Title: E-mail client does not work with avast5-free
Post by: horbar on January 24, 2010, 10:29:24 PM
Hello,
the installation of "Avast-Free Vers.5" took place rapidly and without difficulties.
configuration also went up correctly in every detail.
But the only program my e-mail client (GcMail) does not work .... no reception on pop3
and not send on smtp .!?.... with this mail program I have been working for years and am very happy with it .... until now ran with different firewalls
and AV programs perfectly, just as with Avast 4.8 Home .... but not with Avast 5-free.
what might this be?.....  or avast5-free only with certain e-mail programs combatible?.......below to illustrate some image-attachments.
Thank you in advance for any help
Kind regards,
horbar

Hello,
what is your mail account setup ? Do you use some mail utility (proxy) ?

My mail program is "GcMail ".... see Google:

In addition, the spam filter program "SpamPal" as Proxy: Port runs: 1110

Thanks in advance for your help,
Best regards,
horbar

Please look for errors in the log file
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Mail.log

The avast service (AvastSvc.exe) is probably blocked by your personal firewall. The service must be allowed to connect to your mail servers.

it is the content of the rule for avast!service set in OP4(Firewall) / rules for software(Programs)

You're still using Outpost Firewall version 4, that is positively ancient. I appreciate you may not want to pay for the latest version of Outpost Firewall Pro, but there is a free version which is much more up to date and more secure.

- Outpost Firewall 2009 free, a cut down version of the Outpost Firewall Pro version, which should still provide good protection, http://free.agnitum.com/ (http://free.agnitum.com/). Download, http://www.filehippo.com/download_outpost_firewall/ (http://www.filehippo.com/download_outpost_firewall/)

Yes, these rules should be enough to permit the mail traffic though the mail scanner.

Sirs,
Thank you for your willingness to help in the meantime ...... I could by eliminating the spam filter SpamPal, who worked as a proxy, my e-mail program GcMail  re-enable  ...... but unfortunately I can not find in avast5-free the built-in-spam-filter and therefore no spam protection exists...... can you suggest to me something about this?
In addition, the automatic UPDATE does not seem to work, nor
the tonal alerts ... see: Attachment
Thank you again for your efforts,
horbar

Can you can not try adding the proxy port of the SpamPal to the Mail Shield redirects, Settings, Troubleshooting, Redirect settings, adding it to the Pop port(s): e.g. 110,999 (where 999 is the port it uses). You would also need to uncheck Ignore local communication, see image.

.... just as I had avast configured ... (see image!)
but my mail client does not work ..... but with avast 4.8 works perfect!
also unfortunately avast-5 remains obsolut dumb .... especially not confirmation
about the updates (see image) and the update seems to work only manual .......
no automatic !...... these errors occur only with me ?,,,,,, or works avast-5 still incorrect ?.....in this case I would prefer to wait and even continue with avast-4
...... thank you for a quick decision.
best regards

Are you willing to try another email client?

http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/all.html (http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/all.html)

Download your localized version of Thunderbird and set you account up there. It may not suffer from the same issues. Worth a shot to at least diagnose where the problem lies.

after deactivation "SpamPal"  my e-mail client works with avast-5 .......
but:
1.) what is wrong with the sound (see the image)....no sound anyway?
2.) and why the update doesn't work automatically....and  manually  only?
are the errors in avast-5 (bugs)?......in this case I would prefer to return for the next time to avast-4 !
because of that, I would be very grateful for a prompt and reliable response
by avast-experts!
very grateful,
horbar
