Title: Avast Tray Icon disappears on Win7
Post by: dvirkk on September 14, 2011, 01:01:06 AM
Hey All,
Updated to Avast 6 on win7. Avast Icon shows up after install but on next boot does not show.
Tried to re-install: no change. I have Win defender but I don't think it made any changed. I have run Spybot but it's resident agent is not running on my machine so I figure it's not it.
Clicking on the Avast shortcut brings the icon back to tray, as it is running in the backround - but it's annoying.
Any ideas? Thanks  :P

Clean re-install.

How2
1: Download a new setup file for whatever Avast! version you use, and this>>http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility)
2: Uninstall Avast! normally via control panel.
3: Run the uninstall utility in safe mode.
4: Run the setup file you downloaded, then re-register/re-insert license.

This Might help.. it might be hidden in the hidden icon area...  You could try to open the Avast UI>Settings>Uncheck Show icon in tray, then Recheck it.

and if you click the small arrow > show hidden icons ..... it is not there ?  (see screen shot )

It's not hidden - I've set it to "show icon and notification" on the tray settings. And clicking on the little arrow does not show it.

I've re installed twice - with a new fie after uninstalling. No change, that's why I posted here. ???

hmmmm...try avast repair and reboot

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

any change ?

Try:

Task Bar and Start Menu properties -> Notification area -> "Hide inactive icons" checked -> customize -> select the row that says "Avast Antivirus" (whichever the icon is shown, the line must be the one for Avast) -> change the column "behaviour" for Avast to "SHOW" (as in show permanently). Save (OK) ALL the steps back, including "Task Bar and Start Menu properties".

Reboot and and report back here.

Those directions are obsolete in windows 7  ;)

Well, I wrote the specific steps from memory.

Do you mean that there is no way to "hide" tray icons, always "show" them, or leave the default behaviour to hide when inactive, at all? Or you meant that the exact step by step is different?

Its just the step by step process is different now, the reply 3 from Pondus shows how it is now, at the bottom of the popup it says customise which takes you to a screen with the option on what to do with all the icons.
From what the op has said ( It's not hidden - I've set it to "show icon and notification" on the tray settings. And clicking on the little arrow does not show it.) he's done the correct process so i believe dvirkk needs to do a clean install as Gargamel360 has explained in reply 1.

Thanks for the remainder about the "properties" of tray area in Seven. Independently from the exact Windows version and the exact steps, my point is to try to explicetly set the Avast program as permanently in "show" status, instead of leave it as Windows "decides" to show it or hide it.

The problem might be related to Windows tray icons cache, so (re)instaling would not solve the problem in such a case.

In addition to set the Avast program (whichever icon is shown in the tray properties, doesn't matter), the OP can try cleaning the Windows tray icon cache:

Code: [Select]
Regedit

Vista/seven:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

XP:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

Delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream values

log off immediately.

Thanks so far,

1. Re-installed already

2. The icon is not hidden - I've checked.

3. Deleted the two registry values as written by ady4um - it totally reset my tray settings but Avast does not show.  :-\

You say you have already tried a reinstall but was it a clean install by using the uninstall tool in safe mode then reinstalling avast ?

2. The icon is not hidden - I've checked.

This is not what I said. "Not hidden" is one thing. "Show" is another. See my explanation in a previous post.

In addition, could you try with a (temporary) default screen resolution (800x600), and color (8/16/24/32) bits (test several of them)? This will (temporary) change your desktop. Don't panic and don't start moving icons around. All will return to be as it was when you return to your usual values. Just test if you can see Avast tray icon (you may change the task bar setting so to NOT hide any icon and *then* test changing the resoluion).

Another test: open Windows Task Manager -> services -> look for Avast Antivirus (service). Is it listed as Status=Running ? This should be checked after a reboot (wait a couple of minutes after the boot), and NOT by double-click on Avast desktop icon.

