Does anyone know of a freeware photo editor like Macromedia Fireworks or Photoshop? I want something like Fireworks but I can't shell out hundreds of dollars for it.
-
I use GIMP and Paint.
-
(1) GIMP
GIMP.org (http://www.gimp.org/)
(2) Paint.NET
Paint.net (http://paint.net/)
(3) Photoscape
Photoscape.org (http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php)
(4) Picnik
Picnik.com (http://www.picnik.com/)
(5) Adobe Photoshop Express
Photoshop.com (https://www.photoshop.com/)
NOTE: Numbers (4) & (5) are web editors. They do not have installers.

Hi BRANDONN2008
This is my favourite http://www.faststone.org/ (http://www.faststone.org/)
More of a viewer / editor than a photoshop / editor but I usual only need lightweight edit.
-
I think I might check out GIMP since I want something for major editing like clipping heads and putting it on different bodies, and carefully clipping out specific things, idk.
-
I downloaded the Windows version of GIMP, it seems a lot like Fireworks but seems to hog my CPU. I checked my task manager while I tried to clip something on the picture and it spiked to like 80%. Maybe I downloaded wrong one?
-
I don't think so. Image editors use a lot of processing power. If you downloaded the wrong one, it just plain wouldn't work.
However, there could be a bug, but I'd say that it's safe to say that you might just have an aging computer or a weak video card, and it's just how it works out.
Digital editing needs a powerful computer.
You could try adding memory to your computer (find out what kind by visiting crucial.com or better yet, newegg.com) or upgrading your computer.
The cheapest option usually is to add memory. A faster processor can't hurt either though.

I use GIMP and its didnt take so mush memory.

He didn't say memory.
But I don't agree anyway, if you have a few 8 MP images open at the same time, and you start working with several layers for each, it's going to each up CPU and Memory.
Imaging programs aren't really tailored to low-end budget systems, especially for doing any sort of professional image work.
If you're making a small avatar or something like editing the red-eye out of a photo, it shouldn't be causing much of a problem. However, if you're working with large RAW Photos, or jpegs right off of your point and shoot or SLR camera, try compressing the 5, 6, 7, 8, etc. MB image into something a little smaller before editing it.
Or, get a faster computer.
Mac's do this sort of thing very well also, that's what they're made for.

I suggest Sumo Paint which is an online image editor.

Paint.NET. Some will hate it just because it's using .NET framework, but once you start using it, you'll not going to use anything else.

I think RejZoR was talking about this one:
(2) Paint.NET
Paint.net (http://paint.net/)

Windows only,
http://www.getpaint.net/download.html
-
??? now... nmb links to the same site as my link... seems there's 2 different links...
-
The link in this quote says windows only. and also .net is for windows only
Windows only,
http://www.getpaint.net/download.html
-
nothing...
edit: not the same software...
edit: but the paint.net also ends in .net
-
.NET framework?
-
I've tried GIMP and paint.net and I like GIMPs layering better. It seems easier and more like Fireworks to me.

I heard there was a portable version of photoshop and I searched, researched, and found one (http://portableappz.blogspot.com/search?q=photoshop).

Like? Not actually. Just found that site a few minutes ago and currently trying it right now. In contrast, the portable is significantly, lighter, faster, and of course, portable. But on the otherhand, lacks some things that I want, portable version is pretty limited, almost like the backbone of the program itself only.

That's what I found funny... I tried one of the portable apps u suggested in some other topic... n found it a bit... uncomfortable to use... :)
N since I don't have to continually switch computers, I can do without them...
PS just a question... can portable apps be used on both windows n some other OS?

Portable? Before? Could it be Firefox Portable?

From what I heard, all that runs in windows can run in Linux but I doubt somehow since most portable apps are .exes.
UPDATE: By the way, you may use exes on Linux using WINE (http://www.winehq.org/). Note that WINE will not be able to run exes as perfect as Windows does.
-
Yeah... it was FF portable...
Noticed that...none of the programs I've tried to install up to now using wine have not worked as they should...

Luck. Its all you'll need. ;)
Its the reason I'm not very dependent on Linux yet. Probably, I'll get back on Linux once its as the same level as Mac.
-
:D
but though I use linux more, I have also left the Windows on my pc untouched when I installed it...

Well, I don't really like Windows a lot too, I'm more of a Mac fanboy.
-
Yeah... but Windows is more common... Its just to b able to do wat others do that I leave windows on my pc... n because Office n some other programs don't work on linux... else, Windows would not have remained on my pc for long... ^^
But, I've never tested Mac... so, i don't really know how it works...

I guess its time to bid good night, erm, good morning I mean. I got to sleep for tomorrow's class. Thanks for the nice chat.

@.: L' arc :.
I would be careful with that site, not only are they breaching certain copyrights of Portableapps.com, but the photoshop portable (and others) they have is actually illegal:
From John T Haller (creator of Portableapps.com)
Their copy of Firefox packaged portably is just as illegal as their pirated version of Photoshop. You can't repackage Firefox without specific permission/license from Mozilla (which we have). Other sites doing it without such a license are doing it illegally.

This isn't really about photoshop but it is relevant to what I mean...
GIMP is good enough for me...
