Title: *** INTRODUCING: New pre-release build of avast [NOW 5.0.673] ***
Post by: Vlk on August 24, 2010, 09:52:33 PM
The update has now been officially released as 5.0.677. Thanks to everyone who helped testing.

Hi *,

we'll soon be releasing a new build of avast 5 Free/Pro/IS. As usual, we're making the build available for public testing before it's officially released (so far the version number is 5.0.673).

Version 5.0.673 is a release candidate - meaning that if there's no significant issues with it, it will very soon be released to the general public.

How to get it
links removed

How to install it
Just run the setup executable (links above). You can either install it from scratch, or on top of an existing avast installation (installing over both 5.0.xxx or 4.8.yyy should be fine). A reboot will be required to complete the installation.

If you already have the previous beta (5.0.656 or 661 or 668) you can simply use the Program Update feature from within the avast UI.

What's new
Most notable improvements include:
- solved a problem that could lead to disappearing of the avast service
- Behavior Shield: solved a minor stability issue (aswSP.sys)
- performance and stability improvements in the avast! sandbox
- changes in the engine allowing us to generically detect/block some new types of exploits
- speed improvements in the updater
- IS: fixed a vulnerability in aswFw.sys (Secunia Advisory SA40868)
- IS: upgraded to the new version of antispam engine
- minor changes and fixes in the GUI
- fixes in the screen reader support
- added Danish and Hebrew language packs

And subsequently in 5.0.661:
- solved the vulnerability related to license files (Secunia Advisory SA41109)
- solved a UI crash condition during File system shield detections
- solved a problem with scanning of files with very long path names
- fixed the updater in East-Asian versions of avast running with Windows set to a different locale
- added Urdu language pack

And in 5.0.668:
- solved the pesky memory leak introduced in v5.0.661
- a few cosmetic fixes in the UI
- improvements in the avast sandbox
- improvements in the Outlook antispam plugin (it would be helpful if users of the avast Internet Security could test this one).

And in 5.0.673:
- more improvements in the avast sandbox
- few fixes in the new language modules
- Firewall: improvement in the path name matching (now handling correctly symbolic links etc)
- added trimming of setup.log
- a stability improvement in the avast service

Thanks much
Vlk

So this means that the sandbox bugs fixed in internal builds confirmed by Petr are fixed in this build ??? Great :D

Vlk,

Greetz, Red.

It's nothing major, really. It's basically an extension of the interface between the program and the engine (inside the definitions) that allows us to do more stuff in the realtime shield detections...

@ Vlk
Are there any plans to have the option we used to have with avast 4.8 on pre-release/beta versions of just downloading the small beta conversion file, disable self-defence module run the setup.exe file and it only downloads and updates the necessary files ?

I would love to participate in the pre-release version but at 55.01MB it is a bit much on dial-up (220 minutes), especially if there is any likelihood/possibility of having to repeat the exercise when the regular release comes out.

I found a minor problem after upgrading. I currently have the avast firewall set to ask me when a new program tries to connect to the internet. After I restarted my computer and logged in after the upgrade, I noticed the avast setup process seemed to have froze, so I rebooted, and when I logged in, avast asked me whether or not to allow the avast setup to access the internet. It appears that if the GUI component is not loaded, dialogs from the firewall are lost, which resulted in the avast setup process freezing.

Hi

New paying customer as of today upgraded to AIS.

I installed it on my small home network (3 computers 1 XP SP3 and 2 Wind 7 HP) and it appears to be working fine except for the sound problem in sandbox on my XP machine.

I have 5.0.594 on all three computers

Downloaded 5.0.656

Tried to install it over 5.0.594 only the XP computer

Got the following error message.

The setup does not contain all the needed components.  Uninstall the current version and then reinstall (Presumably the new version)

I did not uninstall 5.0.594 and then try to reinstall 5.0.656

Anyone have any other suggestions.

