The update has now been officially released as v4.8.1227.
Thanks to everyone who helped testing.
Hi *,
here I'm again. While the next scheduled avast 4.x program update is still approximately a month ahead, we already have a (sort of) stable (although pre-release) build that has some of the new stuff implemented, and would be glad if you could give it a try.
How to install it (provided you have a previous version of avast Home/Pro already installed):
1. NEW! go to avast settings, and on the Troubleshooting page, disable the avast self-defense module (this is NECESSARY for the update to complete successfully)
2. download and run the following program: link removed
3. after it completes, re-enable self-defense module (disabled in step 1.)
That's about all it takes.
This build is supposed to solve all issues of the official 4.8.1201 build (the bug in SMTP alerts, the rare (but fatal) condition that may be causing a blue-screen on Vista machines, intermittent hangs on Outlook startup etc). New features include many improvements in the unpacker engine and other optimizations (performance optimizations etc).
Any comments on this release are welcome and appreciated!
Edit 07/07/2008: the beta has now been updated to v4.8.1218.
Thanks
Vlk

Hi Vlk,
all seems to be ok, no problems at all on the new beta.
Thanks for good work.
Tevion
Edit: Outlook Plug-In was disabled by Outlook; no more functionality ???
-
I must learn to read the instructions, didn't disable the self-defence module :-[
Now I've just got to wait for the dreaded dial-up to complete.
-
So far no problems. :)
1216 seems to startup quicker than 1201. :)
XP SP3
-
So far no problems. :)
Working just fine here also
XP SP2
-
Now i have hard problems with outlook plug-in AND pdf plug-in.
I had to disable this plug-ins to get open my outlook 2007.
Where is the improvement?
Never before i have had this kind of bugs ???
Tevion
EDIT: There is an translation of the first fatal error (sorry for the bad translation)
Fatal error in the Outlook Avast! 4-add-in.
If this error message was displayed on several occasions, you should deactivate this
Add-in and check off whether an update is available.
Would you like to deactivate this ad-in?
And of course it`s a beta i hope I sound not too angry?
-
A translation might help, a little difficult to translate an image.
Welcome to the world of beta testing.
So far no issues with mine, though I don't use MS Outlook.
-
1216 still doesn't resolve the problem I first reported at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=36543.0
This same behavior also affects the Web Shield (scan files of selected type).
Didn't get around to it yet?

Hi,
I have the same problem in Outlook.
Outlook 2007 kept warning until disabled avast plug-in.
Outlook couldn't find "AavmRpch.dll" in the specified directory.

Yes, this dll seems to be somehow lost through the update to v.1216

Which dll ?
Why don't you show the file name here like me ?
On my machine, PDF files are opened to read without any problem.

Well, do you have that dll in avast! folder or not?
If yes, can you check its size/hash/timestamp, please?
-
Hi Igor,
no, i don`t have ashoutxt.dll in the Avast! Folder.
(at Iso-G: that`s the dll you asked for)
That`s the reason why Outlook 2007 don`t find it.
Only ashOUTXt.dll was found.
Sorry for late answer.

EDIT: this is the bug (it`s in german) - reactivation of add-ins impossible, causes new fatal error, second picture or see

I didn't mean the ashOutXt.dll file (upper/lowercase doesn't matter, it's the same file) - I thought we were talking about the AavmRpch.dll file.
-
Oh, sorry, it`s very confusing - AavmRpch.dll fie is there!

The Mail Scanner has an option to only scan files with the extensions you place on the list. This is on the Web Scanning Tab. I placed EXE,RAR,ZIP,COM in the list and saw that other file extensions were also being scanned. Similar to the Standard Shield problem I reported.

