Umm..wow.

If I understood you correctly, you're saying that avast
basically carved up your OS and dropped it all in the chest???

Ok, taking that at face value, because I have NEVER seen that before,
lets go into your virus chest, (maintenance tab, select virus chest), and lets look at
one of those files..rite clik on the firefox file, select properties, and read what it says about it.
Post that answer.
In a nutshell, without knowing your OS, version, ect..I would guess you got a bad install.
I would suggest restoring all the files from the chest, uninstalling avast, grabbing a fresh copy from avast.com and re-installing. I will post some uninstall instructions created by another user, SafeSurf.
Beyond this, I do not know what to say:

Please follow these instructions:

Save a copy of newest version of Avast.

Save the http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) on your hard drive.

Disconnect from the Internet at this time.

Uninstall Avast through "Add/Remove Programs".

Boot into Safe Mode and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.

Reboot twice.

Clean your computer up.

Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.

Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.

Register your free copy or add the license key.

Reset your settings, if needed.

Run a scan (try a Full System Scan initially to check for malware).

Please let us know if you have any further questions or problems after completing the above or questions prior to completing the above mentioned steps.  Thank you.

Vitro or Virut - Reformat the system as this is a vicious file infector, Avast will dlete the files till the cows come home

Quote
Well, I'm afraid I have bad news for you.

You have been infected with a polymorphic file infector named Virut. This infection will spread to every executable file in your computer, and unfortunately the only cure for it is to Reformat and Reinstall.

Right now, the best thing you can do is to backup, preferably to CD, all your important data, documents, pictures, movies, and songs.

DO NOT backup any applications or installers and DO NOT backup any files with the following extensions:
  • .exe
  • .scr
  • .htm
  • .html
  • .xml
  • .zip
  • .rar
  • .doc
  • .jpg
  • .pdf
For more information on Virut, and why you need to reformat, have a read of miekiemoes blog here (http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2009/02/virut-and-other-file-infectors-throwing.html).

To find out how to carry out an XP  Reformat and Reinstall, please see this page (http://web.mit.edu/ist/products/winxp/advanced/reinstall-format.html). If you are using Vista, then check this page (http://ist.mit.edu/services/software/windows/vista/clean-install) instead.

Once you have reformatted and reinstalled Windows, have a look at this page (http://rathat.geekstogo.com/StayingClean.html) for some useful tips on staying clean, along with links to some freeware to help.

To find out more information about how you may have got infected in the first place, you can read this article (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?autocom=custom&page=How_did_I).

I am sorry I cannot give any better news.

If I'm reading this string correctly, you have a relatively new computer that came with Windows 7 pre-installed.  At the first startup, you were prompted to burn emergency recovery CD/DVD for just such a situation as you are in now.  These discs were to allow you to reformat and return your computer to the fresh, factory state.

If you did not burn the discs as prompted, you may be screwed.  The only backup plan may be to contact your computer manufacturer and order a restore DVD to return your machine to factory original.

Sorry

Yeah I was looking too and I saw that Windows 7 can be downloaded if you pay but I didn't see where it could be downloaded free with a valid license serial. Maybe MS will let you do it if you contact and ask them. I did see that it's possible to make a copy of someone else's Windows 7 disk and install it with your valid serial key.

Well I knew about that for a while now, it's the downloading a disc straight from Microsoft just by providing a key that intrigues me.  ;D

yeah there's no such thing ;D ... they never did that and never will. Downloading Windows from MS exists only for upgraders purchasing...an upgrade.

I think it's possible that they will allow that in certain cases if you contact them directly and state your case. It is not available without doing that as far as I can see.
