sorry...running win7 32 bit sp1...avast 6.0.1289 completely updated
many thanks.. :)

Try enabling all the sounds options in Avast (at least just for test). Do you still hear the beeps then? Any other sounds when that option is enabled?
-
Well, from avast! you usuallly get 3 pings, if something is detected.
So, if you get 4-6 this must be something else...

Hi,
If still the issue persists, try to do a clean installation from the scratch..
Download the uninstall utility from the http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe link and save it.
To remove the currently installed avast!, Open avast! GUI, click on Settings (on top right corner) -> Troubleshooting -> Uncheck "Enable avast! self-defence module" and click on OK.
Run the aswclear.exe utility to remove avast! from the machine.
OR
Try boot into Safe Mode and run the removal tool.
Once you remove the avast!, make sure that you reboot the machine.
Download the latest version of avast! product that you have purchased and install it.
Try now to scan the files and please update back regarding the beep sound.
Have a wonderful day. Good Karma! :)
-
double checked & there are exactly 6 beeps..
ady4um.. enabled all sounds & beeps still happen but no other
sounds ...
yogisolutions1... did complete removal using aswclear, reinstalled and the beeps are still happening...
many thanks.. ???

Why do you think this is related to avast..??
Any pop-ups or messages..??
-
I have to admit that I have no idea what triggers those beeps, if indeed it is Avast itself that is triggering them.
I mean, is there any other event that could be simultaneously triggering those beeps? For example, the appearance of some window? Is there any other situation that triggers those beeps?
Can you check your BIOS settings and change them (at least for testing)? The beeps and error messages in the BIOS settings are usually in the "general" configuration of your BIOS (and they can also be related to USB or PS2 devices).
I admit these questions are more "blind" shots than anything else, but you may found some other related behaviour / event.
-
i think it is avast because i have had this pc several yrs & never had beeps b4 installing avast...also beeps only occur
when running avast...have used other avs and never had beeps,
so i would conclude that beeps must be coming from avast..
no other popups, windows, etc. appear during scan...
will try the bios settings & post back..
many thanks.. ???
-
will try the bios settings & post back..
Yes, please post back any possible feedback. To me, this a first in relation to Avast.
BTW, you should run the respective removal utilities for old security tools you ever HAD (including those you already uninstalled).
A partial list is located at http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/ (http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/).

Well, if avast! beeps it displays a pop-up as well.
If you don't see any it's most likely not related to avast. ;)
-
Hi,
We don't think this is an issue related with avast!. Can you confirm that the beep sound comes only when you scan the computer using avast!.
Which is AntiVirus software that you had used in the computer before? Have you removed it completely from the computer? As ady4um mentioned above, you will get the removal tool from the website which is given in above post and remove it from the computer.
Please update back. Have a wonderful day. Good Karma! :)
-
i have removed all other avs & this only occurs when running avast..i have done more testing & the beeping seems to only happen when doing 'command line scans'...i ran the exact same scan in gui and no beeps..ran same scan via command line & beeps sounded again, predominately when doing full rootkit
scan and doing scan of 'c' drive...have not tested any other scan areas yet..
many thanks... ???
-
i have removed all other avs...
How many did you have..???
-
when i said "avs" i meant only one...avira
i have used kis in the past, but that was removed long ago..
cheers.. ;)

scan and doing scan of 'c' drive...have not tested any other scan areas yet..
Hi.
Can you update us with the status of "other scan areas".
Have a wonderful day. Good Karma! :)
-
have to wait till later...will post results of 'other scan areas' in little while..
many thanks.. :)

@emilemma,
From your report, it "seems" like Avast command line scanner is using beeps to "tell you something", just as the GUI would use some sounds in some cases.
Maybe there is some command line argument / parameter to run Avast command line scanner with no beeps, but please pay attention to what exactly Avast is trying to "tell you" with those beeps.
If the beep is only saying "I've finish the scan and all is OK", then it would be "acceptable" to set the scan to be "soundless" ("beepless"). Note however that I am NOT recommending cancelling the beep in such case either.
If, OTOH, the beeps are saying "hey, please pay attention to the results, since something seems fishy", then I wouldn't take that situation as "acceptable".
I guess the only way to find out is to start a short / middle command line scan (instead of having to wait for the complete "C:" drive), and after the beeps:
1._ Compare the new beeps with the previous ones you had; and,
2._ Check the log results of the scan, so to (maybe) relate the beeps to the specific results.
I hope I was clear enough (don't hesitate to ask again).

when i said "avs" i meant only one...avira
i have used kis in the past, but that was removed long ago..
Be sure to get rid of both...!!