Screen resolution didn't make a difference.
Here are screen shots

1 - Avast icon set to show.
2 - Avast service running
3 - Avast service checked for startup

Still no little orange icon

If you are able to reconfigure your Avast settings, you could try resetting Avast.

Avast main GUI -> settings -> troubleshooting -> Restore factory defaults -> check both checkboxes and "reset now".

Please reboot after the change and only *then* test it.

BTW, can you try setting Avast in English?

Avast -> settings -> language -> english -> install additional language -> ok -> REBOOT.

Is AvastUi.exe running after system reboot?
You may check this by pressing ctrl+shift+escape.

4- This is the process list just as the boot ended.
5 - No tray icon.

Changing to English made no difference.

I wonder if this is somehow related to a RTL Windows system.

Have you tried using Avast Clear Uninstall Utility DIRECTLY under Windows Safe Mode, SKIPPING "Add/Remove programs"?

Download first the latest stable Free edition/build from the official website ANEW, and the removal tool from http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility), then reboot in Windows Safe Mode and run the removal tool (setting/using the current Avast folder), but do NOT run the "Add/Remove programs".

Reinstall Avast anew under Windows Normal Mode, and reboot immediately.

If this doesn't solve the problem, then there is some other unusual incompatibility/conflict.

Settings -> troubleshooting -> load avast service after other system services?

Something is not right here as the avastui is only showing 120k usage so something is not being implimented correctly, as i mentioned in an earlyer post about you reinstalling avast - did you delet avast and then run the removal tool in safe mode which would enable you to do a clean install ?

Uninstalled avast, reboot in safe mode, run util for uninstall, reboot, re-install.
AvastUI*32 Still there, 116K.

I have just realized - when I click the avast shortcut, and avast does show it's tray (and  the main window) there are two processes (see image) with the name AVASTUI.

Is that right?

I think we've just about exhusted all possibilitys here, the only other thing i can think of is trying to shut down some third part addons to see if that has any effect ( ie battery meter ) even the language bar but that shouldn't affect it.

Maybe the developers could have a look at this thread as if needed they could get you to copy the system information file and email it to them in nfo format to see what on your system maybe causing this.

The first thing "we" need is not devs and nothing special. That might come later (or not). The first thing is for dvirkk to follow instructions correctly.

Uninstalled avast, reboot in safe mode, run util for uninstall, reboot, re-install.

I think I was clear enough in my instructions, and that's not what I suggested/requested.

Quote
I have just realized - when I click the avast shortcut, and avast does show it's tray (and the main window) there are two processes (see image) with the name AVASTUI.

And I specifically requested NOT to do this, so the "real" behaviours would show up (specially in services).

So, dvir, please read again my instructions to run the removal tool under Safe mode while skipping the normal uninstallation, and selecting the correct folder in the removal tool. All the conditions need to be meet (safe mode..., skip..., folder..., admin permissions and so on).

I also asked you about RTL Windows, and a specific Avast Team member also posted here.

If you want to follow the instructions, we'll gladly wait for your feedback.

ady4um, dvirkk has followed the uninstall instructions i gave and they are correct.

I believe you are wasting the op's time and effort and suggesting things that are pointless to satisfiy your own curiosity which seem's to be going off in the wrong direction.

Iv reported the thread to the mods for them to look into because if this keep dragging on like this with no resolution, dont know about dvirkk but i would have tried a fresh install of the operating system or already moved to a new av.

ady4um, dvirkk has followed the uninstall instructions i gave and they are correct.

@craigb,

No they are not. He already tried more than once the "normal" method, including the removal tool.

My instructions were different, in purpose. He MUST skip the Add/remove programs step. We (you and I) have already talked about this in past topics, and I have already seen this type of strange behaviours (but the solution is not always the same, depending on MANY other things other than Avast).

He already dismissed my instructions at least twice, and you are, once again, questioning CORRECT instructions (that HAVE successfully solved this type of display problems).