Thanks

Next thing I knew 5.0594 would not apply the virus definitions update.  Gave me a big red error message

So I thought.  This is no good if it is not updating the virus definitions

So I decided to try and reinstall 5.0594 and low and behold the program asked me if I wanted to uninstall it.

I said what the heck and did

Then I installed 5.0656.   It installed fine except

I had to do the entire setup of custom scans etc all over again.

Then I checked the Real-Time Shield section and guess what.  No Process Virtualization option

So I thought to myself maybe I should try and install 5.0656 on my Windows 7 desktop computer and see what happens

Installed in nothing flat no problem

However the "Process Virtualization" Real-Time Shield option showed up.

I did the same on my Windows 7 Netbook and viola PV also showed up there.

So I figured getting 2 out of 3 ain't too bad considering the one I didn't get was my XP computer.

Maybe, just maybe that the no PV on the XP upgrade to 5.0656 was the reason that I got the initial error message of missing components when I tried to install 5.0656 right over 5.0594 on my XP computer.

Did Avast lock out the Process Virtualization feature on XP computers intentionally until some problems like the lack of sound in the Sandbox can be fixed?

just wondering why a pre-release is needed, any other software company would have just sent the (minor) update, after some internal testing. But okay, one cannot blame Avast for being extra-careful ;)

is it still in beta?

5.0.594 - Stable public release
5.0.656 - Pre-release (More of alpha/beta)

Hope this helps.

Not sure if community option is a factor since that is more to do with submission (AFAIK) but I imagine that it also needs an internet connection. IIRC logos, you block connections from the UI?

Maybe someone else using the free version can confirm or a dev could tell more...although from the looks of it there is a more important task at hand for them at the moment.

Not only that. If you have English + other language, it is not displayed in English also.

Vlk, is this version a beta of avast 5.1?
Where is the boot time scanning for x64 systems?
Is there any cloud technology implemented?

Maybe this option is also limited to English environment.

P.S.

I'll certainly welcome the speed improvements in the Updater. :)
Right now my morning Update takes between 15 and 20 minutes.

The 2nd Update of the day ... I think I've only seen that one finish like twice.  The 2nd Update of the day seems to be less conspicuous.  I guess it doesn't seem to hog the Hard Drive activity like the morning Updates.

David, are you saying just the PROGRAM Update is 55 Meg?  :o
Or are you referring to downloading the entire Beta version of the Pre-Release?
Either way, I'll wait until the official release.

No I'm not.
To get the pre-release version you have to download the complete installation file 55.01MB (so that certainly isn't going to happen for me), as you simply can't update to the pre-release version.

As and when it is released as a regular program update it will/should just update the changed elements as for other regular program updates, so it shouldn't be a full reinstall requirement.

My concern would be if using the pre-release version if there was any problem with the update to the regular version I may have do an install from scratch if there was any problem.

You are reading way too much into two lines in my post

<snip>
I would love to participate in the pre-release version but at 55.01MB it is a bit much on dial-up (220 minutes), especially if there is any likelihood/possibility of having to repeat the exercise when the regular release comes out.

He is on dial-up like me, but I'm not experiencing anything like Chim's issues on updates, mine are still in the seconds for virus definition updates.

If you check Chim's signature you will see his system spec is very low, especially RAM which is heavily utilised during an update, not to mention CPU (even though auto update is meant to limit CPU use) they are both important factors. Though even so I still can't see why it would take 10-20 minutes, even with a lousy dial-up speed.

Maybe it's K9 with is blocking some of the items.
Which url should I add to it to allow downloading web advertisements?
If you can't post, well, just send me a PM ;)
Changed K9 settings and nothing...

Do you have the "Show remote content in avast User Interface" option checked in the avast settings?

Oh I just found out that this is currently displayed only to users with English version of Windows.
This will probably be changed soon...

Edit: what I meant is the Regional settings in Control panel.

Tech, wasn't the news thing related to languages?

I thought that was what Vlk was talking about here.

The News service is (as I already said) currently served only to users with the language settings of Windows set to English (and maybe French - not sure about that).

This may change, but it's not related to program updates in any way - the change would be done on the side of our servers...

