Hi Guys, just want to know about this two free personal firewall...PC Tools Firewall Plus New Version 4.0.0.45 and Webroot Desktop Firewall New Version 5.8! .... please help me to chose one?
thanks in advance
-
used both of them and i prefer pctools(which i am currently using now) over the webroot one......better interface and security :)

Note PC Tools just bought out by Symantec
spit.
Watch this space for future developments in PC Tools products. Although Symantec spit say they will remain independent we will have to see.
-
I just don't trust in Symantec. Period.

David,
Unfortunately there isn't anything we can do about this so, there isn't really anything to worry about. ;D
I also use PCTools Firewall Plus.

You are not alone ;D
@ Bob,
I know which is why the comment watch this space and see what the developments are, it won't effect me as I won't use any Symantec products. I don't use PC Tools firewall but I have recommended it on a number of occasions.
Just letting those who might be interested in PC Tools products of the buy out.

Me either. I'd rather trust McAfee Personal Firewall than Symantec or Norton.
I have McAfee Personal Firewall running with my Avast! antivirus, they make perfect companions:)
-
Symantec owns the Norton name it's the same company.
Hopefully this doesn't turn into one of those fan boy posts of who likes or dislikes what.
If it works and your satisfied with it use it. If it doesn't work for you, find something else.
That goes for any program or operating system. :)
-
Anyway, THAT IS preoccupating that Symantec buys PCTools now. How the world goes and what money do...only God knows! ;)

Hi bob3160,
Not going on about big corps for ye here, but there are some that buy up or out (whatever you like to call it) firms with innovative software and then find a sure way to ruin it down the line. Why they always find a way to drive it downhill from the original workings is hard to say, but that is what it is. Just an example -remember what McAfee did to the SiteAdvisor tool, and some forum members here can come up with another dozen examples of good software that the Molochs mangled after they took it aboard. Money talks over brains apparently, well it is a way to get a brain park and loads of money & give some users a head-ache,

If Symantec buy Alwil Company, bye bye avast for me.
I'll go to ClamAV or even AVG (if it remains free).

I'll go to ClamAV or even AVG (if it remains free).
Only if it gets changed and becomes a system hog like their own AV program.
If it remains the same, who cares who owns it. It's performance that counts not the label it wears.
-
Let's not forget that Symantec has a habit of buying products and then giving them their final exit from this world.
Symantec will not .. now or ever ... give anyone a free product for more than a year or two. It is a get 'em hooked and then charge them for a yearly update outfit and it will always be.

Point is:I'm sure it won't remain the same!! (over time) :o

We all know what happens when a bigger company buys a smaller company. Whatever the product of a smaller company happens to be will become crap or will become too expensive. Big companies do not spend their money buying a smaller company just to give away the products for free. The big companies do not need to build a user base nor notoriety by giving away free products. They must recover the money spent to buy the smaller company. They buy smaller companies because they see a way to make more money than is spent buying the smaller company. It's simple economics.

Yes, but a firewall that isn't being actively developed isn't going to give you as much protection as one that is.
-
Here is a bit of advice from Matousec (http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php) that is over looked:
You should try them (prospective firewalls) yourself and choose the one best for you, the one that you would be happy with, the one you would be able to configure and use everyday.

I just do not trust in Symantec in any way...

Fully agree.

I follow David point of view.

On Vista, keep Vista firewall.
You can configure outbound protection:
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
While providing complete inbound AND outbound protection, by default, the Vista firewall does not contain any rules for controlling of outbound traffic. That is, every program is allowed to go out.
If you decide to define your own rules, make sure to enable
- avast.setup access on port 80 (http)
- ashWebSv.exe access on port 80 (http)
- ashMaiSv.exe access on ports 25 (smtp), 110 (pop3), 143 (imap4)
Configure Vista Firewall to support outbound packet filtering: http://searchwindowssecurity.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid45_gci1247138,00.html
Or use Vista Firewall Control 32-bit: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Vista_Firewall_Control_32-bit_d5578.html

i'm using vista firewall control and its fine....jsut wanted to know if there is any more effective and light at the same time firewall :P

Comodo is the only one option...
Ok, others will suggest Armor Online.
I (myself) do not recommend PCTools anymore...

ye i know why and i wasnt gonna use pc tools either...ye comod is my favourite....but...the ram...grrr vista makes me mad >:(

Yes, anyway, I'll reply to that saying that you can't have light protection. Vista FW is light protection and Comodo3 FW is heavy protection. In terms of protection, you'll sometimes have to sacrifice something. 8)
Heavy protection is sometimes an EXTRA.

ye ure right on that...i used to use comodo FW since version 2....but for a gamer...ram is the most important part of his pc..so i try to find the best protection with the lighter resources...i'm using avast now along with windows fw and spybot search&destroy on demand only...i think i'm ok.. 8)

I still use it and still recommend it. It's working fine.
Why is every one getting excited over nothing ??? Until something changes, it's still the same firewall regardless of who owns it.

I agree with Bob. :)
I stopped using PC Tools fw in v.3 because it kept losing my internet connection. In a thread in this forum Dan said he had the same problem & switched to another fw.
Now I see he is back to using PC Tools fw, so they must have fixed it.
I see no reason not to use PC Tools fw.
I went back to ZA after PC Tools fw v.3. I have tried a great many different fw's. I prefer ZA to any fw. :) I plan on trying only one other fw, it's the one we all are waiting for!!! ;) ;D
I've tried many antiviruses , I prefer avast!. :) I have no interest in trying another av!
-
PCTools FW is great on Vista and for those who already have it I'd say keep it. For those who would think to just install it for the first time, well the News about the fusion with Symantec are disturbing me. Tech also stated a few months ago how difficult it was to completely UNINSTALL PCTools FW from your system and the problems it gave in the installation of COMODO3 (happened to me) by interfering remnants. Then PCTools FW may be easy but it has fairly poor performance in the ratingshttp://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php (http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php) ;D

Tech,
There is one thing I've learned in life:
Always celebrate today. Tomorrow may never come.
Always worry only about the present. The future will take care of itself ( Usually with a little help from the man upstairs :) ).
If you remember, Alice is pretty good proof of that philosophy. :) :) :)

You're fully right about important things in life.
About software, when we can choose, I'd like long life support. It's a choice. I won't support a shareware. I hate when a freeware becomes a shareware. So, I don't like when Symantec buy another software. Just long life support, not a philosophy in my life.
And also, it's hard to me not to preview the near future. I try to live in present, but, sometimes, it's hard to me, costs some effort. Other people are different and other things will cost to them. I can't win this battle against myself. Lucky the ones who already won it.
