Title: The AAVM subsystem detected an RPC error!
Post by: MegaShark on December 25, 2008, 10:54:33 PM
Q: ThereĀ“s a red circle on avast! a-ball icon in system tray and when I click on it, the error message appears saying "the AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error". How to fix this?

A: First, use Windows Update to be sure that all Windows components (including "RPC") is up to date. Then restart your computer and check if the problem persists. If it persists, follow these instructions:

Hi there,

I've tried everything:

Right-click the icon MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE.
In left column unroll SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS.
Click on SERVICES.
In the right column, look at the state of service avast! Antivirus.
If the service isn't set to start automatically, set it that way (right-click it and select PROPERTIES and the STARTUP TYPE set to AUTOMATIC). Restart the computer after making the change.
If it was already set to "Automatic", check the status of the service. If it not "Started", try to start it (right-click it and select START).
If the service cannot be started, your avast! installation might be corrupted. Try repairing the avast! installation: click START -> CONTROL PANEL -> ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS -> avast! Antivirus -> CHANGE/REMOVE and select REPAIR.
This solution works on Windows NT, 2000, XP and 2003 only.

... but still not working (the process is started and on automatic) . I'm on Vista SP1 and this happened just from a few days ago. Can you help me?

Thanks in advance.

Do you use a firewall? Which one?
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?  Did you have in the past?
Anything that came installed with the computer?

@pogo1945: that post simply redirects to the same FAQ I've posted here... though it's scary to even think I have infections with Avast and Windows defender always up to date, on a clean Vista SP1 install only a few weeks old with nothing tricky installed.

@Tech: I do not use a firewall (apart from Vista's). I do not have any other antivirus nor I had (it's a clean Vista SP1 install only a few weeks old). Some stuff came installed with the PC, but Avast has worked before up until a few days ago.

Any clues?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

Just did that, followed by a restart. In fact, now I don't get the error message, but the Avast icon still shows the red sign and when I right click on it and choose "Start On access protection" nothing happens. If I double click the traybar icon and choose "Start" on the On-Access Scanner window, nothing happens.

Any clues?

In which path are you trying to install avast? The default one?

Any clues?

After a few restarts, I still have the red circle and Vista reports Avast as turned off...

Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

It's a very short log... you seem to have edited it...
In this part, nothing wrong...
Some infections prevent avast to be installed.
Maybe you should run full computer on-line scanning:
Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) (very good detection rates)
ESET NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)
Trendmicro housecall (http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp)
F-Secure (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml)
BitDefender (http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html) (free removal of the malware)

Only the last 350 lines, weren't it?

Let me try Kaspersky anyway then. Shouldn't I try the solution you posted here as well? http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=40110.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=40110.0)

Which exactly solution?

2. Right Click on avast system tray icon. Click Program Settings and goto the Troubleshooting section. Check the box (Delay loading of avast! services after other system services) and click the OK button.
This is there exactly to prevent RPC errors.

This one.

I see. Glad I could help ;)

Unfortunately, after several restarts and enabling the troubleshooting option "Delay loading of avast! services after other system services", I still see the red sign and I have no real time protection.

Can you guys help me out?

Looks more like a corrupt installation than anything like the subject of this Topic.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that doesn't work try, a clean reinstall.
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it to your HDD.
1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.  If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
3. install the latest version, reboot.

Did that before when someone posted that solution, no luck.

It worked, avast is back in action... I wonder what might have caused this...

It doesn't take much for a computer to cause some corruption, normally after a crash though. It is however for the most part a very fruitless exercise trying to find out why.