It seems that the application rules - bug in the firewall is fixed (!!!!):

This bug prevented applications to register correctly under their brand-"folder" if a folder / group with the name "Other" is present. They registered under "Other" until now :D :).

This bug existed since the release of Avast IS 5.0 and finally got crushed with this release :)

Well done Avast-Developement-Team :D

I can't get flash player running in Firefox virtualized if I don't check "all settings", meaning that also add-ons plugins and extentions, on top of bookmarks, cookies, history, shouldn't be sandboxed when I launch the browser, meaning that flash player can't run virtualized, at least in Firefox...will check with Chrome...

edit: okay, flash of course works in Chrome, with flash virtualized, as long as the built in flash player runs. If I switch to the external flash plugin it doesn't work anymore. Also, whether history is sandboxed or not, the thumbnails of the "new tab" page appear all broken.
Alright, no big deal as sandboxing is hardly needed with Chrome.

The computer of mine that it is not visible on is XP SP3 (x86)

It was there on 5.0.4XX but when I tried to upgrade it to 5.0.661 I got this error message "missing components not installed" or something along those lines. :)

So I uninstalled the 5.0.4XX and then installed 5.0.661.  However with the clean install of 5.0.661 process virtualization did not and does not appear.

If it should be there and it is not, should I uninstall 5.0.661 and then try reinstalling 5.0.661 clean?

mmm, XP SP3 (x86) is supported and "Virtualization Feature" option should be available in setup (are you sure you install Pro/AIS version and not Free?). Tested Pro version on XP SP3 32-bit here and no problem with that.

Please compress & send me (kurtin@avast.com) your setup.log file ("c:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log").

I uninstalled 5.0.661 and then reinstalled it.

Process Virtualization is there and working fine for Firefox 3.6 including sound on videos.

However, now I am back to Thunderbird not working in the sand box.

This problem first occurred when I originally installed AIS 5.0.549?

I was able to change some settings and got it to work

However I don't remember which settings I had to change.

If I can't figure it out over the next several days I will post the error message.

You're trying to run Thunderbird inside the sandbox?
You mean with the paths where the data files are stored excluded from the virtualization?

It would be great if avast team develop a guide called "how to use the sandbox and virtualization" for browsers and email clients. What to do, what to set, etc.
The help files describe what avast settings do but NOT the final situation of a process sandboxed (what you can do, what you can't, what will work, what will not..., the advantages of doing so, how is the user protected against malware in these conditions).
Shortly: sell to me the use of the sandbox...

useless for an email client tbh, unless you want to virtualize the downloading of potentially malicious attachment, which means sandboxing non-malicious files too. As you may know Avast sandbox isn't accessible through explorer (well there are tricks...), meaning that most people won't be able to retrieve an expected attachment. Not virtualizing attachments? okay then why sandboxing the email client at all? for iframes, malicious pics, URLS ? there's an email shield to take care of that.

As far as I'm concerned the sandbox is just for browsers, and I'm still waiting for it to work properly (see my post above about flash player).

I never managed to use it with email clients... Everything is lost... What's the purpose?
Even for browsers you need some "real" files...
If you want a perfect sandboxed and virtualized system, go off line ;D

yeah..except email clients don't download files constantly like a browser, meaning that you can afford downloading most of them, to cache etc, in a sandbox, while having downloaded files somewhere in a safe place out of the sandbox. In terms of security doesn't make sense either (for the downloads)but there's still a use for sandboxing a browser while there's basically none with an email client.

On a side note, concerning the bugs I reported above, I won't waste too much time about it, as I already reported that months ago, and honesty I can live very well without sandboxing anything ;D

fixed Huh how?

Well, before 661, 75% of the time, flash would not run at all in Firefox while sanboxed.   Now it runs 100% of the time.

Not sure what you mean by the sandboxing process being broken.  I've seen issues with it (after a few more hours of testing since my last message) but nothing indicating it's not working (broken).