In addition, dvir probably has an RTL Windows, which only makes the troubleshooting more difficult. Yonatan also asked him something (although I "think" the answered was previously posted), and he should know better in dvir's situation.

What you think are "not-related" directions, are not such. It simply depends on experience on "strange situations", as oppose to giving the frequently known and frequently useful methods. They won't work in this case, but the first reason to fail is that dvir is trying to use "shortcuts". Those shortcuts usually work, but not when the issue is out of the normal.

If dvir wants additional help, he already knows what to do. Or he can wait for an Avast Team member to come back here.

Dvir, good luck.

Although I don't really appreciate the judgment of my character and the tone of this thread I figured just for the sake of argument and to satisfy my curiosity I'll re-do everything again according to ady4um.
There was a skipping, safe mode uninstall with the util, reboot, and reinstall (English)... reboot right away (to keep the bad bytes away) and nothing pressed afterwards. There is one process called avastiu 124k and nothnig on the tray.
BTW this is not an RTL system.
So... I guess it's time for the AVAST team to come into the ring :) Otherwise I'll take craigb's advice and just go to sleep with a new AV.

Do you have the Avast! desktop gadget installed?  I don't, but if I remember right, when I tried it when it 1st released, it trumped the tray icon.

Hi Dvir

I'm looking at this problem, it appears that AavastUI hangs there after failing to initialize properly.
If I got it right, when you start avast from the desktop shortcut, it is displayed?

Yep, that's the behaviour he sees:

Clicking on the Avast shortcut brings the icon back to tray, as it is running in the backround

I can add that when I've changed the properties of avastui.exe file to "Run always as Admin" then at computer startup the UAC popup requested permission for the file to run and then Avast would start properly with one process, the right memory size and a tray icon. Since this approval took place at every startup I was very frustrated. Removed Spyboy (although it wasn't resident) and tried again the whole remove (safe+avast util) and reinstall this time running the setup file "as admin" (this was suggested by avast support over an email) but this has not resolved the issue.

I have also found an interesting article about avast not showing for delaying the system startup:
http://www.brighthub.com/computing/smb-security/articles/89227.aspx
but after quickly looking at the alerts there I figured this was not the solution for my problem.

Some one who solved a similar issue by uninstalling avast with Appremover and deleting some registry leftovers manually - tried that - didn't make any difference.

I don't know how much trash was created on my computer after all of those installs-uninstalls but since the Avast support team basically stopped replying to my questions via email - I've just removed everything, had to go back to a restore point and installed a different free Anti-Virus program (AVG). I guess I'll keep following this post and might try Avast again later on.
Great Day and thanks for trying to help.

most of those programs including TU undelete, etc. don't really remove all the registry entries from almost any program. You can still search and find some of them in the registry. Also, system restore won't restore most program settings and system settings. For example, Avast 6.0.1000 can keep the same program settings no matter what system restore point is chosen. Though not sure if later builds fix this for Avast!, however it just shows that a clean install of your OS could be an option for resolving this (just make a good backup of all your stuff).

For also resolving the Avast Icon in the taskbar and UI problems:

You can try Microsoft Fix Ithttp://support.microsoft.com/fixit/ (http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/)

You can try booting in safemode DSREPAIR

You can try enabling the system admin account on welcome screen, and logging into that to see if Avast! works their. Use the ultimate windows tweaker, to do this. It's easier http://download.cnet.com/Ultimate-Windows-Tweaker/3000-2094_4-10915128.html (http://download.cnet.com/Ultimate-Windows-Tweaker/3000-2094_4-10915128.html)

I have the exact same issue in Win7 x64.  Avast has been installed on five different machines but one is being problematic (a Lenovo T420i).  Tried these remedies none have worked.  Avast tray icon will show up about maybe 1/3 of the time, otherwise all symptoms are exactly as described.  Has a fix been found?