I'd say it works here as expected (and in any case, it's certainly unrelated to Standard Shield).
What exactly did you set up in Web Shield settings? What files did you see being scanned (that should not have been)?
How exactly did you see they're being scanned by the Web Shield?
-
@igor
Emailed it to you, the file and the file info. (AavmRpch.dll)
@Tevion
"ashoutxt.dll" is in "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4" on my machine

Try this site.
http://games.rapidshare.com/games/start/en/
Keep in mind I only specify exe, rar, zip extensions to be scanned, not all files.
Have 'show detail on performed action' checked to see the messages, or just look in the resident report
Also, you might have to click on some of the game images to see the messages I am talking about.
Here's a sampling of what shows up in my report:

Igor,
Have just updated to 4.8.1216
After update AavmRpch.dll is present in folder c:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4
created 2/6/2008 1:39:33 pm, size 20,992 bytes, size on disk 24,576 bytes

Ashoutxt.dll is also in folder c:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast4

-
I see speed improvements being mentioned. Anything in particular or general speed optimization?
-
Only resident protection loading speed, as far as I know.
-
I have a very slow boot, even using Startup Delayer. So, I can't see a huge improvement, at least of first boot. This is the reason to keep this notebook always on or just in sleep mode.
I had no problems opening MS Outlook 2007 (untill now).
-
Great. Gonna try it out now. But is this a beta? It seem like noting change on avast web page.
-
The topic clearly says "pre-release" - so yes, it's a beta.
Maybe slightly different beta this time - it's more like a build where a few bugs have been fixed (OK, it seems that another one, regarding the Outlook plugin, has been introduced) and people might check if it solves their problems - than a soon-to-be-turned-into-official-release version.
There are a few more "bigger" changes coming (followed by another beta(s)) before an official update is released.
-
Sorry just know that Sorry for the question.
-
For me this build does seem to speed my boot, nothing scientific I haven't timed it. A point I should raise is I have the 'Delay loading of avast services after other system services,' not because I have a problem with it, just that the earlier it starts the more it scans slightly slowing boot. I have had this disabled for some time not just in this build.
What is definitely noticeable is the, Web Shield and Internet Mail providers load much more quickly.
-
I don't notice an improvement of speed when booting, but you are right about Web Shield and Internet Mail :)
Btw. I had no problems with the previous build, and didn't notice any with this test-build so far ;)
Greetz, Red.
-
I have to believe on you... I can't see speed improvements in WebShield and mail scanning.
There are a few more "bigger" changes coming (followed by another beta(s)) before an official update is released.
Which are they? We're curious ;D

Here's another cat that that would like to know what these might be ;D
-
Well, it's mostly internal changes (some of them in preparation of the features/changes to come soon, possibly through a VPS update). So, you might not really see anything different "visually" (actually, let's hope you won't, because it's maily resident protection detection improvements, as far as I remember).

I can imagine... Is Trojan-Gen anything that sounds in your ears? ;)

Erm... no, not at all.

So, my fault, or, better, my imagination ;)
-
Wow, i nearly missed testing this version! ;)
but now i also updated to the actual beta and also recognized the bug already noticed:
when i try to start outlook 2007 after the restart of the computer with the update installed a message appears which says that the file "AavmRpch.dll" is missing and outlook has to be closed...
when i again try to start outlook 2007 another message appears which tells that there is a problem with the Avast! plugin - Outlook asks for a restart of itself --> outlook closes and opens again with no problems, but with the following add-in disabled: "avast! 4 (ashoutxt.dll)
didn't notice any other problems...

I had this some time ago with another beta for some reason it didn't take first time and that was pre avast self-defence module and I had to run the install again.
Glad you got it in the end.
-
That's right, I don't think it has been addressed yet.
Is this still the case?
Can anyone please confirm if the dreaded MS Outlook plugin problem with the latest pre-release if it's been fixed yet? I'm not asking for a quick fix, it's just that I would like to go for the beta, but as I use MS Outlook 2000, I am not sure if it will cause problems opening emails or not.
-

No problems here with Vista and MS Outlook 2007 and avast.

The problem with the Outlook plugin has already been identified. A beta refresh should be released soon.

Thanks, how will I be notified of this? and where in the forum will the notification be.
Also are you saying in my situation I should wait till this Beta refresh you talk about?