The flash issue I had was fixed with the beta 661... it wasn't working properly in all previous versions I've tried.  Not sure where you got the "suddenly fixed, in the same build".

Quote

hehe, no, it worked straight out of the box right after I installed .661.  And Flash has been working every time I start FF sanboxed for the last 10 hours (meaning 30-40 times). -- in the previous versions, it would NOT load approximately 75% of the time, now it loads 100% of the time.

As for the (perhaps new) issues I've noticed in the last few hours.... sometimes, after having browsed a lot and coming up on a page with embedded flash, FF will start to freeze while trying to play the flash video.   This happened a few times now (in the last 2 hours) and I'm trying to find a way to recreate it.  I've *never* experienced this while using Free Avast or MSE + Sandboxie 3.48.

R

This option is described in help (btw, is it easy to understand? thanks). For now it's intended for web browsers only - if you execute a web browser (IE/Opera/FF/...), the files/registry are virtualized into a separate sandbox and its contents isn't deleted when this application terminates itself. When you run web browser next time, web browsers use contents which is already present in the sandbox (because it's already "built"). This option speeds up web browsers startup. There's a UI button to force sandbox cleanup, but I'm going to integrate auto-cleanup feature into UI (e.g. cleanup after XX days, notifications or something of this sort).

@Logos: bug with flash players should be already fixed now (I think there was a problem with x64 registry virtualization component). If build 661 didn't help, please write me which browser you're using + example web url.

Hi All,

After i tried to ran 661, there was a problem that i met :

1. My machine become slower than usual
2. I didn't able to connected my internet through my ethernet card on my notebook and i am not sure whether this happened caused by trojan which delete my driver or by avast 5.0.661. So i totally format my operating system and re-installer my operating system again

And after i back to 5.0.594 everything goes to be normal again.

Please address an issue in the current version of 5.0.594.  I recently downloaded some optional MS Windows Updates on Windows XP (SP-3) and Avast is slower to become active on bootup, although system boot-time remains fast.  Additionally, the Windows XP firewall takes about 30 seconds longer to kick in. (I get the warning message about no Firewall turned on.)  The same with Avast to become active.  I also run a Wireless Home Network with a Netgear Router and a Linksys Network adapter.

Hmmm, well i purchased avast pro for two years, but i cannot use sandbox with either firefox or chrome because of the flash player issue. I am using the latest build 661. The web site that causes me lots of grief is www.t3.com. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and even can ask to install flash player plugin with firefox. But when it does go wrong my mouse pointer even goes strange, it sort of twitches between normal and busy very fast, and quite often i have to ctrl alt del out of firefox. So for now i can't use sandbox. I'm using windows 7 ultimate 64bit.

okay I'm having the issue again with flash in Firefox (4.0b4)virtualized. When flash is sandboxed too, no video at all and prompt to install flash, when flash isn't sandboxed, extremely choppy video, must either wait until the video is finish to ve able to close firefox or terminate it through task manager.

Same with using Opera, flash does not work and prompts to install flash. Also Java does not work, not sure if that is a bug or by design though.

I'm done with the sandbox for now...I suspect it from generating data corruption, so I'll wait for the next build before I use it again.

The concept is great especially when you create virtualized computers that operate entirely within their own virtualized environment.

However, it has been my experience that trying to virtualize a software program is lot more difficult than virtualizing a computer.

I have yet to find a program that can virtualize individual programs in an intuitive way from the users perspective that actually works like it should.

Good luck on making it happen.

For now I will not use the Virtualization Process in AIS

you got a really good point there: it seems indeed a hell of lot easier to achieve a complete OS virtualization than to sandbox one program. At least it is established that VMs have been working fine for a few years now.

the firewall is automatically re-creating or modifying rules for already existing rules. Just happened with Internet Explorer. And IE wasn't running at all when I got the firewall pop up. Also, I'm not sure but I think that previously, when you clicked on a firewall pop up, it opened the UI and went directly to the rule itself, now it just opens the firewall rules interface without going to the corresponding rule.

