Title: avast 6 pro & Outpost Firewall PRO not working
Post by: hydrogen on February 25, 2011, 12:28:46 AM
Clean install of both, avast 6 pro and Outpost Firewall Pro 7.1 don’t work.
On reboot outpost encounter problem and stopped working, (Windows 7 x64) I see a few people has the same issue.

Which did you install first ?

Best to have installed avast first, so Outpost pro will detect it and ask if you have avast installed, the correct answer is yes. Outpost won't install the web control or resident anti-spyware modules. So if you got this question did you answer yes ?

As you can see from my signature I don't have any problem. I also have win7 starter but that is 32bit. So of the ones experiencing this they are all using win7 x64 OSes, presumably you are also using Outpost 64bit version (if one exists) ?

Yes, avast was installed first and then outpost FP x64, I normally don’t use anti spyware module in firewall, it it’s strictly firewall, web control I use for couple small purposes that avast don’t have but with the 5.0.667 & 5.1.889 that was no issue at least when comes to starting both-no conflict.
I use avast 6 pro and OFP 7.1 on my XP SP3 x32 machine and no issues there, and because I own over 20 machines but all win 7 x64 I want to see how that combination would work on my i7 Core x64 machines and that’s when I discovered this.
No big deal for now I use OSS , but maybe down the road if OFP & avast 6 pro works without any glitch I may consider.
Btw. The new v6 of avast  seem to work  nicer on XP comparing to v 5.1 889.
Thank you for quick response

So it looks like some sort of conflict in how the 64bit version of OFP and the avast Behaviour Shield (from version 5.1.xxx and carried forward to avast 6.0.

Have you tried the workaround:
New Behaviour Shield, Expert settings option  - 'monitor the system for unauthorised modifications' - and see if that works for you ?

No I haven’t, but base on someone else’s the same issue in different post (sorry cant point you to it but it is somewhere here) that work around didn’t work for them, it seem to be an issue x64 OS.
I have already reloaded my ISO of privies windows installation which was with OSS, that’s why I didn’t mind trying it because putting PC back bit by bit to desire state takes 10-13 min.
And like I mentioned I’m not on hurry, I’m sure with time there will be solution to the issue.
Thank you again

Lets put it this way if you don't try it you will never know. Not to mention that topic was most likely to relate to an earlier avast build, so best to confirm with the current build 6.0.1000.

I did as you suggested, but no go it still blocking OFP from launching, and if I disable “behavior Shield” OFP working nice.

Strange that disabling the Behaviour Shield works as some had reported (in earlier versions of avast) that only uninstalling the Behaviour Shield worked.

There were always some conflicts between this 2 and after while things would just fall in to place, and I’m sure in this case eventually that will work out to, but how many people will turn away from 1 or the  other before that happens :-X
Thank you very much for trying to help

All you need to disable in the Behavior Shield is the system modification monitoring, the third function in the expert settings. Uncheck that and OFP will start up fine, and that function appears to be covered by OFP also, so the risk for this work-around appears low.

XP x64 doesn't appear to suffer from this, it only seems to be Win7 64.

Thanks.  That is really useful information.  I wondered why Outpost seemed to die after Avast 5 was updated to Avast 6 on a Win7 64bit system.  We are presently using the hair shirt Windows firewall until I can rectify the situation.  I appreciate the help that I have been given to fix things.

You're probably better off with OFP and the avast! work-around, IMHO. I don't think you lose any functionality overall, and OFP is definitely better than the standard Windows FW.

Avast FREE caused issues too with Outpost Firewall.  Only appeared with the install of SP1.

hijack, go to your forum profile and checkmark "Hide email address from public?".  Spammer bots harvest them.

See http://isc.sans.edu/diary.html?storyid=10453 (http://isc.sans.edu/diary.html?storyid=10453) about Win7 SP1 issues.

One excerpt from there that may cause issues between firewall and other programs.

I take it that you are also using the 64bit version of Outpost Firewall Pro (OFP) as this doesn't appear to be a problem with avast and OFP 32bit version ?

Several firewalls are acting flakey with Win 7 SP1 and Avast 6. I tried a few myself.

Some of these pre-date win7 SP1 only released on Tuesday/Wednesday unless they were using win7 SP1 RC version. Coincidentally avast 6.0.1000 was released on Wednesday 23/2/2011 ;D

lol. I know, I had issues with avast 5.1.889 with SP1 namely the web shield and I had seperate issues with PC Tools Firewall 7 with SP1. Luckily the Avast devs pushed out 6 the day after SP1 was released and it fixed the issue I was having with Avast. But the firewalls are a different story as you read from my post. Everybody said SP1 was just a collection of updates/hotfixes, but I think otherwise with the issus i've been reading. My machine was completely up to date with patches and my download for SP1 was still 86Mb.

Now if DavidR avast! Technical would update his signature to include his Windows 7 Notebook it would be good. ;)

Please go to PROFILE then Modify Profile then Forum Profile Information  then update your Signature: with information like my signature as this helps the helpers offer pertinent advice.

For Gopher John
Quote
- Firewalls: Third party firewalls may find that some of the low level hooks they use have changed.
I solved the problem.
In New Behaviour Shield, in Expert settings option  - Unmark : monitor the system for unauthorised modifications
and as if by magic, Outpost starts and internet connection works again.

For DavidR :

Not a chance, so no need to even bother going there.

I don't use it that frequently and one of the major reasons, I really don't like the win7 experience. There are times when I have to wonder who owns this system me or win7 a right pain in the ass.

Well if calling something a pain in the ass is becoming a dinosaur, then I guess I have been a dinosaur from my early teens. As they say if banging your head against a brick wall hurts, then stop it and that is what I feel like at times with win7.

Well at least bob3160 moved up to Windows 7 ;)
He convinced me that Windows 7 was better than XP ;)
Maybe you should attend one of Bob's seminars or get him to come to cold wet England ;D
By the way I grew up in north England and left for much better opportunities here.

And what has that got to do with win7 being a pain in the ass.

What does the fact that Bob uses win7 or not have to do anything - Bob's security seminar is hardly any relevance, good security practice isn't only about what OS you use.

Even less relevant with using win7 or not, is where you grew up and why you left,
but then again this is nothing new for you to go dashing off at a tangent once again.