-
gentlemen, i owe you an apology..it seems as tho i had not run both kis & avira removal tools b4...i reran both kis & avira
removal tools & tested more scans...THE BEEP is no longer sounding!!!!
i am puzzled tho as to why it only beeped via command line & not the gui...
also even tho there were program traces left after removal via
the win 7 control panel, what would cause avast to beep &
why??? it did not indicate that there were any viruses
or any other problems.. the scan log was clean, no errors,
etc., just the beeps!!
another unrelated question...does avast scan the registry
during a 'c' drive or full system scan or any other time??
also does avast scan for rootkits during any scans other than
when specified as one of the parms setup for a 'custom scan'??
many thanks for your time and assistance!!! :)
-
i am puzzled tho as to why it only beeped via command line & not the gui...
Can you try running the EXACT same scan from GUI and check any messages and log results? Even when you no longer get the beeps, you could still compare the log results between command line scan and GUI scan.
also even tho there were program traces left after removal via
the win 7 control panel, what would cause avast to beep &
why???
Once again, you really need to check the log results of those specific scans (and maybe report them here).
The logged result may not include every detail of the scan (so maybe the answer for those questions is not there anyway), but if there is an answer for those specific scans in "some" place, it is there.
-
i have removed all other avs...
How many did you have..???
Not just that but why do an uninstall and re-install of avast. ??? I would think a "repair" would suffice. :)
At least the OP has the issue behind them. :)
@emilemma try using a cleaner like CCleaner http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
You will find CCleaner is very user friendly. :)
avast will not scan the registry only files which can be infected. To scan the registry use CCleaner.
Rootkits; avast by default does a quick scan. You do have the option to create a "custom scan. On a custom scan avast allows the user to set certain parameters. I would suggest leaving the packer setting at the default setting. If you do a full scan for rootkits you may get some false positives. For the most part the default full system scan will be sufficient. I do a full system scan once a week and a quick scan twice a week. To do more than one full scan a week is overkill due to the fact that avast has some very strong resident shields. That is unless you play with fire, then you might get burned. :)

How did you remove them? Did you use special uninstall tools.
-
i used the tools suggested by you to remove avs...
i have been using ccleaner for years...
i checked all log results when doing the gui and command line
scans, nothing ever showed up...
again, many thanks.. :)
-
many thanks for your time and assistance!!! :)
You're welcome..!
-
also does avast scan for rootkits during any scans other than.......
yes...8 munutes after boot
-
this beeping sound is still there...only when running a FULL
rootkit scan...tried unloading avast, ran 3 progs. to clear
out any previous avs, ran aswclear to clean out avast,
did clean install of avast 6.0.1289...
setup custom scan in avast to scan only rootkits(full scan)
setup batch file using ashcmd pointing to /@custom scan
ran scan with rootkits(full scan) & beep SOUNDS again...
changed custom scan to scan only rootkits(quick scan)
ran scan again & no beep...
this only occurs when running avast, & only when using a batch file with ashcmd.exe...does not occur when running the same scan in gui...
would someone be kind enough to setup scan as i did
and see if you have same problem...
this is driving me nuts...
have to know where problem is...
appreciate any of your efforts...
many thanks.. ???
-

Sorry, no beeps here at all.
Follow instructions and post your logs: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

sorry, i cannot find 'additional options' of which you speak..
to send the scan results..
many thanks.. ???
-
When making a post, see highlighted area in attached pic.
-
sorry about the confusion here...
having some other problems... will get back to you later..
many thanks..
here are the requested logs...
again, many thanks..

has anyone had a chance to look at this yet???
many thanks..

has anyone had a chance to look at this yet???
The last time i looked, there were no logs attached.
I'll ask EB to take a look at them.
-
I noticed in the OTL log you have comodo installed, is this just the firewall ? as it looks like the suite.
Just a thought ! does ACE utilities have any running background processes that give an audible sound ( beep ) while performing tasks ?
-
I have comodo FW & defense, but NO AV
ace utils only runs when i start it...as far as i know ace does not issue beeps for any reason when running..
it is not running in bkground when avast is running..
many thanks..
-
No apparent malware in the logs... Have you tried disabling the windows sounds in control panel ? Does that stop it, if so then re-enable one at a time until you find the culprit
-
turned off all sounds as you suggested, but to no avail..
still receiving 6 beeps even with ALL sounds off...
-
I'm starting to think that some Avast's developer should comment here, whether there is some command line argument or some situation where this "beep" behaviour should be expected or if it can be otherwise changed; specially keeping in mind that this is happening with Avast running from command line only (not when ran from GUI).
-
that sounds like a good idea...i checked every sound in the control panel & none of them issue six beeps as a sound to begin with...
as i said b/4, i turned off ALL sounds & still receive
the six beeps when running the command line...
************************************************************
new info...
did some more testing and discovered this...
if i run the cmd line(ashcmd "*RTK-FULL" /_> C:\filename.txt), which sends output to filename.txt instead of cmd line screen, there is NO BEEPING!!!!
but, when i run cmd line(ashcmd /@=taskname), which is also
specified as a *RTK-FULL scan in the taskname settings and,
which has a report name specified in the taskname settings,
i get the 6 beeps...
VERY, VERY STRANGE!!!
many thanks...
-
emilemma: thanks, i'll try to fix it. Would you mind sending me your c:\filename.txt file (scan log) to kurtin@avast.com? Thanks.
-
i am sending it very shortly...
hope you find the problem...
many thanks...