Thanks, how will I be notified of this? and where in the forum will the notification be.
Most probably here.
Also are you saying in my situation I should wait till this Beta refresh you talk about?
I think so. You need to join the beta to receive the 'beta refresh' (or update), otherwise, you'll need to wait the final release of the new version and upgrade the program itself.
-
Dear Tech,
I think I will wait till either I see a notification on the beta, then I will use the beta file to join, or as you say wait till the final then I can update the program, does this sound correct and feasible?
As I see no point in joining the Beta when the problem is'nt fixed yet.
-

Sure.

Sure.
Just one other thing Tech,
When I do want to join, all I need to do is click on the Beta file, is that right?
The aswbeta.exe file I mean, and this will change my version 1201 into the Beta?

Yes. It will download and install the beta version. Read Vlk's instructions.
When the beta finishes, you just update the program and you'll be back to the official release.
-
That's great, looking forward to it, as I say I will wait till I see it's been fixed, or perhaps trust the fix has worked, and wait till the final.

I'm looking forward to the next release.

The plugin is not starting... Of course I have MS Outlook 2007 opened... my email is not being scanned >:(
I hate not to have a warning that something is not running...
-
I'm not being able to send anything from Chest, using SMTP or IMAP.
I've disabled both Outlook plugin and Internet Mail provider.
I've tried two pop3 configurations, one of them from GMail and other a non-SSL mail.
The message says the email was sent.
I've look into Outlook and receive a return message that the email was not delivered to virus (at) avast.com.
Why?
-
The scanning progress in not working anymore on beta... :(

Enhanced interface. Disk scanning with all archive being processed.

Scanning of the whole disk?

The program will try to email 1 selected file(s) from the Chest to ALWIL Software
The following file has been sent by email:

Action was completed successfully!
But I receive a mail saying the message could be received by virus (at) avast.com.
-
Same experience as Tech but with Outlook 2003 and Win XP SP3 ... the avast Outlook provider is not starting ... no avast splash screen and the provider continues to say "waiting for subsystem to start".
With avast Home and scanning "all local disks", thorough scan with (or without) archives is showing an increasing progress percentage for me.
-
My outlook is screwed too, though the AavmRpch.dll file is very much physically present. :'(
-
We will just have to wait on a fix of which I am sure the team at Avast are working on.
I am sticking with the 4.8.1201 non beta for the time being.

Today's update to version 4.8.1218 seem to work just fine so far. :)

Installed the latest beta update.
No change at all from my last report on Outlook 2003 with Windows XP SP3 ... in other words ... still not working.
Please advise if there is further assistance I can provide.
-
Alan, sounds like the provider (plugin) is disabled by Outlook.
Isn't it listed in Outlook About -> Disabled Items dialog? (BTW that's an obvious place to look for this stuff, isn't it? ;))
-
Vlk,
Would you say it is now safe to go and try this beta now that the Microsoft Outlook plugin has been fixed?
Also, I use Microsoft Outlook 2000, and I am unable to disable the self defense module, should this be ok when using the beta.exe file?

The Outlook plug-in is being disabled from time to time... What's wrong? How to troubleshoot?
I enable it, close Outlook, then it starts... Next boot, it could be disabled or not...
Maybe something related to shutting down the computer with Outlook opened (running in background)?
-
Everything works great here.
-
Sorry, this message is on the next post, sorry for the duplication.
-
Once you have the Beta installed 4.8.1218 what do I click on for further updates to the beta when I know there is one I mean, Do I click on program updates? or do I click on the beta.exe file each time?
I really want to try this Beta to see if there are any problems, especially to see if the MS Outlook plugin works for 98 S.E
EDIT.
Just installed the Beta 4.8.1218 on Windows 98 S.E
No problems with the MS Outlook plugin as far as I can see.
Scans with no problems either.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Avast Team in fixing the MS Outlook problem so quickly!

