-= Vista is great.. But somehow, slower than XP & has very high requirements [esp. in gaming], moreover, I have program compatibility issues.. But, on the contrary, it was a lot safer & secure than XP..

I agree, Most of the bad stuff you read about Vista is pure and simple FUD by people who like to knock Microsoft. Vista did have it's problems in the beginning, but those were mostly fixed with SP-1.

Yes Vista requires more memory than XP, but XP required more memory than 98. This is the norm for a new OS ( With the exception of Win 7).

Why not upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 and take advantage of all the fixes that have been instituted?
The RC release is very stable, much faster than Vista. You also get to use it for almost a year before you
need to purchase the final version.  :)

I have trouble just get use to one and staying with it. I don't have the schooling to make changes on the computer offten. when my husband and I used different computer I had to try to keep both in working. now I have just one thanks God. any changes we both have to agree to it before I try it. he always ask me about the computer and what to do and as I said I am not good at computer. my husband and I don't fight over the computer. we have not yet any way in a long time. I don't like stress and all that. so I just try to keep things simple so my husband and I can enjoy the computer. years ago computers were more user friendly I do not think that any more. I have to try to keep things as basic and simple as I can. some changes can be fun and easy I just wished it was all like that. mike like no change he says if works leave it alone. I like a few basic changes. just not a lot an one time.
thanks Sharon sham1313 :)

Changing over from Windows XP to Vista is not a small change.
If you're already having issues with XP, I suggest that you not make the change.
Changing will be like starting to learn using a computer all over again.
The user interface is all together different in Windows Vista.
There are also some stringent hardware requirements and possible issues to consider.

my post above I forgot to say I am using vista and I am just now learing it better. it takes me awhile I am not a good reader but I always try. I thought most of the trouble I was having was windows vista I new some for sure was my fault. I still say windows vista should be more user friendly.

I am using Vista on my Dell laptop and have no complaints. I did notice some suggesting to change to Windows 7.  Is that a feasable thing to do. Is updating Vista on my Dell machine with Vista installed originally a good idea?  I don't mind paying the fee when Windows 7 is released.
I will keep my XP machines where they are as they are working with just a few seldom crashes which I can recover from easily.

Hey roro, I can't suggest upgrading Vista to Win7 as several friends of mine had problems after the upgrade. I've found that doing a fresh install of a new OS is almost always better.

But, if you do want to upgrade,  Paul Thurrott has a good article about it:

I don't have problems downloading from anywhere else.

Maybe its just my unfamiliarity with Vista.

I'm trying Vista SP2.

I wish I could sell this old XP Home system then maybe I could afford a second Vista system to do Windows 7 testing.

I have Vista Firewall Control Plus and it is quite comprehensive but it does not support my DSL modem so I am disapointed.

I still believe that a well protected system does not need a software firewall:
http://www.besttechie.net/2008/08/20/malwarebytes-developer-interview <== software firewall discussion starts about 8 minutes into the video.

Both videos are excellent.

Did you try the free offer from Online Armor listed in the update thread ?
I found it to be an excellent firewall and a free 1 year liscense isn't bad either.

YoKenny, what kind of backup application do you want to use?

Windows has the built-in "NTBackup", which is decent.

For windows Vista, it's still there, but there are a few drawbacks, such as not having the ability to backup .exe files without doing a full system backup.

There are online solutions as well, but they are limited in the "free" versions.  It's located in my signature, as well as Tech's (It's called Mozy).

Of course there are free disk imaging products as well, but that's for disk imaging, not file-level backups.  I guess you'll have to be more specific about what you want to do.  There aren't many free solutions to be had though, I'm afraid.

My brother is in the Army. 90% of the machines they use are nettops. A celeron or Atom processor, some memory and a network card. They boot from one central server and run over the network. Slow as molasses at the south pole.

Windows 7 may come with a Steep Price

So far most of my predictions about Windows 7 have been right on the money.  Microsoft has scaled back the number of versions. Computer manufactures confirm they’ll have Windows7 installed on machines in time for Christmas. Unfortunately, the one thing I may have been wrong about was the price. I expected the price of Windows to come down but I was too optimistic.  The best thing going for any “I’m a PC” campaign is price yet Microsoft seems to think if Apple can gouge customers they can too.

You could install Windows 7 Ultimate RC now for free to cure your vista problems and that would give you about 10 month to save up
the money to buy the actual product when your RC Beta version expires.

I saw some 1TB drives on sale (OEM) for close to 80-90 bucks a little while back though.  Hopefully you get their newsletters!

650GB should be pretty nice though!  Get a couple of them and put them in RAID 1, and have a nice little redundant mirror for a LOT of info...

YoKenny,
Thanks for the link to Vista SP2.  Has anyone else downloaded and installed it and had any problems?  I am having no problems with Vista SP1 at the present time, and don't want to cause any.
If it does get rid of all restore points, than what happens if installing it causes problems.  You can't go back to SP1?  I don't like the sound of that.
If anyone has Magic Jack, does it cause any problems with that application?  Mine is now working great and I depend on it a lot.

I've had SP2 ever since the beta came out. Everything working fine. But i have to say SP2 install did not gain any extra space for me. Probably because i have shadow storage, system restore, hibernation file and all the similar crap i never use turned off. I'm guessing SP2 install removes those old restore points and system backup files etc. Has anyone tried running compcln.exe(sp2 cleaner) after SP2 install and see if any extra space was gained ? I'm asking cause it's possible that sp2 runs it after it's finished. I just don't know as i didn't pay attention to my hdd space after i ran it.

I must have offered the needed incantations to the west as it is downloading from the Microsoft site now with their Download Manager.
I have Windows 7 installed and I read that it did not have Windows Mail and that the email would be backed up and now I can't find how to open them as they are individual .eml files.

Does anyone know how to retrieve the email?

Edit: Panic averted as I found Windows Mail but the Vista Calendar has gone.

Won't Windows Live Mail do the job importing the Windows Mail data?

I wanted Vista for a long time but I could not afford a system that was suitable and I read all the reasons why Vista was no good and Windows 7 fixed a lot of those concerns so after using Vista for a couple of months and liking it and that Windows 7 was better I decided to update.

Bottom line:
Windows 7 is better now that I know where things are and its like going from XP to Vista as things where moved around and called by different names.

You didn't think that I was just trying to sucker you into something did you ???  ;D ;D

I really haven't had many complaints with Win 7 even in some of the early betas it was better than Vista.
At this point, it's probably just about ready for final release. :)
