's what's strange besides the change in regularity.
While a little explanation (it's been 4 days since the release) would help to move on.

1. Yep, I asked about it on Slack and got a confirmation. Btw, feel free to join us there. ;)
2. Agreed.

However, the screen that appears after restarting the PC following the version update is nice. It is a screen with the details of the update that has taken place, but the flag is active on Avast Secure Browser and if I know click ok (as most users would do) Avast Secure Browser is installed. A little trap to get Avast Secure Browser installed even if the user doesn't want it. Remember to always click on the X and not on OK or first remove the flag. What a laugh these techniques to install other products that not all users would like. ;D ;D

I didn't X my way out of that, I just clicked the Got It button, which just displayed the normal UI and I haven't got ASB. I can't even recall if I even tried it being a chromium based browser.

My sister, after turning on the PC, displayed an Avast screen (she does not remember exactly what it was, but certainly after the automatic Avast update) and clicked on OK as everyone would do not realizing that in small there was the flag already set that allowed Avast Secure Browser to be installed. She obviously found herself with ASB installed which I had to uninstall. So why is this done? If you want it, look for it and install it, otherwise it is not good to put a checkbox by default that prompts you to install the Avast browser to inexperienced or inattentive users ...

Your computer jour choice. I like to keep my protection as up to date as possible.
I do a clean install only if there's a problem. To each their own.
-

What's stopping you from doing a clean installation this time? it's not because there are 2 versions 21.9 that it's different.
Whether it is the "online" or "offline" version, the last version to be installed is 21.9.94, the signatures are different and the date is 2/11 for one and 26/10 for the other

isn't it also a time consuming for those who answered you ;)
especially when the subject has already been mentioned on this post by "NON" #32
edit:In my opinion, if there have been 2 updates in succession, with the only change (see the notes of the beta version 21.9.2494 build 21.9.6698)
What was fixed
Fixed an issue with missing translation during installation
it may be that this translation problem is more annoying than it seems .... not for those who update but for those who make their first installation of the antivirus .... with essential (missing) things to read (license for example) ???

I installed Avast Free a few days ago on a PC and I also had the firewall active.
I had to uninstall it and have it reinstalled today always on the same PC and now I don't see the active firewall anymore, but it is with the padlock for the premium version.
So the firewall in the free version is it in a lucky and random way?
-
Can you not pick and choose what you want to install anymore?
-
Can you not pick and choose what you want to install anymore?
You can still do a custom install, that would require you to download the full off-line installation file.
That said, an update from program update (Manual or Auto) should still retain what components that you have and not install others you haven't already installed. Which is what I normally do and no unwanted/requested components.
If you are basing your comment on the post above yours by 'Nunzio77' who is talking about the new firewall (for avast free), that is still a very limited release. Most want it (personally I'm in two minds to have it or not) and can't get it as it isn't widely available.
-
Let me explain better, if I have not been clear.
I had to uninstall Avast Free on my PC for another reason.
When I reinstalled it (the firewall is not among the components to choose) I no longer have the firewall available (it is only available for the premium version).
So I wonder if when you install Avast Free the firewall installation happens randomly?

Currently, the free version doesn't have a firewall unless you
install Avast One Essential. It comes with a basic firewall.

I installed Avast Free and the firewall was up and running.

I understood that from your previous post.
Basically you were luck to have got it in the first place it isn't on a wide distribution. Why you uninstalled it I have no idea, Avast doesn't retain data of your settings, components, etc. when you uninstalled avast free. So you are effectively starting from scratch again and didn't get lucky this time around.

Can I not have the Firewall installed, I had to uninstall it because I already have Comodo and know running 2 firewalls is a bad idea. I tried to uninstall it but the customize option was gone and I could only uninstall it. Any difference between Avast One Essential and Free?

Yes. During last 2 monthes. Avast was updated on Friday 19 Nov. Everything was ok/ But on Sat 20 after PC reboot firewall was blocked in Avast UI. Process is running. System (Win 8.1 64) shows that Avast FW is working. Repair does not help.
Hi,
Can you please provide us with a support file ID? https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Submit-support-file
Can you also add screenshots of the firewall in Avast and system?

Hi! Today I have successfully deinstalled Avast Firewall. One week ago when problem with firewall was started I could not delite it. Now I can not see firewall
in the Avast component list, process is not running and Windows firewall works again.
I do not understand this game with firewall from Avast. It looks like Avast gave this feature, but after 2 monthes decide to take it back. At the same time, it was done incorrectly with problems described earlier and some mistakes in system logs (in AFD and RegBackup parts).

Hi,
We would need a support file to help determine why it is no longer available for you.

I am sorry for the confusion about a firewall presence in Avast Free. The reason why FW appeared in some free versions (21.8 and 21.9) is quite simple though - we needed to make sure that everything works flawlessly and FW will be accepted by users in their free editions. That is why we released the new firewall for a small amount of free users earlier and collected some feedback. Now, from 21.10 on, the FW will be available for download in the UI for all the free users. Premium users will have an extra tab with advanced features compared to the free version. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=308695.0