The whitelist and the non-spam buttons aren't doing anything...
Next time I open MS Outlook, the same emails are classified as spam.

what Outlook version are you using? Could you tell me more details on this one? I would like ot know whether your Outlook spam filter is active (it shouldn't be). Was the mail initialy marked as spam by avast? What happened after you clicked not-spam/whitelist? Was the mail moved to inbox? Was the subject renamed (the [SPAM] prefix should be gone). What happened after restart?

Hi Jenny,

This is a beta/test version and not the one worth replacing 4.xxxx. Please download stable version of 5.xxxx from http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/ and do a fresh install (uninstall current one and install downloaded one)

Build 668 seems to be good for me now, with sandbox enabled for both firefox and chrome www.t3.com loads up fine all the time now with flash player. Tested it quite a lot, but will see how the evening goes.

The only problem i got now is that if i enable "store files in special storage in the sandbox" option then i have problems loading up www.redmondpie.com. It loads up fine with sandbox enabled and special storage disabled all the time, but as soon as i enable special storage it won't load up correctly, even once saying that i needed to install the flash player plugin ?

Other than that small issue it seems good, keep up the good work :)

Hello!

In enother Section I told about problems of Avast 5 with contextmenu with screenreaders. I am very happy, that now also in the german versionn we have spoken messages, when a action has satred, for example update vo virusdata or found virus etc.
But there are still problems in using the Contextmenus.
I described this here:
no contextmenu in viruscontainer when a screenreader is installed (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=62411.0)
I would be very happy, if that could be fixed, thank you very much and

It says 'Vewijderen' but this is incorrect and should be 'Verwijderen'.

OK I'm testing the 5.0.668.
To compare it with 5.0.594 I set the level of heuristics in real time on high, the first thing that I could not do because the whole system slows down.
Now everything seems faster and I suffer no more blocks explorer. I also set the real-time scanning of all files in the file system. Even this first gave me several problems of slowness.
I also noticed a great increase in the speed of the operating system rebuild desktop icons. First, with 5.0.594, when the operating system regenerated the icons, the whole system slows down and sometimes freezes explorer.
I could only restart the system to solve the problem.
Thanks, AVAST team!

yeah that's weird, I also got the feeling that my system runs faster with 668, when compared to 594, i.e. copying operations and icon refreshing after changes are faster.

Hey... Disabling a shield is NOT asking the user to confirm anymore.
Before, if I remember correctly, that was an UAC-like question (like on self-defense module).
Is this a bug or it's by design? If by design, why so?

I know what I am going to write may be obvious but to me it wasn't

Using .668 with Firefox 3.6.8 on XP SP3

Running about 20 Firefox addons

What I noticed is that changes to these addons made when I run Firefox not virtualized are not made to the addons in Firefox when I later run it virtualized.  This includes adding, deleting and modifying entries to Reminderfox addon in Firefox.

So it seems that if you switch back and forth between running Firefox virtualized and non-virtualized that what you are doing is running two separate versions of Firefox at least with respect to the addons.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Is this how Process Virtualization was designed to work?

Now I can understand it if that is the design because that type of design keeps any malware, viruses localized in the sandbox.

Thanks

I can see the reason for it.  Will it be changed?

Yesterday I made a lot of changes in virtualization mode which have an influence over web browsers behavior running in the sandbox. There're a few UI checkboxes in Process Virtualization settings where you can specify which web browsers parts will be virtualized and which will not. Now the most web browsers are supported.

So, in the next build (probably today/tomorrow), if you enable the first checkbox All settings (incl. extensions, addons, etc.), changes in addons will be done permanently (= these changes will not be virtualized).

Just a note:

I have used Firefox for a number of years and follow their development efforts and security issues pretty closely.  I know that they have had some security issues with infected addons but to my knowledge very limited.  IN addition I believe that the developers have stepped up their due diligence regarding the checking of addons before they are put up on the Mozilla addons website.

