Hi there
Im using avast5 (Free edition) and my firewall was comodo's free edition.
there was no problem till some days ago, when i wanted to update my virus database, i saw this message: "Cannot connect to the server"
i thought maybe my firewall (comodo) blocked it.... then i changed my firewall to Ashampoo Free Firewall, but i still have this problem!
please help me....
thanks in advance

Set the avast Update settings to "No proxy" instead of "Auto detect" and test again.
As far I know, Comodo firewall is far superior of Ashampoo. It's not a firewall fault, but, maybe, a firewall glitch.

A firewall glitch with two firewalls?.....................................
-
now, i have only 1 firewall (ashampoo)
Set the avast Update settings to "No proxy" instead of "Auto detect" and test again.
i did it.... but nothing happened! the result is same (cannot connect to the server) :( :(
and yes.... as u said, comodo is much better.
but i thought maybe comodo blocked my avast.... that why i changed it. but it seems i was wrong!
thanks again guys

please help.... i really need your helps :( :( :( :( :( :(

SmartGuy, delete all entries of avast into the firewall program settings.
Boot.
Allow them again after boot.
avast.setup need access.
Yes, if anyone is surprised, I use avast firewall (AIS). 8)

Try specifying how you connect to the internet, dial-up or always connected?
-
In case of Ashampoo, it's not enough to turn it off. It still stays loaded and blocks access.
There's a known bug in Ashampoo that prevents the popups from being displayed for services that don't have the "Interact with desktop" flag set (such as the avast service).

The first time might have been related to your settings. You changed those after switching to Ashampoo, so that might have fixed the original cause while Ashampoo creates new problem, same symptom.

Your settings are ok.
As said, drop Ashampoo, it's buggy.
Either go back to comodo or use another free fw. (pctools, etc.)