Just upgraded to latest beta and suddenly the Uac came on and there seem to be no way to turn it off, I uncheck it in user account, disable in msconfig but it still want to control things, and help is appreciated.
-
Vlk,
You are, as usual, right.
Apologies for my lack of thoroughness and inattention to previous posts. I made the foolish error of assuming that if avast was still checked in the plugins manager of Outlook 2003 then it would not appear in the disabled list. While this seems to me illogical I accept that nothing beats thorough testing and I apologize for my erroneous post.

have anyone experienced BSOD (bluescreen) with Beta 4.8.1218 on windows xp sp3?
I had my first BSOD in years only a few hours after installing Beta 4.8.1218.
I have no idea if avast actually was to blame for this, because the BSOD gave me no information, and did not create any minidumps.
After rebooting all my Maxthon 1.6.3.80 settings were reset which I find bizzarre.
I'm back to Avast 4.8.1201 just to be safe, which have been working flawlessly by the way..
Im only running webshield and standard shield.
-
Are you sure it didn't create even a minidump?
What have you set on the Startup and Recovery page of system settings?
-
fnukyguy,
I haven't had any BSOD ever because of avast!. I'm using all avast! shields except Outlook, I don't have Outlook on my computer.
Look in my sig., I'm using XP SP3 with avast! Beta 4.8.1218. My browser is Opera 9.51.
Maxthon is a IE clone, I don't recommend using IE or any clones of IE. I recommend Opera. Even Firefox is a better choice than IE. Once again, look at my sig.
-
here are the settings for startup and recovery
(http://home.no/funkyguy/minidum.jpg)
my C:\WINDOWS\Minidump folder is empty.
-
fnukyguy, is your pagefile at your boot partition (i.e. %systemroot% partition) ? If not, memory dump is not created.
-
Also, the small memory dump is too small to reveal the problem (sometimes).
-
If Avast didnt cause this BSOD, im pretty sure it was the newest version of Cfosspeed 4.24 build 1420 that caused the bluescreen.
I updated Cfosspeed 5 days ago. If its not Cfosspeed it has to be latest Comodo firewall which I installed 3 weeks ago.
-
I doubt was COMODO FW, and i doubt AVAST too, hehehe.
But a lot of times is an incompatibility btwen programs.
-
well, guess what, I just had a BSOD on my VISTA-laptop too, and I studied the dumpfile...and it said that cfosspeed was to blame...
so for now I think its pretty safe to say that the Avast beta was not the reason for the bsod on my xp sp3 system

First, this has nothing to do with the beta/pre-release (it's only a matter of the virus database), so please don't post about it into this particular thread.
Second, I checked the signature and I don't think there's anything wrong about it; maybe you ran the tool in the other OS and it was swapped from memory into the pagefile, but I wouldn't call it a false alarm (so I don't think anything will be changed about it).

You are correct... I was scanning my vista hard drive ( where I only selected, in this case C drive) but avast continued to scan D drive as well and that is where "virus" was found at above directory....
I don't know how can virus be found in pagefile.sys only.... N00b speaking here

Updated and restarted here.
Waiting for the website to be updated and see the changelog.

Beta builds don't get reported on the web site only regular builds, http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-4-home_pro-revision-history.html (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-4-home_pro-revision-history.html). So you would be waiting a while until the regular program update is released.

So 1227 is a beta release?
-
What was changed in this beta release?
-
I don't think that this is a beta, since I got it with a regular update (I wasn't using the latest beta - I was using 4.8.1201) ;)
-
Well it doesn't look like this is a beta release but a regular release as I'm downloading it now, as on this new system I didn't have the beta installed.
What threw me was reporting this in the beta topic.
-
Updated :D :D :D
-
I was in Beta with 1218, I saw there was an update so I manually clicked on Program update, it then proceeded to download the 1227 version, no problems so far on Windows 98 S.E :)
-
I don't think that this is a beta, since I got it with a regular update (I wasn't using the latest beta - I was using 4.8.1201) ;)
If that is right then the Beta was not out for very long.
