Title: Windows 7 / HostsMan Incompatible + I Need Original Hosts File
Post by: BRANDONN2008 on January 25, 2010, 06:50:53 PM
For some reason, HostsMan messed up my friend's parent's new computer. It messed up my new computer too. It refused to disable DNS client and it would not let web pages load. I had to restore their computer to an earlier state, and mine I'm trying to but restore thing won't load. I think I can change the HOSTS file to the original and it might fix it but I need a copy of the original HOSTS file. Can someone attach it please?

hostman must have made a backup, you can restore it from the program.

I already uninstalled HostsMan hoping it would solve the problem  :(

Is it because I overwrote the original HOSTS file with all the Microsoft junk and example, or because of the DNS client, or what?

so just edit the hosts file (as admin) and remove anything added, ie, every line that doesn't have an # in the beginning.

Oh yes, when I had HostsMan change it, I selected overwrite, not merge, so it erased all the stuff with the #.

OK so edit it, delete everything inside, all the stuff with # is just information (tips), nothing active.

This is from Windows 7, 32 bit. I had to do it this way as the Forum wouldn't let me attach it.

That's ok. I got my system restore to work and I went back to before I installed HostsMan. I also am using Windows Firewall since my PC Tools Firewall was having problems starting when my computer did.

Does anyone know why HostsMan is messing up with Windows 7?

How is it messing up?

Its working fine on my Windows 7 system but it has to Run as administrator.

a bare HOSTS file is one line:
127.0.0.1 localhost

How do I reset the hosts file back to the default?

I'm not sure. As soon as I installed it and restarted later, the internet will not load. I had a connection but any page would just be endlessly loading. I would also get pop-ups asking me to disable the DNS client which I hit yes but it still says it's enabled. Upon uninstalling, the internet would still not work. On my friend's parent's computer, when I uninstalled it, there was an error and their desktop failed to load later on. Also, my PC Tools Firewall was messing up after I uninstalled HostsMan, because after the computer had started up, it would ask for me to let PC Tools Firewall PLUS start, and it would load after a bit. Not sure what was wrong but I restored an earlier point and have no HostsMan or PC Tools Firewall, just Windows Firewall.

Which version are you using? Are you using the newest beta? I was using the newest stable release which may not have had Windows 7 support yet.

I use HostsMan 3.2.71 Beta7
Quote
What's new since 3.2.70 Beta6?
- added: Windows 7 support;
- added: two update sources ("hpHosts (Partial)" and "hpHosts (Ad and tracking servers only)");
- changed: comments, possible hijacks and disabled entries are drawn differently in HostsMan Editor;
- fixed: cannot import some hosts file;
- fixed: DPI scaling of some visual elements;
- fixed: minor bugs.

Did you have to manually disable your DNS client or does this beta actually do it? That seemed to be a big problem with the non-beta. It would ask me to disable it but it wouldn't do it.

The beta disabled the DNS Client service.

The beta is for Windows 7 systems.

God bless you YoKenny! The beta works, it disables the DNS Client, my internet loads, and no "no bootable partition in table!" Third time's the charm!

The HOST file is usually located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

As stated above the original HOST file is found as follows.....

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1       localhost

You can manually modify this file without having to log off nor reboot your machine as the
change will generally take a minute or so after saving changes to it...

# Notes: the browser does not read this "#" symbol         #
# You can create your own notes, after the # symbol        #
# This *must* be the first line: 127.0.0.1     localhost   #

# *********************************************************#
#                                                          #
# Entries with comments are all searchable via Google.     #

Bare in mind you can only use Domain Names not IP address's...

Many company's tend to get around the HOST File by sending their packets to your machine
with the following type of Domain Name....

24.143.192.24.akamai.net

For some reason unless this has changed with Vista\7 OS the HOST file sees this as an IP address and either ignores it or renders the HOST File useless...

If you are using a lengthy HOST File the Windows OS has issues with this as well and is widely
suggested that you set DNS Caching to MANUAL or preferably DISABLED[/b...

I have my DNS Caching Service DISABLED and have noticed no real difference in the machines
performance when resolving Domain Names...

Go to my computer, back click, and click on Manage...
Click on Services and Applications
Click on Services

A box will appear where you will see all the services your machine is running or not running.
Scroll down to DNS Client and double click on that entry in which another box will appear.

On the Start Up type tab select Manual or Disable then close.

You may have to actually reboot for this to take effect ....
This was done from XP Home so the procedure may differ slightly with Vista or 7 OS...

Please consult your specific OS guide before changing any settings on your system...
Please do not shut off services with out first researching them as there are some services
that must run or you will have to have a Windows disc to REBOOT your OS...

Research the services that are running and you will be most surprised to find that many services are simply not needed and can be DISABLED...