Installed 668 over 591 with almost no
problems.  However, now I have the old
problem on my newsgroups (giganews).
I remember there was a solution to this
which worked for me over quite a few
versions.  All the encryptions are set to "none".
I can get e-mail, but can't connect to the newsgroups.
Now I seem to have both a "giganews.com (nntp 119)
and a "216.196.97.131" (which turns out to also
be giganews (nntp 563).  Can anyone help me or

sandbox related request:

guys, could you do it so that it would be possible, in the advanced settings, to include/exclude each thing individually, like for now, if you want to exclude add-ons and plugins from virtualization, you have to exclude everything else, i.e. history, cookies and bookmarks. What if I want to exclude plugins and leave cookies in the sandbox(just an example) ? thanks.

Java works in Internet Explorer but does not in Opera. Checking/Unchecking All settings (incl. extensions, add-ons, etc.) does not help. Other than that everything is working great.

I have a question

setup - Networked
-------------------
1 XP SP3 32bit Firefox 3.6.8
1 W7 HP 32 bit Firefox 4.0b4
1 W7 HP 64 bit Firefox 4.0b4

Reminderfox addon 1.9.8.3

In the standard setup Firefox stores the addon information in a profile file on the C drive under the Documents and Settings folder  C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxx.default\addon file

Problem
-----------
I Wanted to sync my Reminderfox "Reminders" and "To Dos" as well as the Reminderfox setup information across my network using one of the three computers to store the addon file to be synced to. I did not want to use an internet website to store the file.

Solution
----------
1. Set up a "network folder" directly on the C drive of my XP SP3 computer in the following path C:\Reminderfox\xxx\addon file.
2. Copied the addon file that was loaded with my current Reminderfox data to that folder.
3. Changed the "ReminderFox File Location" path on all three computers to" the location of that addonfile in C:\ReminderFox\xxxx\addon file location

Result
------------
It works just great.

Question
-------------
Running .673 will the ReminderFox addon file in the C:\ReminderFox\xxx\addon file update on

A. My XP computer
B. My Windows 7 HP Computers

If I run Firefox

A.  Sandboxed in all three computers, will that file continue to be sycned among all three computers?
B.  Sandboxed in just my W7 computers will that file continue to be synced among all three computers?

Hope this was clear :)

Thanks

@nesivos, build 673 has some new integrated features to detect+support add-ons. On the main computer (or OS) where you use ReminderFox add-on in the dafault folder (i.e. "C:\Documents and Settings\user\...") you can turn "All settings" checkbox on in "Expert Settings -> Parameters / Web browsers" and add-on config files will be automatically detected and excluded from the virtualization. On other computers (or OSes) where you map that folder to C:\ReminderFox you must specify this folder as the exception in "Expert Settings -> Exlusions", because C:\ReminderFox folder isn't the default folder which is used for FF's add-ons. Anyway, I'll check working with mapping volumes, because they behave little different than standard local volumes...

I have installed the latest 5.0.673 build.  It is a clean install (no other versions before it).  I don't hear the sounds like "virus database has been updated" although they are.  I am using XP Pro SP3.  I can play the sounds fine in the document and settings folder, but they don't play by themselves.  I recall that they used to play when I had an earlier version of Avast 5.

If you were on 5.0.594 you would not be notified of the later better's as they are better's but you would be notified when the next stable was released.

As far 5.0.673 works OK. I think it was mentioned "memory leak" in previous version, as I remember a lot of "Disk Full" or "VLC can't read file" errors before update to higher than v.5.0.661 :) Latest version works very stable here.

Yes, everything is ticked.  Actually, some sounds work, but the one that says: "virus database has been updated" does not.

Itsnow, you could try a repair though add remove programs if you have'nt already. Depending on what you are doing on your cpu at the time it is updating can sometimes make avast update silently, ie (browsing or some other page's open).

I'll name the "Update". Button directs to a website with an offer to purchase the program "Avast Internet Security". The button should have a description of the "Upgrade". The update is associated with downloading the new engine and databases.

The new button say's upgrade not update so i would think that this is pretty self explanatory imo.
